Abstract

Afghanistan's predominantly rural population faces severe economic and social challenges, such as poverty, unemployment, and migration to urban areas due to over-reliance on agriculture. This study explores the role of rural industries in addressing these issues by examining their potential to improve economic conditions in rural areas and their contribution to the national economy. It also identifies the primary challenges to developing these industries and proposes strategies for overcoming them. Findings suggest that rural industries have the potential to reduce poverty, create employment, and increase household income, contributing significantly to Afghanistan’s rural development. However, inadequate infrastructure, limited investment, and market access remain substantial barriers. This study aims to examine the role of rural industries in the development of rural areas and their impact on Afghanistan's national economy. Additionally, it seeks to identify the challenges and opportunities for developing these industries and propose strategies for improving their current state. In this study, I aim to address the following questions: What role do rural industries play in the economic development of rural areas in Afghanistan? What are the major challenges to the development of rural industries in Afghanistan? And how can the potential of rural industries be harnessed to strengthen the national economy?, This review study utilizes both analytical and descriptive approaches and relies on credible scientific sources and field data. The information collected includes academic articles, government reports, and statistical data related to rural industries in Afghanistan. Data analysis is conducted descriptively and analytically, focusing on the economic, social, and environmental impacts of rural industries. The findings indicate that the development of rural industries can significantly improve the economy of Afghanistan's rural areas. These industries, by creating employment opportunities, increasing income, and reducing poverty, play a key role in strengthening the national economy. Additionally, the identification of challenges such as inadequate infrastructure and insufficient investment highlights the primary barriers to the development of rural industries in the country.

Abstract

Universities are not independent entities separate from society; they are influenced by political and social systems and possess significant abilities to influence various sectors. As a decision-making system, universities play a crucial role in creating suitable conditions for nurturing transformative leaders. The institutional foundation of universities aims to address the developmental needs of society. A successful university believes in itself and seeks indigenous solutions to real problems. The primary objective of this research is to examine the role of universities as the highest educational and training institutions in empowering individuals and society. Initially, the study explored the literal and terminological meanings of empowerment. Then, we highlight the most important functions of universities concerning individual and societal empowerment. After clarifying universities’ role as the highest educational and training institutions, we addressed the question of how universities can effectively contribute to the empowerment of individuals and society. This research adopts an analytical approach that examines and analyzes expert opinions, literature reviews, and previous studies.

Abstract

Social participation is a cornerstone of sustainable rural development, particularly in fragile states like Afghanistan. This study investigates the challenges and opportunities of fostering social participation in rural Afghan communities by analyzing successful international models and proposing practical strategies tailored to the local context. Drawing from global experiences in countries such as India, Bangladesh, and South Korea, the research highlights key factors such as policy frameworks, decentralized governance, inclusion of marginalized groups, and capacity building. The study employs a qualitative methodology, integrating secondary data analysis and expert consultations to identify actionable recommendations. Findings reveal that while Afghanistan’s traditional governance structures, like shuras and jirgas, provide a foundation for participation, significant barriers such as gender inequality, limited decentralization, and inadequate resources persist. The proposed strategies emphasize integrating traditional and modern participatory approaches, leveraging digital tools, and enhancing collaboration between government institutions and NGOs. This research contributes to the broader discourse on participatory rural development, offering insights into building resilient, inclusive communities in fragile contexts.

Abstract

This study explores effective strategies for family economic empowerment by examining successful models from selected developing countries and assessing their applicability in the Afghan context. Recognizing the persistent socio-economic challenges in Afghanistan—such as poverty, limited access to finance and training, and gender inequality—the research proposes a tailored framework that integrates global best practices with local realities. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining a quantitative household survey (N=300) with qualitative interviews and focus groups. The quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics, while thematic analysis guided the qualitative interpretation. Findings indicate a 35% average increase in household income among program participants, improved employment rates, and enhanced financial inclusion. The study applies asset theory and the capability approach to conceptualize economic empowerment and contextualize findings. Despite these outcomes, limitations include a restricted sample size and limited generalizability beyond the surveyed regions. This research contributes to the literature by proposing a culturally embedded, evidence-based model for enhancing family livelihoods in fragile contexts.

Abstract

Abstract. This study evaluates whether and how agricultural cooperative membership shapes multidimensional household empowerment in Nangarhar Province, Afghanistan. Objectives were to (1) estimate the Average Treatment Effect on the Treated (ATT) of cooperative membership on economic, social and political empowerment indicators, and (2) uncover mechanisms driving observed effects. Methods employed a convergent mixed-methods impact evaluation: a structured household survey of 420 households (210 cooperative members; 210 matched non-members) analyzed with one-to-one nearest-neighbor propensity score matching (caliper = 0.05) to estimate ATT and balance covariates, alongside 24 purposive in-depth interviews coded using a hybrid deductive–inductive approach in NVivo; scale reliability (Cronbach’s α > 0.78) and integration via joint displays were applied. Results show substantive gains for members: annual farm income (ATT = USD 128.45), access to microcredit (+12.8 percentage points), women’s household decision-making (+17.4 percentage points), and social-capital index (+0.65 points); qualitative evidence attributes these gains to strengthened social capital, peer mentoring, and collective bargaining. The cross-sectional design constrains causal inference beyond ATT estimates and suggests longitudinal or experimental follow-ups.

Abstract

Conflict‑affected rural microfinance faces data scarcity and repayment volatility, limiting sustainable outreach. No prior empirical study has evaluated Digital Financial Twin (DFT) analytics within Shariah‑compliant institutions under conflict conditions. We integrate cyber‑physical simulation with Islamic microfinance, offering the first large‑scale evidence of DFT impact on financial and poverty outcomes. We employ a quasi‑experimental design combining geospatial conflict data (ACLED), loan‑level records from five Islamic MFIs (N = 48,360 loans across 120 rural districts), and UNDP Multidimensional Poverty Index scores. Multivariate logistic regressions, structural equation modeling (SEM), and GIS mapping were implemented using R (v4.2.2) and lavaan (v0.6‑12). DFT deployment correlates with a 5.8 pp increase in on‑time repayment (OR = 1.27, 95% CI [1.18, 1.37], p < 0.001) and a 5.9 pp reduction in default rates (OR = 0.72, 95% CI [0.64, 0.81], p < 0.001). SEM indicates a significant moderating effect of DFT on conflict intensity (β = 0.29, p < 0.01). GIS heatmaps demonstrate sustained outreach in high‑conflict zones. DFT analytics enhance Shariah‑compliant microfinance performance and resilience in fragile settings, informing policy on digital infrastructure investment in conflict‑affected economies.
