Abstract

About 6 out of 10 pupils in Northern Nigerian rural areas are left behind in educational attainment due to poverty, lack of parental support, insecurity challenges, or cultural disparity. This study aims to describe the relationship between socioeconomic status and educational goals in Northern Nigeria and how using and revitalizing Waqf institutions might advance education in the region. Because of socioeconomic factors like poverty, cultural norms, and underfunded educational systems, Northern Nigeria faces significant challenges that impede access to high-quality education and educational goals despite numerous government initiatives. A review of the literature, case studies, and expert interviews are all part of the qualitative technique used in this study. These techniques make it possible to fully comprehend the difficulties the local educational system faces and the historical and contemporary contributions of Waqf institutions to the advancement of education in northern Nigerian communities. Examining pertinent theoretical frameworks and empirical research yields important insights into how Islamic endowment systems can lessen notable educational gaps in the region, which is one of the significant findings of the current research. It also revealed that Waqf models that have worked well in other Muslim countries draw attention to the potential applications for more benefits and to finance education for underprivileged students. Ultimately, the study recommends that including Waqf in educational financing would provide practical, long-term methods to improve educational objectives in the area and lessen the detrimental effects of the socioeconomic crisis.

Abstract

This study examines the legal framework of waqf in Nigeria and its potential role in driving modern economic development. Waqf, as one of the key institutions in Islamic economic law, has historically played a significant role in wealth redistribution, social welfare, and public service provision in many Muslim societies. Despite its substantial potential, waqf in Nigeria remains underutilized due to regulatory ambiguities, low public awareness, and complex socio-political dynamics. This research provides an in-depth analysis of the existing waqf laws in Nigeria, highlighting their strengths and weaknesses, and investigates how regulatory reforms could enhance the effectiveness of waqf in addressing socio-economic challenges. Employing a qualitative research approach, the study integrates doctrinal legal analysis with empirical research to explore the waqf framework in Nigeria and its role in economic development. The findings reveal the implications of developing a more robust legal framework for waqf in Nigeria, emphasizing its role in poverty alleviation, education funding, healthcare services, and infrastructure development, while identifying its potential as a complementary mechanism to state-provided services. The study recommends the establishment of a dedicated waqf commission to standardize regulations, ensure accountability, and promote transparency. It also advocates for partnerships between government agencies, religious institutions, and civil society to raise awareness and encourage public participation in waqf initiatives. By integrating waqf into Nigeria’s broader economic and development policies, the study concludes that waqf has the potential to play a transformative role in achieving sustainable development goals, reducing economic disparities, and fostering community-driven development. The research findings are intended to serve as a foundation for policymakers, academics, and practitioners interested in revitalizing waqf within Nigeria’s contemporary economic framework.

Abstract

In Northern Nigeria, the growing number of out-of-school children and the difficulties associated with vocational education provide a serious obstacle to sustainable development. Socioeconomic disparities, a lack of adequate government financing, and ineffective institutional frameworks are the main causes of these problems. The potential role of restoring waqf (Islamic endowment) organizations as a long-term solution to these issues is examined in this research. In Islamic nations, waqf organizations have traditionally played a significant role in funding social welfare, healthcare, and education. Waqf can offer the infrastructure and resources required to support vocational education and reintegrate out-of-school youth into the educational ecosystem by utilizing their innate values of generosity and community empowerment. The study emphasizes the working mechanisms of waqf and its applicability to contemporary socio-economic requirements by combining qualitative and quantitative research methodologies. It looks at effective waqf models in other Islamic countries and assesses how well they work in Northern Nigeria. It also provides a strategic framework for waqf institution revitalization, which includes capacity building, legal reforms, and waqf integration with current public and commercial programs. The results show that a well-designed waqf system may sustainably fund educational facilities, scholarships, and vocational training centers, lowering poverty and promoting economic independence among underserved areas. The study comes to the conclusion that government agencies, religious institutions, and civil society organizations must work together to revive waqf institutions for addressing the existing challenges in the vocational education, and out-of-school children circle in northern Nigeria. By addressing the dual challenge of vocational education and out-of-school children, waqf institutions can play a transformative role in shaping a more equitable and prosperous Northern Nigeria. Abstract

This study focuses on the contributions Waqf institutions make to community service delivery while critically examining their role in advancing sustainable development in Nigeria. In order to assess the impact of Waqf in sectors including education, healthcare, poverty reduction, and infrastructure development, the study uses both qualitative and quantitative data gathered through surveys, interviews, and document analysis. In order to highlight excellent practices and issues, case studies of prominent Waqf foundations in Nigeria are given, together with their accomplishments and shortcomings. The results show that although Waqf institutions have made important contributions to community service, issues including tax regulatory frameworks, low public awareness, and subpar management techniques have prevented them from reaching their full potential. The report emphasizes that in order to improve the operation of Waqf institutions, legal reforms, capacity training, and public-private collaborations are necessary. With a focus on its alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the study ends by offering a roadmap for utilizing Waqf as a tool for sustainable development in Nigeria. There are suggestions on how civil society, religious institutions, and government agencies might work together to revive Waqf institutions for efficient community service delivery, which would eventually support social cohesion and national growth.
