Abstract

Drugs trafficking via Indonesia's sea routes continues to increase, making the Sunda Strait one of the most vulnerable points for inter-island smuggling. Conventional surveillance using patrol boats is often ineffective due to limitations in range, weather, and response time. This study was conducted to evaluate the potential and effectiveness of utilizing Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) technology in detecting and preventing drug trafficking in the Sunda Strait maritime region. The study used a qualitative approach through a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) that examined previous research results, national policies, and the implementation of UAVs in maritime security. The analysis was carried out by grouping the findings into four main themes, namely the effectiveness of UAVs in maritime surveillance, technical and operational constraints, integration with national security systems, and institutional policies and regulations. The results of the study show that UAVs can double the effectiveness of surveillance through real-time visual detection capabilities, wide coverage, and integration with radar and AIS systems. However, technical challenges such as battery life, extreme weather, and operator limitations still need to be overcome. The study concludes that the integrated application of UAVs, supported by strong institutional policies, can strengthen the national maritime security system and narrow the space for drug smuggling networks in the Sunda Strait.

Abstract

This study examines the strategic role of naval power in World War II by comparing the Atlantic and Pacific theaters. The main issue addressed is how maritime dominance influenced the course and outcome of the war, and how naval strategies adapted to geographic and enemy-specific challenges. The research aims to analyze the impact of sea power, the strategic advantages of maritime dominance in logistics and offensives, and to compare the strategic approaches of both theaters. A comparative historical study with a qualitative-analytical approach was employed, based on literature reviews and document analysis. The findings indicate that naval power was crucial for sustaining supply lines and executing military offensives, with a defensive convoy strategy in the Atlantic and an offensive island hopping strategy in the Pacific. These contrasting approaches reflect military flexibility in adapting to terrain and enemy forces. This study confirms that maritime dominance not only shaped tactical victory but also laid the foundation for the postwar global geopolitical order.

Abstract

This article explores the lessons learned from Lee Hsien Loong’s strategic leadership in maintaining maritime security in the Straits of Malacca, a vital chokepoint for global traffic. Through an analysis of the strategies implemented, including trilateral collaboration through the Malacca Strait Patrols (MSP), the use of advanced surveillance technology, and strengthening military capacity, the article identifies key measures that contributed to security stability. It also evaluates the relevance of lessons from Singapore’s experience to other maritime regions. The findings suggest that Lee Hsien Loong’s integrated approach can be applied to enhance security in other global chokepoints, offering an effective model for addressing maritime security challenges across contexts.
