Abstract

This study aims to describe the types of spelling errors found in students’ academic writing and to evaluate the effectiveness of the Indonesian Spelling Editing Application (Sipebi) in the editing process of academic manuscripts. The background of this research lies in the discrepancy between the formal linguistic standards required in academic writing and the actual practices found in students’ theses, which still contain numerous spelling errors. Although tools such as Sipebi have been developed to support compliance with the Ejaan Yang Disempurnakan (EYD) Fifth Edition, users’ ability to identify and correct spelling errors remains a significant issue. This research employed a qualitative descriptive method using documentation techniques and content analysis of thesis documents from eight faculties at UIN Walisongo Semarang, covering the period 2023–2025. The findings revealed a total of 215 errors classified into four major categories: errors in letter usage (57 instances), word formation (80 instances), punctuation (78 instances), and foreign word adaptation (8 instances). The most frequent errors occurred in the word formation category, particularly in the misuse of prepositions, particles, and derived words. The study concludes that students’ theses still contain substantial spelling issues, most of which can be effectively detected by Sipebi. However, optimizing the use of Sipebi should be accompanied by structured language training to enhance students’ linguistic competence, thereby improving the academic quality of their scholarly writing in a systematic and sustainable manner.
