Abstract

This study examines the process of affixation, specifically prefixes, in articles published by Mojok.Id in the September 2024 edition. Morphology, as a branch of linguistic science that studies the structure and form of words, serves as the primary focus of this analysis. Utilizing a descriptive qualitative method, the research collects data from article titles to identify and analyze the use of prefixes within the context of modern Indonesian language. The results reveal the presence of 41 instances of prefixes that function to enrich the meaning of root words, creating variation in the delivery of ideas and messages. These findings are expected to provide new insights into the application of morphology in online media and contribute to the understanding of the evolution of language and contemporary culture in Indonesia. This research also addresses existing gaps in the literature by highlighting the distinctive and creative writing style of Mojok.Id.

Abstract

The present research aims to analyze illocutionary speech acts found within the lyrics of the song Kupu-kupu by Tiara Andini from a pragmatic perspective. The analysis of illocutionary speech acts is based on Searle's taxonomy (1969), which categorizes illocutionary acts into five types: assertive, directive, expressive, commissive, and declarative. The study employs a descriptive qualitative method with a pragmatic approach. Data were collected through listening and note-taking techniques, followed by transcription. Data analysis followed an interactive model including data collection, data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate the presence of four types of illocutionary speech acts in the lyrics of Kupu-kupu, i.e. directive, assertive, commissive, and expressive. Directive speech acts manifest as instructions or commands to the listener, while assertive speech acts involve statements of truth or fact. On the other hand, commissive speech acts reflect intentions or commitments to future actions, whereas expressive speech acts convey feelings or emotions from the singer or narrator of the song. This research implies how song lyrics can encompass various illocutionary speech acts that influence how listeners interpret the conveyed messages.

Abstract

The development of social media in Indonesia has created a digital public space that enables people to express aspirations, criticism, and protest. One prominent phenomenon is hashtag activism, such as #BubarkanDPR. This study aimed to analyze the representation of power and public resistance in the digital discourse of #BubarkanDPR. The research combined qualitative and quantitative methods, employing descriptive and interpretative approaches to understand language patterns, symbolism, and public resistance strategies, as well as frequency analysis of words, hashtags, and lexicons to identify dominant patterns and the intensity of public expression. The data consisted of 1,237 posts on the X platform using the hashtag #BubarkanDPR from August 20 to September 1, 2025, collected through crawling using Python and tweet-harvest Node.js, and then manually cleaned. The analysis was conducted using Norman Fairclough’s AWK model of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), covering text analysis, discourse practice, and socio-cultural practice, with the assistance of AntConc 4.3.1 to map wordlists, word frequencies, collocations, and KWIC. The findings revealed that the DPR was represented as a symbol of corruption, betrayal, and democratic failure, while the public expressed resistance through delegitimization, collective calls, and emotional and vulgar language. These results underscore an ideological shift toward anti-establishment sentiments and highlight the role of digital democracy as a battleground for power.

Abstract

The translation of address terms can lead to a transformation in social relations between speaker and interlocutor. This study aims to analyze the transformation of social relations and its contributing factors through the translation of Javanese address terms in the novel Gadis Kretek into Arabic. The data consist of linguistic units that reflect social relationships, such as Javanese words or phrases of address that indicate status, closeness, and hierarchy. The data sources are Gadis Kretek by Ratih Kumala and its Arabic translation Fātatu As-Sajā’ir by Mohammed Ramadhan. The research method employed is qualitative descriptive with a comparative and interpretative approach. Data collection techniques include close reading, identification of address terms, data note-taking, transliteration, and numbering. Data analysis techniques involve classifying the data based on variations of address terms, comparing the forms in the source text (ST) and the target text (TT), and interpreting the linguistic and cultural factors involved. The results of the study reveal that the transformation of social relations is caused by differences in politeness systems and cultural norms between Javanese and Arabic societies. Address terms such as Pak, Mbok/Simbok, Nduk, Le, Mbak/Mbakyu, and Mas/Kangmas undergo transformations in meaning or form in translation, with efforts made to preserve the underlying social relations. In conclusion, the translation of address terms reflects the adaptation of language to the target culture while also demonstrating cultural resistance to maintain the meaning of social relations in character interactions.

Abstract

The present research aims to analyze the use of personification in poems generated by ChatGPT. A qualitative descriptive method is employed to examine the use of personification in the poems produced by this language model. The data used in the study consists of poems generated by the ChatGPT platform. Data collection techniques include observation and note-taking by providing the prompt “create a poem!” to ChatGPT. The data analysis is conducted in three stages: data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. In the data reduction stage, parts of the poems containing personification are identified, focusing on the attribution of human characteristics to inanimate objects or abstract concepts. In the data presentation stage, the poems containing personification are described and explained, accompanied by concrete examples and contextual explanations of their usage. In the final stage, conclusions are drawn based on the analysis. The results of the study show that out of the ten poems analyzed, 28 cases of abstract personification and 33 cases of concrete personification were found. The poem titled Whispering Love stands out for its use of abstract personification, while the poem Harmony of Nature predominantly uses concrete personification. Personification in ChatGPT-generated poems enhances both aesthetic and emotional quality and helps make abstract concepts more comprehensible to readers.

Abstract

The YouTube Auto-Translation (YAT) feature represents an innovation in translation technology development. This feature allows for translating songs into other languages by displaying subtitles. The present research aims to investigate the application of translation techniques in translating the song Janji Setia by Tiara Andini using the YAT feature. By analyzing the translation techniques used, it is possible to identify the tendencies in methods and ideologies of translation. The present research employs a descriptive qualitative method with a product-oriented translation approach. Data is collected through listening and note-taking techniques, then transcribed into written form. The researcher listens to the song’s version in Indonesian and records it along with its English subtitles. Data analysis involves data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The findings indicate that the YAT feature employs nine translation techniques in translating the lyrics of Janji Setia into English. These techniques are established equivalence, linguistic amplification, compensation, reduction, amplification, adaptation, discursive creation, and literal translation. Based on the translation techniques used, it is evident that the method and ideology of the YAT feature in translating song lyrics are oriented towards the target language with a domestication ideology. This research enriches the understanding of how translation techniques, methods, and ideologies are applied in translating song lyrics using the YAT feature.

Abstract

The present research aims to analyze patterns of resistance and negotiation in the translation of material cultural elements from the novel Gadis Kretek by Ratih Kumala into Arabic in Mohammad Ramadhan’s translation, Fatatu as-Sajair. The data analyzed consist of material cultural terms such as physical objects, food, clothing, and other cultural products closely related to the life of Indonesian society, especially Javanese culture and the kretek industry. The research methods used are qualitative descriptive, comparative, and interpretative. Data collection was carried out through documentation, involving reading and noting the material cultural terms appearing in the source and target texts. Data analysis includes data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusions. The results show patterns of resistance in the categories of culinary, buildings, transportation, accessories, and household appliances, where the translator maintains the original terms through transliteration or general equivalents, without cultural adaptation. Negotiation patterns were found in the categories of culinary, buildings, transportation, clothing, accessories, and household appliances, in which the translator provides adaptation or descriptive explanations to make it easier for Arabic readers to understand. Factors influencing these patterns include the absence of direct equivalents, efforts to preserve the original cultural values, cultural differences, and the target readers’ level of familiarity. In conclusion, the translation of material culture in this novel demonstrates a balance between preserving cultural authenticity and facilitating cross-cultural understanding.

Abstract

This study aims to identify research trends, research gaps, and implications for literature learning development related to character values in Minangkabau culture-based literature. The review is needed due to the fragmented nature of existing studies, which tend to address Minangkabau literature, character values, and instructional practices separately, without a comprehensive synthesis to inform integrated learning design. This study fills this gap by systematically consolidating and critically mapping how character values in Minangkabau literature have been studied and applied in educational contexts. The study uses a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method with articles retrieved from Google Scholar (2015–2025). The selection process followed PRISMA guidelines (identification, screening, eligibility, inclusion), resulting in 16 selected studies. Data were analyzed descriptively by categorizing research focus, methods, objects, and findings. Findings show five main themes: oral literature and folklore, learning media and instructional models, modern literature, proverbs, and psychological and comparative approaches. Minangkabau literature consistently contains strong character values relevant to daily social life. However, gaps remain, particularly in integrating character values, literary forms, and cultural contexts, as well as limited use of technology-enhanced learning. In conclusion, beyond mapping trends, this review contributes a synthesized framework linking Minangkabau literary content, character education principles, and pedagogical design. It provides an evidence-based foundation for developing integrated, culturally responsive literature learning models and advances character education scholarship by clarifying how local wisdom can be operationalized into structured, technology-supported learning designs.

Abstract

Taboo expressions in language are often considered inappropriate because they may violate norms of politeness and certain cultural values. In the context of audiovisual translation, particularly film subtitling, taboo expressions are frequently not translated explicitly. This practice is known as the taboo censorship strategy. This study aims to examine the forms of taboo expressions, the application of taboo censorship strategies, and the factors underlying their use in the film Pengepungan di Bukit Duri. The study adopts a qualitative approach using descriptive, comparative, and interpretative methods. The data consist of taboo expressions found in the dialogue of the film Pengepungan di Bukit Duri along with their translations in Arabic subtitles. Data were collected through viewing and note-taking techniques and were analyzed using an interactive data analysis model consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that the subtitle translator of Pengepungan di Bukit Duri employed taboo censorship strategies in translating various types of taboo expressions, including those related to animals, mental disorders, and sexual organs and acts. The application of this strategy is influenced by differences in politeness norms between the source and target cultures, the need to soften expressions through euphemism, and the technical constraints of subtitling, which require messages to be conveyed concisely and clearly. Thus, the translator functions as a cultural mediator who seeks to balance fidelity to the source text with social and cultural acceptability for the target audience.

Abstract

The present research aims to analyse the translation techniques, methods, and underlying ideologies used in translating the Minangkabau song Taragak Pulang into English. The research adopts a qualitative descriptive approach grounded in translation theory. The data consists of the lyrics of Taragak Pulang in Minangkabau and their English translation. Data collection was conducted through direct observation and note-taking, focusing on key aspects of the song and its translation. Data analysis follows an interactive model, which includes data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing/verification. The results show that the translation of this song employs various translation techniques, including established equivalence, adaptation, modulation, reduction, generalisation, amplification, particularisation, and transposition. The established equivalence technique is the most dominantly applied technique to ensure clarity of the song’s lyrics in the target language. In this case, the translation method is oriented toward the target language, utilising eight translation techniques. From the perspective of translation ideology, the analysis suggests that the translation of this song tends toward domestication, which involves adapting the source text to make it more suitable within the cultural and linguistic context of the target language.
