Abstract

This paper analyzes the short story "Kisah Sebuah Celana Pendek" by Idrus to uncover new interpretations regarding the representation of resistance carried out by colonial subjects or groups. The theoretical framework employed in this study is subaltern theory—an idea referring to groups considered voiceless or incapable of speaking—through a postcolonial critical reading inspired by Gayatri Spivak. The analysis method utilizes deconstruction to open up the possibility of generating new meanings from the discourse. The findings of this analysis reveal that there is resistance against colonial hegemonic power, as represented by Kusno, who stands as a figure of the subaltern. Interestingly, Kusno’s resistance is shaped by an existential inner struggle, manifesting as overt defiance and quiet resistance. Unfortunately, this resistance is ambivalent, as it simultaneously offers hope while exposing the subject’s powerlessness in facing reality. This, in turn, reaffirms the notion that the subaltern is perpetually trapped within the power hegemony.

Abstract

This research was motivated by the author's interest in literary works, particularly Safar Nurhan's novel Sapa Bilang Pelaut Mata Keranjang, which depicts the social life of coastal communities. The purpose of this research is to analyze and reveal the author's social criticism of the social reality in Safar Nurhan's novel Sapa Bilang Pelaut Mata Keranjang. This novel represents various social issues that occur in coastal communities, such as economic inequality, weak village government bureaucracy, and law enforcement in cases of sexual violence. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method with Ian Watt's sociological approach to literature, which views literary works as a mirror of society. Data collection techniques were carried out through close reading and literature study, while data analysis was conducted by interpreting texts containing social criticism. The results of the study show that the author conveys sharp criticism through the dialogue and narration of characters that describe social inequality and injustice in coastal communities, including social and economic criticism, criticism of bureaucracy and government, and criticism of law enforcement. Thus, this novel not only serves as entertainment but also as a medium for social criticism that reflects the reality of society.

Abstract

This paper aims to examine the short story Tarom by Budi Darma with theoretical knife of orientalism. The method in this study uses descriptive qualitative. The data collection technique uses the close-reading method, while the analysis technique uses the dialectical method. Edward Said’s Orientalism as a formal object and Budi Darma’s short story Tarom published by Kompas newspaper is a material object. The results of study suggest that, first, there is a polarization of ‘West’ and ‘East’ which is represented by the characters in the short story. The West in this case is depicted Germany and the East shown is Japan. Second, it does not only describe the polarization of the West and the East, but also shows the discourse of resistance. Through the depiction of the Tarom character, this short story shows the existence of a Western body with Easten thoughts. Thus, the short story Tarom displays a narrative of reversal of the Orientalism discourse.
