The instruments of the research were sentence completion and error recognition questions for English grammar test and Indonesia – English translation essay for translation test. The statistical analysis using Pearson product-moment formula was applied to analyze the correlation between grammar usage and Indonesian – English translation ability of the fourth-semester students. The result of data analysis revealed that the Pearson correlation value r-counted of 0.837 was higher than r-table of 0.320 at the level of confidence 0.05 which meant that alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and of null hypothesis (H0) was rejected. The research findings revealed that there existed a significant correlation between English grammar usage and Indonesian – English translation ability the fourth-semester English Study Program students of Universitas Riau. It is implied that the proficient English grammar students displayed commensurate in Indonesian – English translation ability while those who lack of grammar usage ability found difficulty in translation tasks. Abstract

Outdated teaching styles often lead to monotonous English classes in high school and affect students' enthusiasm in the learning process especially if the class is not equipped with technological developments. To address this challenge, this preliminary study designed and developed an interactive e-module with Environmental Context using the Flip Builder application as learning media for Explanation Text material to support English learning through multimodal learning strategies in senior high school. This study employed Research and Development approach and implemented ADDIE model (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation) as initial research techniques. Moreover, the final evaluation methods occurred to ensure the feasibility of the e-module. The result of this research was an interactive e-module that contains multimodal texts which include written texts, images, animations, videos and games to capture students' interest during the learning process. The validation results indicated that the e-module was valid for all aspects. Therefore, it can be inferred that the interactive e-module using the Flip Builder application on Explanatory Text material with environmental context for high school student was feasible to be implemented in schools.

Abstract

This study investigates students’ perceptions of using ChatGPT as a translation tool. This study aims to find out the students’ perceptions of the use, advantages, and disadvantages of ChatGPT as a translation tool. This study used purposive sampling to find the sample. The total sample for this study was students who use ChatGPT as a translation tool, including 89 out of 109 students. This study used the explanatory sequential mixed method. The data was collected through 21 items of closed-ended questions and five items of open-ended questions. The researchers used descriptive statistical analysis for quantitative data and thematic analysis to find qualitative data. The findings showed that students’ overall perception of ChatGPT as a translation tool was high, with a mean score of 3.42. The construct on the use of ChatGPT as a translation tool was a moderate score (3.38), indicating that students use ChatGPT selectively to translate words, paragraphs, academic texts, and written assignments. The advantages of ChatGPT were rated high (3.56), indicating that students recognized its benefits in reducing proofreading and editing, saving time, language improvement, efficiency, and flexibility. However, the disadvantages were rated moderate (3.19), with concerns about dependency and translation quality. The study concludes that students positively perceived ChatGPT and recognized its limitations. Students use ChatGPT as a translation tool for only a few uses, and ChatGPT is a valuable tool for translation. However, students do not directly feel the disadvantages of ChatGPT because they use ChatGPT selectively.

Abstract

This research explores the learning experiences of third-year English Study Program students in using Google Translate (GT) to support their academic language development, focusing on its practical use, impact on vocabulary and grammar, and related cognitive-emotional aspects. A qualitative approach was employed, using semi-structured interviews with ten participants. Thematic analysis revealed three key dimensions: engagement with the tool, academic development, and cognitive-emotional response. Participants reported that GT was highly practical, accessible, and useful for fostering independent learning. It contributed significantly to vocabulary learning and writing tasks, although grammar support was viewed with some caution. Students also showed awareness of GT’s limitations and reflected critically on their dependence on the tool. The findings suggest that GT, when used wisely, enhances language learning and supports academic success. The research concludes that GT is a helpful supplementary tool, provided students maintain critical engagement and avoid overreliance. Future research may explore the long-term effects of GT use on language proficiency and student autonomy.

Students encounter difficulties when it comes to speaking in online classes, particularly when they are navigating this new era of E-learning during the pandemic. This research aims to find out the speaking problems in E-learning due to covid-19 faced by the 6th semester students of the English Study Program of FKIP Universitas Riau. This research is a descriptive study with a mixed method research. The total of respondents are 74 students. The data collection methods used are questionnaire and interview. The data analysis techniques include data collection, data reduction and conclusion. Based on the research results, it can be concluded that the students experience speaking problems in E-learning due to Covid-19 in three ways: psychological (inhibition, shyness, and anxiety, lack of self-confidence, and lack of motivation), environmental (environmental aspects that make up the learning atmosphere in E-learning), and technological (network problems and facility issues). The most common speaking problems in E-learning due to covid-19 encountered by the 6th semester students of the English Study program at FKIP Universitas Riau are inhibition (mean score of 4.85 and 89,2% students choose strongly agree), an unstable network (mean score of 4.80 and 84,2% students choose strongly agree), and a discouraging environment (mean score of 4.78 and 78,4% students choose strongly agree).
