Abstract

The rapid development of digital media has facilitated access to and dissemination of information but has also increased the circulation of hoaxes, misinformation, disinformation, and manipulative content. This study examines the concept of information verification in Surah Al-Hujurat verse 6 through Qur’anic exegesis and analyzes its implications for strengthening digital literacy. This qualitative library research employed a thematic exegesis approach. Primary data were drawn from the Qur’an and selected classical and contemporary exegeses, while secondary data were obtained from books and scholarly articles on information verification and digital literacy. Data were collected through documentation and analyzed using content analysis by comparing exegetical interpretations and relating their essential principles to contemporary digital communication. The findings demonstrate that the command of tabayyun entails assessing source credibility, clarifying the accuracy and context of information, and considering its possible social consequences before taking action. It embodies the principles of prudence, critical thinking, objectivity, justice, and social responsibility. In digital literacy, these principles can be implemented through source identification, cross-checking, contextual evaluation, restraint in sharing unverified content, and ethical accountability. Therefore, tabayyun provides a Qur’anic ethical foundation for developing critical, selective, and responsible digital media practices.
