Abstract

This study aims to describe the construction of the text on violence against children presented by Tempo Media; to describe the injustices carried out and produced by Tempo media practitioners through their news texts; and to describe the textual relations with the social context behind Tempo's news texts. This research employs descriptive qualitative in the form of a critical linguistic perspective. The data analysis technique used in this research is Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis Theory, that is to say, text analysis, discourse practice analysis, and sociocultural practice analysis. The results of this research showed that based on the textual analysis there is social inequality in Tempo’s news discourse. This is known by the use of choice of words (vocabulary) that marginalizes children. The choice of words used by Tempo in its reporting implies an ideology of the legalization of violence against children. Tempo still places children as the weak who deserve to be mistreated. Based on the discource practice analysis, it was found that news of violence at Tempo was still dominant; there might be differences of opinion at the editorial level; news of violence against children was dramatized. Meanwhile, based on the sociocultural analysis, it turns out that Tempo adheres to the ideology of marginalization or the superordination of adults over children. This marginalization practice occurs due to the misrepresentation different from exclusion in which excommunication or exclusion of other groups/people is seen as the others. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mendeskripsikan konstruksi teks pemberitaan kekerasan terhadap anak yang dihadirkan Tempo; mendeskripsikan ketidakadilan yang dijalankan dan diproduksi praktisi media Tempo melalui teks-teks beritanya; serta mendeskripsikan relasi tekstual dengan konteks sosial yang tersembunyi di balik teks-teks berita Tempo. Tipe penelitian yang dipakai dalam artikel ini adalah deskriptif kualitatif dalam perspektif linguistik kritis. Teknik analisis data yang dipakai dalam penelitian ini adalah Teori Analisis Wacana Kritis Norman Fairclough, yaitu analisis teks, analisis praktik kewacanaan, dan analisis praktik sosiokultural. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa berdasarkan analisis tekstual, terdapat ketimpangan sosial pada wacana berita Tempo dengan pilihan kata-kata (kosakata) yang meminggirkan kaum anak. Pilihan kata yang dipakai Tempo dalam pemberitaannya mengandung makna legalisasi kekerasan terhadap anak. Tempo masih menempatkan anak sebagai kaum tak berdaya yang pantas dianiaya. wacana berita mengenai anak sebagai subjek dalam pemberitaan mungkin saja bukan menjadi ideologi media Tempo, sehingga wacana berita anak sebagai objek yang ditonjolkan. Berdasarkan analisis praktik wacana, ditemukan bahwa berita kekerasan di Tempo masih dominan; adanya perbedaan pandangan di tingkat redaksional; adanya dramatisasi pada berita kekerasan terhadap anak. Sementara itu, berdasarkan analisis sosiokultural, ternyata Tempo sesungguhnya menganut ideologi marginalisasi atau superordinasi orang dewasa terhadap anak-anak. Praktik marginalisasi ini terjadi karena adanya misrepresentasi yang berbeda dengan ekslusi dan pengucilan, yang dalam ekskomunikasi atau eksklusi kelompok/orang lain dipandang sebagai the others.

Abstract

AbstractThe aim of this study is to describe the use of google translate as an alternative medium for translating Indonesian to English texts in students’ journals. This study uses a qualitative method with a descriptive approach. The instruments used in this research are questionnaire, interview and documentation. The results 80% stated the results of the translation using google translate were "accurate", 14.28% said "quite accurate", while 5.72% "inaccurate". The results of the google translate was said accurate because google translate has improved the quality of translation from statistical machine translation method to neural mechanic translation. It was quite accurate because the result of translating one long sentence and many paragraphs, google translate gave fair result. While it was said as inaccurate because the translation results from google translate had many flaws therefore the translation results were referred as pre-translations which needed to be rechecked by users. The problem faced by students were related to differences in the structure or pattern of Indonesian and English as well as exactness of words based on context. Based on the documentation study, it was known that the auxiliary verb –is- should be –was- because the activity had happened in the past, while –method- should be –methods- because it was plural so letter –s at the end of the word. Meanwhile, it was found that there were some discrepancies of words from the source language to the target language, including the younger, which especially, the morality aspect, at and in.AbstrakTujuan penelitian ini untuk mendeskripsikan penggunaan google translate sebagai alternatif media penerjemah teks Bahasa Indonesia ke Bahasa Inggris pada jurnal mahasiswa. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan pendekatan dekriptif. Instrument yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah angket, wawancara dan studi dokumentasi. Hasil penelitian yang diperoleh dikategorikan menjadi persepsi mahasiswa terhadap hasil terjemahan menggunakan google translatedan masalah yang ditemui mahasiswa saat menggunakan google translate. Dari hasil analisa data, diketahui 80% menyatakan hasil terjemahan menggunakan google translate “tepat”, 14,28% menyatakan “cukup tepat”, sedangkan 5,72% menyatakan “tidak tepat”. Hasil terjemahan google translate dinilai tepat karena google translate telah mengalami peningkatan kualitas penerjemahandari metode statistical machine translation menjadi neural mechanic translation. Hasil terjemahan google translate dikatakan cukup tepat karena saat menerjemahkan kosakata dalam satu kalimat dan banyak paragraf, google translate akan memberikan hasil yang cukup tepat. Sedangkan tidak tepat karena hasil terjemahan dari google translate masih memiliki banyak kekurangan dan tidak menghasilkan terjemahan yang akurat, sehingga hasil terjemahan disebut sebagai pre-translation atau masih perlu disempurnakan oleh penggunanya. Permasalahan yang ditemui mahasiswa adalah terkait perbedaan struktur atau pola Bahasa Indonesia dan Bahasa Inggris serta kesesuaian kata berdasarkan konteks. Berdasarkan studi dokumentasi diketahui bahwa kata kerja bantu is harusnya menjadi waskarena penggunaannya sudah terjadi di masa lampau, sedangkan method harusnya menjadi methods karena berbentuk jamak sehingga adanya penambahan huruf –s pada kata benda jamak tersebut. Sedangkan untuk kesesuaian kata berdasarkan konteks ditemukan beberapa ketidaksesuaian kata dari bahasa sumber ke bahasa sasaran diantaranya adalah the younger, which especially, aspek morality, at dan in.

Abstract

Abstract. This study aims to describe the effect of using the Quizizz application on the learning motivation of students of the Elementary School Education Study Program (PGSD) at Citra Bangsa University, Kupang. This type of research uses quantitative research with quasi-experimental research methods. The population in the study were all PGSD second semester students who were guided by the researcher and took the Learning and Learning Theory course, totaling 53 students, while the sampling technique used saturated sampling, so that the number of samples was 53 students consisting of class A as the control class totaling 38 students and class B as the control class as many as 33 students. Collecting data using observation and questionnaire techniques, with research instruments used in the form of observation sheets and questionnaire sheets. Data analysis in this study used an independent t-test, but before analyzing the data the researchers also tested the data analysis requirements consisting of a normality and homogeneity test of data assisted by the SPSS version 16.00 application and showed the results that the learning motivation data for the control class and the experimental class were distributed normal, namely the value of sig. in the experimental class 0.200 > 0.05 and the control class 0.176 > 0.05 and the results of the data homogeneity test showed a significant value of 0.089 > 0.05, then both classes had the same variance (homogeneous). The results of the test of the difference in the average learning motivation of the control class and the experimental class also found that the average learning motivation of the experimental class was higher than the average learning motivation of the control class, namely 80.22>70.15 and the value of sig. the independent t-test also showed the results of 0.004 <0.005. Thus, it can be concluded that there is a significant effect of using the Quizizz application on students' learning motivation Keywords: Quizizz Application ; Motivation to learn Abstrak. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan pengaruh pemanfaatan aplikasi quizizz terhadap motivasi belajar mahasiswa Program Studi Pendidikan Sekolah Dasar (PGSD) di Universitas Citra Bangsa Kupang. Jenis penelitian menggunakan penelitian kuantitatif dengan metode penelitian kuasi eksperimen. Populasi dalam penelitian adalah seluruh mahasiswa PGSD semester II yang diampu oleh peneliti dan mengikuti mata kuliah Teori belajar dan Pembelajaran yang berjumlah 53 mahasiswa, sedangkan teknik penarikan sampel menggunakan sampling jenuh, sehingga jumlah sampel sebesar 53 mahasiswa yang terdiri dari kelas A sebagai kelas kontrol berjumlah 38 mahasiswa dan kelas B sebagai kelas kontrol sebanyak 33 mahasiswa. Pengumpulan data mengunakan teknik observasi dan angket, dengan instrumen penelitian yang dipakai berupa lembar observasi dan lembar angket. Analisis data pada penelitian ini memakai uji independet t-test, tetapi sebelum dilakukan analisis data peneliti juga melakukan uji persyaratan analsis data yang terdiri dari uji mormalitas dan homogenitas data berbantuan aplikasi SPSS versi 16.00 serta menunjukkan hasil bahwa data motivasi belajar kelas kontrol dan kelas eksperimen berdistribusi normal yakni nilai sig. pada kelas eksperimen 0,200 > 0,05 dan kelas kontrol 0,176 > 0,05 dan hasil uji homogenitas data menunjukkan nilai signifikan 0,089 > 0,05, maka kedua kelas mempunyai varians yang sama (homogen). Hasil uji perbedaan rata-rata motivasi belajar kelas kontrol dan kelas eksperimen juga ditemukan bahwa rata-rata motivasi belajar kelas eksperimen lebih tinggi dibandingkan dengan rata-rata motivasi belajar kelas kontrol yakni 80,22>70,15 dan nilai sig. pada uji independent t-tes juga menunjukkan hasil 0,004<0,005. Dengan demikian dapat disimpulkan bahwa terdapat terdapat pengaruh pemanfaatan aplikasi quizizz yang signifikan terhadap motivasi belajar mahasiswa. Kata Kunci: Aplikasi Quizizz ; Motivasi Belajar

Abstract

The culture of giving children called ‘matamusan’ from the Tetun tribe is a local culture that should be for its authenticity and sacredness. The procession of determining the children of ‘matamusan’ contains ethnomathematical values not realized by the cultural legatees. This research aims to explore the ethnomathematical elements in ‘matamusan’ culture. In addition, this research can be beneficial at developing context-based mathematical learning materials and a reference in developing the operational curriculum of the education units in the autonomous learning curriculum, particularly in elementary schools. This research employs a qualitative-exploratory method using an ethnographic approach, while observation and interviews are used as techniques to collect data. Data analysis uses data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion. The results of this research show that there are six mathematical concepts  in the cultural procession of determining ‘matamusan’ children: (1) the concepts of one-dimensional geometry, namely a line consisting of horizontal lines, parallel lines, and acute angles, and two-dimensional geometry, namely rectangles and rhombus. (2) the concept of counting; 3) the concept of the median; 4) the concept of the unit of time; 5) the concept of the unit of weight and; 6) the concept of currency, which can be used to develop teaching materials on mathematical content, especially in elementary schools whose implementation is in the form of context-based mathematical problems..

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the values of local wisdom of the Atoni Pah Meto Ethnic in the discourse of the traditional ritual “Helas Keta’ in Timor Island, East Nusa Tenggara, based on an ethnolinguistic perspective. This research employs qualitative-descriptive method. This research is conducted in the three stages namely data collection, data analysis, and data analysis display. The results of the study show that the traditional ritual "Helas Keta" contains various local wisdom values. These local wisdom values ​​appear in linguistic units through the local language of the Atoni Pah Meto ethnic group, namely Uab Meto, which is used by the Atoni Pah Meto ethnic group to communicate. Besides, there are two forms of local wisdom, namely tangible local wisdom and intangible local wisdom. As such, tangible local wisdom containing noble values ​​consists of reed leaves, sticks, stones and water, sacrificial animals, woven bags and betel nut, and tuak. Intangible local wisdom encompasses parable and advice. The values ​​of local wisdom contained in the ritual “Helas Keta” are job description, recognition, kinship and brotherhood strengthening, cooperation and mutual respect, wisdom and justice, confession and repentance, reconciliation, self-purification, love, true peace.

Abstract

This study aimed to explore the perceptions of fourth-semester students of the nurse study program regarding the online learning process for the English nursing course, along with the obstacles encountered and potential solutions to solve the obstacles. The questions of this study are; what are the perceptions of fourth-semester students in the nursing study program regarding the online learning process for the English nursing subject, what are the obstacles encountered in the online learning of the nursing English subject and what are the potential solutions to overcome these challenges? The research utilized a mixed-methods research method by administering questionnaires to all participants and interviewing 5 of them to collect data. The participants were selected by applying purposive sampling in choosing one out of two classes. There are 42 nursing students who actively participated in the English nursing course were chosen to become the participants of this study. The result shows that the students generally held positive perceptions of online learning in the Nursing English subject during the Covid-19 pandemic. They considered the utilization of online methods for teaching the subject to be acceptable and acknowledged the value of online learning as a viable alternative, particularly in the context of the pandemic. They also recognized that online learning had significant merits in the field of education, particularly when faced with obstacles such as the Covid-19 pandemic. Several obstacles were identified, including limitations in the interaction between teachers and students, inadequate network connectivity, the internet quota is limited due to financial aspects, substandard quality of mobile devices, minimal engagement during the lectures, causing adverse effects on students’ eye health, inadequate internal device memory, challenging in understanding the subject matter and limited monitoring of students. To address these, recommendations include: providing clear and structured materials, improving technical support, integrating interactive elements, balancing assignments with explanations, encouraging time management, creating engaging content, facilitating peer interactions, ensuring content accessibility, and establishing clear communication channels. These strategies mitigate challenges, ensuring a seamless learning experience that fosters holistic growth. In essence, this study underscores the significance of overcoming obstacles and implementing effective strategies to create a robust and supportive online learning environment for fourth-semester nursing students in the English nursing course.

Abstract

This article aims to explain the differences in meanings between the words "refreshing" and "healing," and to elaborate on how social factors influence the interpretations of these two words. The method used in this research is descriptive-qualitative. Data collection techniques involve questionnaire, interview, and library study. The data is analyzed based on the sociolinguistic approach. The results of the study show that generally people use the words "refreshing" and "healing" without knowing the meanings of these two words. These words are even used interchangeably and are considered recreational words. However, both words have different meanings, either in terms of internal aspects of language (semantics) or in terms of external aspects of language (sociolinguistics). The term "refreshing" literally means "making you feel cooler or less tired"; and, something very different and interesting. The word "healing" is defined as a process of recovery, both physically and emotionally. In a social context, "refreshing" can refer to pleasant and invigorating social interactions; whereas, the word "healing" can reflect the culture of care and social support in certain societies.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the influence of problem-based learning model/PBL towards narrative text (folklore) writing ability based on local wisdom in second semester students of English Education Study Program in Citra Bangsa University (UCB). This study applies a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design. The sampling technique uses saturation sampling (census) where the total population is less than 30 therefore the total sample in this study is the same as the total population, 20 students. Data collection technique uses an essay test. Before the instrument is distributed, there are validity and reliability tests to obtain the validity of the instrument. The results of the validity test shows that 20 items are valid and reliable/consistent. The hypothesis analysis requirements test consists of normality test, data homogeneity and data analysis techniques using the t-test. The results of the data normality test show that the sig. in the control class 0.333> 0.05 and the experimental class 0.366> 0.05 so that both are normally distributed. While the results of the homogeneity test show that the probability value is 0.449> 0.05, then the two classes can be said to be homogeneous. The results of the difference test on the average of writing ability of narrative text (folklore) based on local wisdom for the control class and the experimental class show that the average of writing ability of narrative text (folklore) based on local wisdom for the experimental class is higher than the average of writing ability of narrative text (folklore) based on local wisdom of the control class, which is 85.35> 77.15 and the score of sig. on the independent t-test shows a result of 0.000 <0.005. In conclusion, Problem-Based Learning model influences narrative text (folklore) writing ability based on local wisdom in second semester students of English Education Study Program in Citra Bangsa University (UCB).

Abstract

This community service aims to enable students to recognize and pronounce English alphabets accurately through alphabet flashcards. In addition, this kind of activity is conducted to encourage students to form words and create simple sentences. This activity employs methods of lecture, discussion, and demonstration. The results of this activity show that students are now able to pronounce the English alphabet and construct words and simple sentences. Consequently, students have become interested in learning English.

Abstract

AbstrakTujuan dari kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat (abdimas) ini adalah untuk membangkitkan motivasi belajar bahasa Inggris anak-anak Panti Asuhan St. Louis de Monfort-Sikumana. Pembangkitan motivasi belajar bahasa Inggris ini ditempuh melalui games and songs atau permaian dan lagu. Metode yang digunakan pada kegiatan abdimas ini adalah permainan, lagu, dan demonstrasi. Terdapat tiga tahap dalam kegiatan ini, yakni persiapan, pelaksanaan, dan penyusunan laporan. Hasil dari kegiatan ini menunjukkan bahwa anak-anak lebih antusias dalam belajar bahasa Inggris lewat games and songs. Bahkan, anak-anak juga bisa dengan mudah menguasai kosakata baru, memiliki ketrampilan berbahasa dan pengucapan yang baik, serta cukup mahir menguasai tata bahasa Inggris. Kata Kunci : motivasi belajar, bahasa Inggris, games and songs AbtsractThis community service activity aims to foster motivation for learning the English language among the children of St. Louis de Monfort-Sikumana Orphanage. This is achieved through the use of games and songs as a means of stimulation. The methods employed in this community service activity include games, songs, and demonstrations. The activity consists of three stages: preparation, implementation, and report preparation. The results of this activity indicate that the children are more enthusiastic about learning English through games and songs. Moreover, they can easily acquire new vocabulary, possess language skills and good pronunciation, and are proficient in mastering English grammar.
