Abstract

This study is to determine the relationship, presentation, and time of separation between the Rote and Sabu languages. The theory used in this study is comparative historical linguistics using a 200-word Morrish Swadesh list. The analytical techniques employed in this study are lexical-statistical and glottochronological methods. The target population of this study consists of individuals from Rote and Sabu in Kupang City, with three participants from each language group. Data collection in this study was conducted by creating a Morrish Swadesh list and using recording techniques. The results of this study indicate that the kinship relationship between the Rote and Sabu languages is at the language family group level, as their relationship is only 16%. Meanwhile, the Rote and Sabu languages diverged in 2,282 BCE. The author's suggestion regarding this research is that readers understand and provide criticism of this research. For future researchers, further analysis is needed to find out the closest kinship sub-branch or the greater percentage of kinship between the Rote language and the Sabu language.
