Abstract

Outdated teaching styles often lead to monotonous English classes in high school and affect students' enthusiasm in the learning process especially if the class is not equipped with technological developments. To address this challenge, this preliminary study designed and developed an interactive e-module with Environmental Context using the Flip Builder application as learning media for Explanation Text material to support English learning through multimodal learning strategies in senior high school. This study employed Research and Development approach and implemented ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation) as initial research techniques. Moreover, the final evaluation methods occurred to ensure the feasibility of the e-module. The result of this research was an interactive e-module that contains multimodal texts which include written texts, images, animations, videos and games to capture students' interest during the learning process. The validation results indicated that the e-module was valid for all aspects. Therefore, it can be inferred that the interactive e-module using the Flip Builder application on Explanatory Text material with environmental context for high school student was feasible to be implemented in schools.

Abstract

This literature review explores the development of effective listening skills among Malaysian English as a Foreign Language (EFL) students through a sociocultural lens. Recognizing the significance of sociocultural factors in language learning, this study examines various theories, strategies, and interventions pertinent to enhancing listening proficiency in this context. By synthesizing existing research, the review elucidates key socio-cultural influences on listening skill acquisition and offers insights into tailored pedagogical approaches to optimize listening skill development among Malaysian EFL learners. Thus, internationalization has become a desirable trend among learners to further their future study or professional world where English is the medium of instruction. As a result, Malaysian students look for strategies to help them overcome their academic comprehension challenges. This paper explores and better explains EFL Malaysian students’ academic listening challenges and strategies to motivate stakeholders to support in furthering their studies overseas or in the working world. Thus, this paper reviews related literature on academic listening strategies through the traditional literature review.

Abstract

Educational policy, technological advancement, and socio-cultural dynamics in Indonesia have made English language learning increasingly complex. Therefore, appropriate strategies are required in selecting teaching methods, assessments, and technology to ensure that the learning process remains effective and adaptive to these changes. This study employs a qualitative approach with a case study design to explore the implementation of teaching methods, assessments, and technology in English language learning in Indonesia. Data were collected from six lecturers at a university in Indonesia through onsite and online interviews, observations, and document analysis. The findings reveal that the implementation of English language teaching is influenced by educational policies, cultural factors, and student characteristics. The implementation of the Outcome-Based Education (OBE) policy encourages the use of active learning approaches such as Project-Based Learning (PBL) and cooperative learning, which emphasize learning outcomes. In addition, assessment forms are aligned with the adopted teaching methods, allowing evaluations to better reflect students’ learning processes and achievements. The use of technology also plays a crucial role in providing interactive and flexible learning experiences while facilitating assessment practices. Overall, this study highlights the importance of integrating teaching methods, assessments, and technology within the context of educational policy and local culture. These findings are expected to contribute to the development of more contextual and relevant strategies for English language teaching in Indonesia.
