Abstract

Caries can cause dental pain that can reduce children's activities and reduce appetite, which in turn can interfere with children's physical growth. Poor parental attitudes can cause anxiety in children and affect the incidence of oral disease because it makes children less likely to maintain oral hygiene or increased sugar consumption, has been shown to cause plaque accumulation which increases the risk of caries. The study aimed to determine the effect of parental attitudes in feeding on the occurrence of early caries in preschool children. This study used an analytic observational method and was included in a cross-sectional research design. The statistical test used was Spearman; on 60 samples. Based on the results of the Spearman correlation test, the p-va-lue of 0.002 is smaller than 0.05 in the control of eating (COE) category. This means that there is an influence of parental at-titudes in feeding on early caries in children. It is concluded that there is an influence of parental attitudes in feeding on early caries in preschool children, namely in the COE category.

Abstract

Attention must be given to the boarding school students' oral health status.  There is a considerable probability that boarding school students' oral cavities are going to suffer a variety of problems, particularly when they live and stay away from their parent's supervision. Caries risk assessment is used to predict and prevent the development of caries. This study aims to determine the correlation between caries risk assessment with oral hygiene status and parents’ education level in Pesantren Mizanul Ulum Sanrobone. Dental examinations and interviews were conducted on 61 students using the Caries Risk Assessment (CRA) form and Oral Hygiene Index Simplified (OHI-S). The correlation between caries risk assessment and oral hygiene status and the education level of students' parents was assessed using the Spearman test. According to the statistical analysis findings, there was a 0.312 correlation coefficient (r) between the CRA and the OHI-S. Meanwhile, the parents of the students have an education level of -0.198. These results showed a correlation between caries risk assessment and oral hygiene status (OHI-S), and no correlation with the education level of students’ parents. According to these findings, students are more likely to get cavities if their oral hygiene is poor.

Abstract

Breastfeeding is an activity to fulfil infant nutrition, but according to a survey in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), 36.3 million infants are not exclusively breastfed (63%). During breastfeeding, the orofacial muscles are intensely exercised, provi-ding favourable stimulation to the sagittal growth of the mandible, and correction of the intermaxillary relationship resulting in protection against malocclusion. This literature review discusses the relationship between breastfeeding and the incidence of malocclusion in children. This study uses the literature review method with data sources from literature searches on the Google Scholar search site published in 2017-2021. Based on the results of the search for articles related to breastfeeding and mal-occlusion risk, 15 studies revealed that optimal breastfeeding for 6 months or more was associated with a reduced risk of mal-occlusion in children. It was concluded that breastfeeding can prevent malocclusion.
