Abstract

The availability of high-quality feed is a crucial factor in supporting the productivity of beef cattle especially in areas with limited resources and seasonal fluctuations. Particularly during the dry season, the availability of green forage becomes limited and difficult to obtain. This community service activity aims to assist farmers in utilizing locally available materials as economical, nutritious, and sustainable alternative feed. The methods employed include extension, technical training, and hands-on practice in making silage from local ingredients such as Pennisetum purpureum, rice bran, and molasses. The activity was conducted at the Agricultural Extension Center in Waempubbu Village, Amali Subdistrict, Bone Regency, involving 38 livestock farmers representing farmer groups from across Amali Subdistrict. The results of the mentoring program showed an increase in farmers' knowledge and skills in formulating alternative feed. This activity is expected to strengthen feed security at the farmer level and serve as a sustainable empowerment model within smallholder livestock systems.

Abstract

Abstract. The empowerment of women's livestock groups in the Batara Deceng Livestock Group aims to have a positive impact on income both economically and environmentally on laying hen farms. Located in Kajaolaliddong Village, Bone Regency, this empowerment aims to provide guidance to women or mothers of livestock farmers to supply BSF Maggot feed for their laying hen farms. This program uses the Participatory Action Research (PAR) method. The results of this community service activity show that the empowerment program has a positive impact on increasing income and community welfare. Farmers who were previously trapped in the increasingly massive increase in feed prices are now able to stand on their own two feet for satisfactory egg production. The follow-up to this program involves ongoing monitoring and evaluation activities, competency training, participation development, and financial literacy socialization. This activity also emphasizes the importance of active community participation and the role of government in supporting empowerment so that the community can become an economically independent community.

Abstract

Artificial insemination is a widely adopted technique in the livestock industry to enhance breeding performance and improve the quality and quantity of cows. However, implementing this technology in Soppeng Regency is currently facing a challenge that has resulted in low pregnancy rates among cows. Therefore, it is imperative to conduct a comprehensive evaluation to identify the root cause of the unsatisfactory outcomes and find practical solutions to improve the success rate of artificial insemination in the region. This study aimed to implicate the factors influencing farmers' adoption of artificial insemination technology. It was carried out between July and September 2023 in Marioriawa, Lalabata, and Marioriwawo districts of Soppeng Regency, South Sulawesi Province. An explanatory study was used to implicate the factors that influenced adopting artificial insemination technology in farmers by involving 140 respondents and analyzed using binary logistic regression. The successful adoption of artificial insemination technology in beef cattle farmers in Soppeng Regency depends on various factors. While technical aspects and supporting infrastructure are critical, other factors, such as farmers' willingness to adopt the technology, proactive attitudes, and positive perceptions, also play a significant role in farmers’ decision-making. Additionally, regional accessibility, farming maintenance systems, and extension activities are crucial aspects to consider. Therefore, before implementing the technology, it is essential to pay special attention to these areas and provide appropriate interventions to ensure its success
