Abstract

English-subtitled videos are a popular and accessible form of multimedia that can enhance language learning by providing authentic input and scaffolding comprehension. Therefore, This study aims to assess the effectiveness of English-subtitled videos as a learning tool for enhancing speaking, listening, and vocabulary skills among language learners. A total of 87 eligible studies were included in the analysis. The results of our analysis, conducted using JASP software simulation, indicate a statistically significant impact of English-subtitled videos on language learning, accounting for 59% of the variance, placing it in the Moderate category of significance. Specifically, the effect size values for speaking, listening, and vocabulary were 0.64, 0.59, and 0.55, respectively, highlighting their positive influence. Furthermore, the present research revealed that studies published in 2022 exhibited the highest effect size, with an estimated value of 0.771, underscoring the growing relevance of this instructional approach in recent years. Additionally, when considering the number of participants, studies with fewer than 40 participants demonstrated the highest effect, with an estimated value of 0.534. This suggests that English-subtitled videos are particularly well-suited for improving speaking skills, especially in smaller sample sizes. These findings offer valuable insights for educators and learners seeking effective multimedia tools to develop language proficiency.

Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the Duolingo application in enhancing students' English vocabulary mastery through a pre-experimental design. A total of 26 participants engaged in a two-week intervention using Duolingo to improve their vocabulary skills. The results of the pre-test and post-test assessments demonstrated a significant improvement in vocabulary mastery, with the mean score increasing from 63.42 to 85.08. The standard deviation decreased from 14.711 to 9.169, indicating greater consistency in student performance following the intervention. The paired samples correlation of 0.693 with a significance value of 0.000 indicated a strong positive relationship between the pre-test and post-test scores, supporting the effectiveness of the intervention. Further analysis using a paired samples t-test revealed a mean difference of -21.654 with a t-value of -10.363 (p 0.001), confirming that the intervention had a significant impact on vocabulary acquisition. The effect size calculation (Cohen's d = -2.032) indicated a large effect size, demonstrating the substantial impact of Duolingo on students’ vocabulary development. The study concludes that Duolingo can serve as an effective supplementary tool for vocabulary acquisition in English language learning. Future research is encouraged to explore the long-term effects of the application, its influence on other language skills, and its potential integration into formal educational contexts.

Abstract

Essentially, language professionals have offered a plenty of fascinating and enjoyable language education approaches and ideas. Media realia is one of the alternative strategies presented in this study. The purpose of this research is to investigate the impact of using realia media to teach English to young children. The study was conducted at the Sang Surya Muhammadiyah Boarding School Kindergarten in Mataram with 11 children as the sample. The pre-experimental approach, namely pre-test and post-test group design was applied in this research. The instruments to gather the data were observation, a vocabulary test and recording, while the data collection procedure was done through pre-test, treatment and post test. Finally, the data were analyzed using a pre-experimental formula in the form of statistical computation. The result shows that the comparison of the t-test and t-table is 3.21 ≥ 2.60, or the test results exceed the minimal accomplishment levels. It revealed that the use of the "realia" technique has a significant impact on the development of children's vocabulary learning.  In another words, the use of "Realia" technique in teaching English to young children at MBS Batu Ringgit is "effective" when used in the teaching and learning process.
