Abstract

Abstract Coastal areas are vulnerable to various disaster threats, such as coastal abrasion, tidal flooding, and tidal waves, which are increasing due to climate change and the pressure of anthropogenic activities. One effective ecosystem-based coastal disaster mitigation effort is through the preservation and rehabilitation of mangrove forests. However, the limited understanding and involvement of the younger generation in coastal ecosystem management efforts remain a challenge to realizing sustainable disaster mitigation. This community service activity aims to educate the younger generation about the strategic role of mangrove ecosystems in coastal disaster mitigation and implement coastal protection efforts through mangrove planting actions on the coast of Negeri Hila. This community service activity was carried out in Negeri Hila, Central Maluku Regency, targeting high school students as the main partners, with a total of 44 participants. The implementation method used an educational, participatory, and practical approach. The service activity was carried out in three stages: preparation, implementation, and evaluation. The results of the activity showed an 80% increase in participants' understanding, reflected in increased participation and answer accuracy during the question-and-answer session after the material was presented, as well as in participants' high enthusiasm for the entire series of activities.Furthermore, growth monitoring results indicate that the surviving mangrove seedlings are exhibiting good vegetative development despite various coastal environmental challenges. This activity makes a significant contribution to the rehabilitation of the mangrove ecosystem. It strengthens the role of the younger generation as agents of change in supporting sustainable, ecosystem-based coastal disaster mitigation in Hila State. Keywords: coastal; disaster mitigation; young generation; mangrove; Hila.

Abstract

Marsegu Island in Kotania Bay, West Seram Regency, Maluku Province, holds remarkable ecological potential that is worth developing as a sustainable marine ecotourism destination. This study aims to analyze land suitability and carrying capacity and formulate development strategies for marine ecotourism activities covering swimming, fishing, and boating. Data were collected during August–September 2024 through biophysical parameter measurements at three observation stations, supplemented by interviews, questionnaires, and field observations. Tourism suitability was calculated using the Tourism Suitability Index (TSI), carrying capacity using the Carrying Capacity (CC) formula, and strategy prioritization using descriptive integrated analysis. Results indicate that fishing and boating tourism at all three stations fall under category S1 (highly suitable), while swimming tourism at two stations is classified as S1 and one station as S2 (suitable). Carrying capacity ranges from 21–59 visitors/day for swimming, 100–120 visitors/day for fishing, and 144–160 boat units/day for boating tourism. The results of this study recommend that the zoning system be implemented as a policy strategy for the development of marine ecotourism on Marsegu Island, with 4 zoning directions and 6 policy recommendations. Integrated management based on carrying capacity principles and zoning systems is fundamental to ensuring the long-term sustainability of ecotourism in this area.
