Abstract

Currently, our world is experiencing an ecological crisis, and this can be seen in the polution of water, air and soil. It shows the fractured relationship between human beings and other creatures, in a way that it is not reciprocal, and in which human beings relinquishes his and her responsibilities to the nature and to the other creatures. Responding to this, through Laudato Si’, Pope Francis has called on attention to the ecological emergency. The Pope emphasized on the importance of a reciprocal relationship between the na[1]ture and human to reawaken our human ecological consciousness. However, the author finds that prior to the Church’s ecological appeal, the ecological awareness has already existed within the local Manggaraian culture, namely the roko molas poco. This paper aims at exploring the ecological meanings of the roko molas poco rite and its connection to the Laudato Si. The approach adopted by the authors is the qualitative-descriptive method by reading lit[1]eratures related to the topics discussed. From the study, the authors find that there is similarity in the meaning contained in the rite of roko molas poco and that in the Laudato Si’ appeal. Both have the same goal in improving and building our human ecological awareness. Thus, human ecological awareness can be revived by raising up the values that have already existed in local culture such as roko molas poco

Abstract

This article aimed to study the Barong Wae rite, a ceremony honoring the guardian spirit of water in Manggarai, Flores, according to religious philosophy. The traditional Manggarai society believes that water is a blessing given by water’s guardian spirit to support human life. The writers assume that this rite is an indication of confessing the existence of a supreme being. Therefore, the writers elaborate on this rite through religious philosophy study. In this study, the writers want to point Barong Wae rite out towards God’s existence. To analyze this case, the writers use qualitative-descriptive methods through document study. The result of this study is that, from a religious philosophy perspective, the tradition of Barong Wae can be used as a datum to prove the existence of God ontologically, cosmologically, teleologically, morally, and ethnologically.AbstrakArtikel ini bertujuan untuk membuat kajian filsafat agama di balik ritus barong wae yakni upacara penghormatan kepada roh penjaga air di wilayah Manggarai-Flores. Masyarakat tradisional Manggarai meyakini bahwa air merupakan berkat yang diberikan oleh roh penjaga air untuk menunjang kehidupan manusia. Dalam pandangan penulis, barong wae ini merupakan satu indikasi adanya kepercayaan akan adanya wujud tertinggi. Atas dasar itu, penulis mengelaborasi tradisi Barong Wae dengan kajian filsafat agama. Melalui kajian filsafat agama penulis ingin menunjukkan bahwa dalam ritus Barong Wae terdapat pengakuan akan eksistensi Allah. Untuk menganalisis masalah ini penulis menggunakan metode kualitatif-deskriptif melalui studi dokumen. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa, dari perspektif filsafat agama, tradisi Barong Wae dapat dipakai sebagai pintu masuk untuk membuktikan eksistensi Allah baik secara ontologis, kosmologis, teleologis, moral, maupun etnologis.
