Abstract

This research examines the use of figurative language in selected songs from Ariana Grande's “Eternal Sunshine” album. The primary objective is to analyze the figurative expressions through a detailed lyrical analysis. The analysis categorizes the figurative language into four main types: simile, metaphor, personification, and hyperbole. The findings indicate that metaphors are the most prevalent, with 18 occurrences, followed by hyperboles with 9 occurrences, personifications with 4 occurrences, and similes with 3 occurrences, totaling 34 instances of figurative language. These literary devices enhance the emotional and thematic depth of the music, fostering a deeper connection between the listeners and the material. This study contributes to understanding the role of figurative language in contemporary music and highlights the artistic intricacies in Ariana Grande compositions. Employing a descriptive qualitative methodology, the research focuses on five specific tracks from the album, underscoring the significance of figurative language in songwriting.

Abstract

Stand-up comedy has evolved into a dynamic platform for the treatment of complex social and environmental issues, combining entertainment and education. However, little is known about how stand-up comedians manage the balance between entertainment, education, and ethical responsibility when addressing environmental challenges. This study aims to understand how humor functions as a tool for raising environmental cultural awareness and promoting positive behavioral changes. The study employs a case study methodology in conjunction with a qualitative approach. The analysis will be carried out through discourse analysis to uncover the underlying themes, ethical considerations, and communication techniques embedded in Pandji Pragiwaksono's humor. The findings from this study will not only enhance our understanding of humor's role in environmental communication but also provide practical insights for comedians, environmental educators, and communicators who are trying to effectively engage audiences while maintaining ethical integrity across different cultural contexts.

Abstract

In the digital era, podcasts have emerged as a powerful medium for in-depth conversations that allow speakers to address complex social, personal, and controversial issues. This study aims to analyze how Grice's Cooperative Principles are adhered to, flouted, or violated in Jansen Manangsang's episode on CURHAT BANG. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, selected transcripts will be examined to uncover patterns of conversational behavior that reveal how meaning is constructed and concealed in emotionally intense digital communication. The research highlights the complexity of pragmatic interpretation and underscores the importance of pragmatics theory in analyzing real-life, emotionally charged conversations in digital media. This research contributes to digital pragmatics by showing how language in controversial podcasts shapes public perception, manages emotion, and constructs social narratives.

Abstract

This study explores the use of Leech's politeness maxims and the cost-benefit principle in LinkedIn comments about job postings, aiming to understand how job seekers maintain politeness when pursuing job opportunities in a professional digital environment. The research objects used were comments in 5 job postings. Using a descriptive qualitative approach, the comments on the LinkedIn platform were analysis and classified based on the 6 maxims proposed by Leech: Tact Maxim, Generosity maxim, Approbation Maxim, Modesty Maxim, Agreement Maxim and Sympathy Maxim. The findings showed that out of a total of 31 data found, the Tact Maxim (32%) was the most common, followed by Approbation Maxim (16%), Generosity maxim (13%), Modesty Maxim (13%), Agreement Maxim (3,2%) and Sympathy Maxim (3,2%). Further cost-benefit analysis revealed that most of the comments showed a lack of politeness, focusing only on personal benefits without providing benefits to the interlocutor.
