Abstract

One of the superior products of Indonesian plantation food crops is high quality coffee plants. The Horas Farmers Group, a coffee plantation community, is a group of farmers who develop superior coffee plants in the Siboruon Village area, Balige District, Toba Regency, North Sumatra. Robusta coffee and Arabica coffee in lowland and highland plantations are the most widely cultivated species and are one of the plantation commodities that are relied upon and generate foreign exchange for Indonesia. Program implementation methods include idea formulation, structural and functional design of machines, manufacturing processes, machine performance testing and tool implementation. The main idea of this program is to make a dry coffee grinding machine with the working principle of a mechanism for pressing the material from two sides using a rolling pin which is based on engineering design and calculations so as to avoid mixing the skin with the coffee beans. This tool consists of a hopper, shaft, pulley, belt and gasoline motor. The advantage of this tool is that it can save time and energy in the coffee stripping process and this tool is easy to carry anywhere (portable). This program aims to create an appropriate semi-conventional mechanical grinding tool in order to help farmer groups in the Siboruon Village coffee plantation community maintain the quality of the coffee beans produced so that their economic value remains high. It is hoped that this program will be useful for the government in helping apply technology to traditional agriculture and help increase awareness of the community's agricultural problems.

Abstract

Candles (Aleurites moluccana) have numerous benefits for human life. This is evident in Siboruon Village, Balige District, Toba Regency, North Sumatra Province. Candlenuts are a major agricultural commodity and are quite abundant during the harvest season. Post-harvest candlenut processing is still relatively conventional, often done manually by directly pounding the candlenuts, resulting in less than optimal production capacity. Therefore, researchers will conduct a design that will facilitate the cracking of candlenut shells. The authors used experimental research, constructing tools and conducting direct testing on objects in Siboruon Village, Balige District, Toba Regency, North Sumatra Province, from January to December 2024. The main frame of the candlenut shell cracking machine was designed using ST 37 angled steel with an "L" profile measuring 40 x 40 x 4 mm. The tools used included welding, a cutting grinder, a rolling ruler, a steel ruler, a pin, a square, and a scraper. The steps involved in constructing the main frame of a candlenut shell-cracking machine are: 1) Preparation of working drawings, 2) Material cutting planning, 3) Cutting process, 4) Assembly process, 5) Welding process. Based on the results of this final project, a candlenut shell-cracking machine has been produced. After construction and functional testing, the frame is capable of supporting the load applied by other components and can support the machine properly
