Abstract

The spread of Islam to the archipelago was first carried out using various methods and channels; trade, political power, art, and so on. However, the first generation of missionary pioneers in Java, who were popularly known as Wali Sanga, chose to utilize the medium of kinship ties that genealogically connected fellow practitioners of the mission, and between them and strategic community groups who were the objects of Islam. In reality, such a transformation model has proven effective in increasing the success of Islamic penetration, and the Wali-wali are increasingly recognized for their role in the community structure of the indigenous population. Even then, through these signs of continuity of descent, society's conversion to Islam shifted from its initial state of just individual action to a massive phenomenon when this religion was widely accepted by the majority of the population, which is now the largest concentration in the world. Abstract

This study employs an analysis of visual images in English textbooks used in Islamic-affiliated schools through the lens of Kachru’s three-circle model of English, which categorizes English-speaking countries into Inner, Outer, and Expanding circles. This study aims to explore how these images reflect and reinforce linguistic and cultural ideologies associated with each circle. A qualitative content analysis was implemented, focusing on the visual images within English textbooks, which were categorized based on the representation of cultural elements. Data analysis was implemented using a coding scheme and Critical Discourse Analysis framework, examining the power relations and ideological influences represented by the visual content of the textbook. Results show that inner circle culture was dominantly represented (67.9%) in the textbook of its visual use. Western-looking people, outfits, movies, and food represent the images used in the textbook. The finding suggests that textbooks used in English teaching at Islamic affiliated schools, or madrasas, must be carefully designed and selected to adjust students’ needs and school context, as teaching a foreign language can carry others’ ideologies and power.

Abstract

Conversion is not only observed as a theological change in someone’s belief and behavior, but  socio-cultural change that affects identity formation. This present study is conducted qualitatively involving ten Muslim converts who are associated with the white Western people. It aims at investigating their identity formulation on the process of becoming and being Muslims in the Western context in Australia, Sydney especially. Also, this research is to find the comparison between male and female converts’ identity formation. Results show that social challenge has the biggest part of the Muslim converts’ identity formation. Further, the study pictures different pattern of social challenges between male vs male and male vs female Muslim converts that leads to their identity formation. This study has highlighted that Muslim converts in the Western context have been challenged more by the socio-religious reality than faith-related practices. This study suggests that the Muslim community and the born Muslim family living in Australia are encouraged to set a program to address this tension.
