Abstract

This is historical research on traditional oral literature, bakayat, performed in West Sumatra, Indonesia. As preliminary research, it primarily aimed to document the performance and collect its scarcely written sources. Data and sources were collected through observation, interview, and documentation methods. Descriptions of the performance or narrative, narrator or storyteller, text, and context are provided in this essay to introduce bakayat as a Minangkabau art and literature and to place it in a larger literary context. The data were collected by observing and recording bakayat in its actual performance setting, obtaining documents and archives, and interviewing its storytellers. The study found that bakayat is seriously endangered. Used to be one of the most attended performances in the area, bakayat is no longer appealing to young audiences. The sustainability and continuity of bakavat as a local tradition are at stake. Therefore, serious measures must be formulated and taken by the government, local adat dignitaries, and other cultural stakeholders to promote this unique tradition and encourage the young audience to learn and preserve bakayat.

Abstract

The rapid development of information technology has significantly influenced societal lifestyles, including in the economic sector. This study examines the adaptation and transformation of traditional markets in response to digitalization, with a particular focus on Aur Kuning Market in Bukittinggi, a major economic hub in the region. The research employs a historical method, utilizing both primary and secondary sources, including oral and written data. The findings reveal that traders in Aur Kuning Market are gradually adopting digital tools, albeit primarily for communication rather than full-fledged e-commerce. Despite the growing digital presence, traders strive to maintain the traditional characteristics of the market. The study highlights the coexistence of conventional market practices with modern digital tools and underscores the challenges and opportunities associated with this transition.

Abstract

The Tentara Kandjeng Nabi Muhammad (TKNM) movement emerged following the publication of an article insulting the Prophet Muhammad by the Djawi Hisworo newspaper on 1918, while the Aksi Bela Islam 212 movement arose in response to blasphemy allegations against Basuki Tjahaja Purnama (Ahok) in 2016. TKNM was the largest movement during the colonial period, and Aksi Bela Islam 212 became the largest post-colonial movement in Indonesia, both heavily influenced by media. This study examines the role of media in the TKNM and Aksi Bela Islam 212 movements using a comparative historical approach, involving heuristic, verification, interpretation, and historiography stages. Findings reveal a power-media relationship in the rise of mass movements, alongside political factors contributing to the mobilization of TKNM and Aksi Bela Islam 212, led respectively by prominent figures Tjokroaminoto and Habib Rizieq.

Abstract

The regional autonomy of Reformasi has given rise to regional identity issues, including restorations of historical sultanates. This paper aims to explain the use of Siak Sultanate legacy, from identity of Siak Regency to claims of new sultan of Siak. This research was conducted based on historical methods through literature exploration and interview. We found that the regency goverment of Siak has successfully utilize some of the sultanate legacy for identity and tourism, while the situation is more complex for the ‘Sultan’ of Siak. Kekerabatan Resam as ‘official representative’ of Siak sultanate has no declared restoration, while claims to a new sultan have emerged. The controversy centres on the ambiguity of lineage, power of Kekerabatan Resam, knowledge of traditions, and certain motives driving the restoration.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the dynamics of transmigrant life in Ujung Batu Village IV, as well as the patterns of social interaction and economic changes experienced by these transmigrants. The method used in this study is a historical method through four stages: heuristics, source criticism, interpretation, and historiography. The results of this study indicate that the transmigration program in Ujung Batu Village IV, which began in 1982, was an effort to address overpopulation on Java Island and ensure equitable development. Despite facing various challenges such as a lack of initial information, minimal basic infrastructure, and difficulties in social and cultural adaptation, the program showed significant progress, especially after the implementation of the PIR-KKPA pattern. This pattern encouraged partnerships with plantation companies, opened access to productive land, provided training, and marketed crops, which directly improved the economic welfare of transmigrants. Furthermore, harmonious social integration occurs between ethnic groups through social interaction, education, and intermarriage, creating an independent and competitive community.
