Abstract

Kitab ‘Uqūd al- Lijjain salah satu karya ulama’ nusantara yang mengatur keharmonisan rumahtangga. Kitab ini menjadi kajian bagi sataban ponok (santri) di Pesantren al- Ashoria di Channa, Songkhla, Thailand untuk mempelajari fiqh keluarga. Dengan pendekatan fenomenologi, tulisan ini menghasilkan Pertama, kitab‘Uqūd al- Lijjain digunakan di pesantren al- Anshoriyah Chana sebagai kajian dalam etika relasi suami-istri ala Imam Syafi’i, dengan metode pengajaran ceramah dan diskusi. Walaupun isi kitab ‘Uqūd al- Lijjain cenderung superioritas laki-laki atas perempuan, kitab ini masih menjadi rujukan untuk membangun keluarga sakīnah mawaddah wa rahmah bagi babo (kiai), nakrian (gus) dan sataban ponok di Pesantren al-Anshoriyah Chana, Songkhla, Thailand. Kedua, civitas pesantren al- Anshoriyah dalam memenej konflik keluarga merujuk kitab ‘Uqūd al- Lijjain dengan teori mu’āsyarah bi al-ma’rūf sebagai pedoman dalam membina rumah tangga, yakni diantara suami istri harus saling memahami hak dan kewajiban masing- masing sehingga akan terjadi rasa saling menghargai dan menghormati diantara keduanya.

Abstract

Pesantren in Indonesia maintain traditional gender structures through formal and non-formal curricula, reproducing male dominance, limiting female participation, and reinforcing patriarchal hierarchies amid rapid social change. This study aims to analyze the dynamics of gender power reproduction and contestation in three pesantren in East Java through a critical ethnographic approach, tracing layered patriarchy and symbolic agency within pedagogical practices and the pesantren curriculum. Conducted in three pesantren in East Java, this critical ethnographic study employed the case study design.  Data were collected through analyses of curriculum documents and kitab kuning (classical Islamic texts), and interviews with 25 actors. The collected data were analyzed through discursive, social, and thematic practices and validated through triangulation of sources, theory, and ideological critique. The findings show that patriarchy in pesantren is multilayered, spanning kitab kuning, pedagogy, and institutional governance, reinforced through normative legitimacy. Informal negotiation spaces, without curriculum reform or institutional mandates, constrain women’s agency. Gender segregation is also layered, including spatial separation, restricted interpretive access, limited negotiation, and the emergence of informal counter-discourses within pesantren life contexts. This study concludes that the reproduction of patriarchy in pesantren is layered and mutually reinforcing. Informal spaces of negotiation, in the absence of curriculum reform, trap women’s agency in persistent structural tension. This study contributes both theoretically and practically by confirming Pierre Bourdieu’s concept of patriarchal habitus, extending the notion of micro-resistance, and proposing a layered reproductioncontestation model for pesantren.
