Abstract

ABSTRACT: The system of British Resident government was introduced in Brunei on early twenteeth century. By implementing this system, Brunei is one of nation in Southeast Asian countries which be ruled by British indirectly. Similar with other British ruled regions in Southeast Asia, especially to Malay peninsula’s case, the Sultanate of Brunei has also to receive the advises on social, economic and political matters from British Resident. Exceptly is concerning on the Islamic religion matters. As its consequences, the Brunei faced the changes not only in social, political and economic field but also in management of government and in regulation of Land Code. The later case indicates that regulating on land in Brunei traditionally was also changed by modern Land Code respectively in early twentieth century. However, this paperwork tries to explain how the signing of 1905/1906 Supplementary Agreement resulted in the formulation of Land Code 1907. The signing of this agreement shows that the British were concerned with Brunei’s survival which was very much affected by the land issues in Brunei. With the Land Code 1907, the boundaries of the Sultanate were made clear and subsequently played its roles in improving and sustaining Brunei’s economy. In one way or another, the Land Code was responsible for increasing in revenue through income from rubber plantation, and oil and gas industry. Thus, it acts as a catalyst for the development in Brunei and Brunei was able to transform from an economically unstable country to a country which is blessed with prosperity. All of these achievements are achieved due to the endless effort of the government in implementing the Land Code in Brunei. Key words: Brunei Sultanate, British Resident government, Land Code of 1907, and political, economic and social changes in Brunei.About the Author: Dr. Haji Awg Asbol bin Haji Mail ialah Pensyarah Kanan di Jabatan Sejarah, Fakulti Sastera dan Sains Sosial UBD (Universiti Brunei Darussalam). Abstract

ABSTRACT: Brunei Darussalam is known to be one of the countries in contemporary Southeast Asia which has not experienced the birth of modern radical Muslims or Islamic organizations on its own soil. Obviously, the political system and state structure have a lot to do with such a condition; however, from the purely socio-religious perspective it is certainly interesting to examine the educational and religious backgrounds of the countrys Muslim leaders and scholars or ‘ulama’. This paper addresses the structural link between state and education, especially religious education, and its impact on the kind of education, training and career Bruneis ‘ulama’ have. Bruneis prominent ‘ulama’ went through particular educational centers and underwent certain training. However, they also had diverse interests and extra-activities which eventually formed their personal stature and religious characteristics. By identifying the many facets of their intellectual passages and training, this paper sheds some light on how the scholar-cum-leaders fit to the state structure and maintain religious stability in the country.KEY WORDS: state of Brunei, religious education, impact on society, the scholar-cum-leaders, and religious stability in the country.  About the Authors: Assoc. Abstract

ABSTRACT: This article discusses the formation of the major governing institutions such as Wazir, Ceteria and Manteri of Brunei in 19th century. Such institutions, in fact, manifested the long established governing practices. The appointment of Wazir and Ceteria required strict criteria, including a close relationship to the core nobility or even the Sultan’s kin. However, a Manteri was normally appointed from among the non-nobility (meaning: not Pengiran), who achieved excellence in charisma, leadership and/or influence in society. The Wazir consisted of Pengiran Bendahara, Pengiran Pemanca, Pengiran Digadong, and Pengiran Temenggung. Each of these governing institutions was granted elite roles and power under the paramount leadership of the Sultan. Their power, however, was confined to the status granted to them respectively. Their roles were not limited to political affairs, but also to economy, social development, people’s welfare, religion and state customs. The formation of the elite institutions of Wazir, Ceteria and Manteri under the authority of the Sultan had the impact on the social stratification of the ruling class on the one hand, and the ruled on the other, comprising the ordinary members of the population in 19th century. This governing structure had been designed in such a way that succeeded in uplifting the aura of the Brunei Malay Sultanate as well as buttressing the Sultanate family which prevail in the Malay world.Key words: institution of Wazir, Ceteria and Menteri, its positions and roles in the Brunei Malay Suiltanate. About the Author: Dr. Haji Awg Asbol bin Haji Mail ialah Pensyarah di Jabatan Sejarah, Fakulti Sastera dan Sains Sosial UBD (Universiti Brunei Darussalam).
