Abstract

This study aims to conduct a Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) of the article "Indonesia closer to dream of World Cup," published by The Jakarta Post on June 12, 2024. Employing Teun A. van Dijk’s CDA framework, this research seeks to uncover the underlying themes, social cognitions, and contextual elements that shape the narrative presented by the media regarding Indonesia’s aspiration to host the FIFA World Cup. The Jakarta Post's coverage is of particular interest as it reflects and potentially influences national sentiments and perceptions concerning Indonesia's international standing and capabilities. The findings of this study indicate that The Jakarta Post employs a strategic use of language to construct a positive and aspirational narrative around Indonesia’s World Cup bid. The use of optimistic language, motivational rhetoric, and authoritative quotes creates a compelling vision of national progress and international recognition. This narrative not only reflects the country's ambitions but also serves to mobilize public support and foster a sense of collective identity and purpose. This s study contributes to the field of media studies and critical discourse analysis by providing insights into the interplay between media, society, and national identity. It underscores the power of media narratives in shaping public perception and mobilizing collective action towards national goals. The application of van Dijk’s CDA framework provides a robust analytical tool for examining how discourse structures reflect and shape power relations, ideologies, and social structures within a specific cultural and historical context. This research thus offers valuable perspectives on the role of media in constructing and disseminating discourses that influence societal values and ideologies, particularly in the context of major international events such as the FIFA World Cup.

Abstract

This research explores the role of ethics in cross-cultural translation, focusing on the essential principle of cultural sensitivity in translation work. In an increasingly globalized world, translation not only requires linguistic expertise but also the ability to navigate complex cultural landscapes. The research highlights the importance of understanding cultural nuances, ethical considerations, and the impact of translation on social responsibility. Through a literature review, the study examines various scholarly perspectives on translation ethics, drawing on the works of notable researchers and case studies. The methodology employed in this study is a comprehensive literature review, synthesizing insights from existing research on translation ethics, social responsibility, and cultural sensitivity. The findings emphasize that ethical translation is not merely about accurate word-for-word translation but involves a deeper awareness of cultural contexts and values. Translators must balance linguistic accuracy with the cultural meanings embedded in the source text, ensuring that the translated work resonates with the target audience while respecting cultural differences.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the pragmatic functions of deixis in six selected songs from Ariana Grande’s Eternal Sunshine album. Using Levinson’s (1983) theory of deixis, the study identifies and classifies five types of deictic expressions: person, time, place, discourse, and social deixis. The study employs a descriptive qualitative method and uses documentation as its main data collection technique. A total of 306 deixis were found: 228 person deixis, 33 time deixis, 16 place deixis, 19 discourse deixis, and 11 social deixis. The dominant use of person deixis demonstrates the strong self-expression and emotional engagement of the singer. Time and discourse deixis help shape the emotional timeline of the narrative, while place and social deixis reflect interpersonal distance and roles. The findings reveal that deixis functions not only to maintain textual cohesion but also as a pragmatic tool to construct intimacy, express identity, and evoke emotional resonance in the lyrics.

Abstract

In the digital age, information travels quickly, which has made it easier to learn new things but also made it easier for false information to spread. In Indonesia, fact-checking efforts by online news sites like Kompas, Tempo, and Liputan6 have become very important in dealing with this problem. This study examines the linguistic and discursive strategies utilized in fact-checking articles published from 2022 to 2024 to foster critical literacy among readers. Utilizing the principles of Critical Literacy and Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), the study examines five fact-checking texts addressing political, health, and social matters. The results show that all the articles follow the same story structure: they start with claims, then go into detail about the investigations, present evidence, and give final judgments. At the micro level, hedges, boosters, and evidential markers are used on purpose to change how certain and credible something is. At the meso level, discourse structures and intertextual references bolster institutional authority, whereas at the macro level, fact-checking serves as an educational instrument that promotes critical and contemplative reading habits. Overall, the study shows that fact-checking serves two purposes in Indonesia: it helps people check the accuracy of information and it helps people build their resistance to false information.
