Abstract

Indonesia is a country where the majority of its population works as farmers. One of the occupational health risks that can affect farmers is low back pain. An initial study, based on health data from the Matesih Health Center, found that many farmers in the area under the Matesih Health Center's jurisdiction reported complaints of low back pain. Therefore, efforts need to be made to reduce the risk of low back pain. The Mulyo Farmers' Group is one of the farmer associations in Gugur Village, Matesih District. Socialization is one of the efforts that can be made to increase knowledge about low back pain among the Mulyo Farmers' Group. This research used a pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest design. The sample consisted of 48 members of the Mulyo Farmers' Group, selected using simple random sampling. The statistical test used was the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test. The research activities included a pre-test, socialization about low back pain, and a post-test. The results showed that there was a significant difference in the level of knowledge before and after the socialization about low back pain in the Mulyo Farmers' Group.

Abstract

The agricultural sector is an informal sector that often does not receive full attention regarding occupational safety and health. One of the common hazards found in the informal sector is ergonomic hazards. This study aims to identify hazards and assess ergonomic risk among rice farmers in Dusun Gugur, Matesih Subdistrict, Karanganyar Regency. The study was conducted from August to December 2024 using a descriptive observational method with a cross-sectional time approach. The sample consisted of 20 rice farmers selected using accidental sampling. Primary data were collected through focus group discussions and direct field observations. The hazard identification results showed that the most dominant ergonomic risks included prolonged bending postures, repetitive body movements, and the frequent carrying of heavy loads during work. Based on the risk assessment, most farming activities were categorized as high ergonomic risk. These findings highlight the need for ergonomic interventions to reduce the risk of musculoskeletal disorders, which can impact the health and productivity of farmers.

Abstract

Knowledge of fire extinguishers is crucial for enhancing preparedness in the event of a fire, particularly within school environments. This community service activity aims to analyze the knowledge of students at SMAN 4 Surakarta regarding portable fire extinguishers and traditional fire extinguishing tools through an educational approach. The method employed involved a pre-test and post-test design administered to 49 students who participated in a socialization session and a demonstration on the use of fire extinguishers. The results indicated a significant increase in students' knowledge concerning the use of both portable and traditional fire extinguishing tools. This activity not only improved students' understanding but also fostered awareness of the importance of preparedness and individual roles in fire prevention. Direct education combined with practical demonstrations proved to be an effective, engaging, and applicable learning medium. It is hoped that similar programs can be continuously implemented across all schools in Surakarta to cultivate a culture of safety awareness from an early age.

Abstract

Around 223.5 million individuals experienced low back pain, and there were 63.7 million years lived with disability. Multiple studies have identified various risk factors that contribute to the development and persistence of LBP in this demographic, including personal and occupational risk factors. This study aims to investigate personal and occupational risk factors causing LBP complaints among administrative workers at the two largest hospitals in Surakarta City, Indonesia. This study was an analytical observational study with a cross-sectional design conducted at RSUNS and RSDM in June-July 2024, using purposive sampling to select 130 respondents. This study used a questionnaire to collect data on personal and work risk factors such as age, education, gender, length of service, medical history, sitting position, chair backrest height, and duration of sitting in the office. The data was processed using the Somers D test to determine the correlation between the independent and dependent variables. This study found that key occupational risk factors, such as sitting position (p = 0.688), height of chair backrest (p = 0.372), and duration of sitting at the office (p = 0.283), showed no significant correlation to low back pain (LBP) among hospital administrative workers. However, over half of the respondents reported experiencing moderate LBP, highlighting it as an occupational health issue. The findings suggest that commonly measured ergonomic indicators alone may not adequately assess LBP risk in this setting. Therefore, hospitals should implement structured active breaks, work mobility/rest periods, and health education about prolonged sitting.
