Abstract

Tafsīr is one of the religious activities in the month of Ramaḍān that do not only sustain the spirituality of the Muslims but also strengthen the socio-moral aspects of their lives. But that do the significance of Ramadan Tafsīr in the Islamic societies cannot be underrated as it has positively impacted the Muslim Ummah in general and Iwo town in particular. It is therefore necessary to expose and document its impacts on the Muslim Ummah in Iwo land with a focus on Iwo town. To achieve this, historical, analytical and phenomenological methods of research had been used. In accounting for the historical background of Iwo and Ramadan Tafsīr in the town, historical method had been employed while analytical method was used in explaining the impact of Ramaḍān Tafsīr on the Muslim Ummah in Iwo town. Phenomenological method was used in relating these impacts to the people of Iwo town so as to determine the extent to which these impacts have taken effects on their lives. The paper discovered that the Impacts cut across the socio-moral and economic as well as spiritual aspects of the Muslims in Iwo town. It also revealed that most of the Mosques where Ramaḍān Tafsīr is done in Iwo town are facing challenges among which are non recording of Tafsīr; not broadcasting it on social media and lacking public address system as the Muffassirun are always talking on top of their voices. The paper concluded by advocating good treatment of the Mufassirūn by the well to do Muslims in the town as well as prompt recording and live broadcasting of the Tafsīr with the intention of wider coverage.

Abstract

(Isrā’īliyyāt) are stories and traditions of Jewish and Christian origin that entered early Islamic writings, particularly Qur’ānic exegesis and historical narratives which have become widespread tools of Da‘wah among Yoruba Muslim preachers. Their uncritical adoption has led to doctrinal confusion, the propagation of fabricated Hadīth, and distorted interpretations of the Qur’ān. These narratives have also reinforced superstitious beliefs, misconceptions about the infallibility of prophets, and blasphemous views regarding the Prophet’s Companions, thereby weakening the (‘Aqīdah) creed of many Yoruba Muslims. This paper examines the implications of Isrā’īliyyāt narrations on the belief system, theology, and religious practices of contemporary Yoruba Muslims. The study employs analytical and historical methods to trace the origin of (Isrā’iliyyāt), and examine its implications among Yoruba Muslims. The paper finds out that the narrations have shaped Yoruba Muslims’ theological perceptions and superstitious beliefs like reincarnation (akúdáyà) and stillbirth (àbíkú) have persisted as a result of (Isrā’īliyyāt-influenced preaching. The paper argues that Islam, as a comprehensive and revealed religion, rejects falsehood, fabrication, and superstition, and that Qur’ānic exegesis must be based strictly on authentic sources and sound scholarly principles. The paper recommends that Yoruba Muslim preachers and scholars undergo proper training in Qur’ānic sciences, Hadīth, jurisprudence, and the Arabic language to ensure accurate interpretation. The paper concludes that curbing the spread of (Isrā’īliyyāt) requires renewed scholarly commitment, intellectual discipline, and adherence to authentic Islamic epistemology, so as to preserve the purity of Islamic teachings among Yoruba Muslims.

Abstract

Background: In multiple societies, such as Nigeria, where various religious communities coexist, religious tolerance is an essential value. An exceptional example of long-lasting interfaith cooperation impacted by Islamic teachings and sociocultural fusion is the Ilorin Emirate. Objectives: The purpose of this study is to investigate the idea of religious tolerance from an Islamic viewpoint, as well as how it has historically and socially been used in the Ilorin Emirate and what that means for societal cohesion and peace.Method: This study uses a qualitative methodology with thematic, historical, and textual analysis. Both original sources, such as the Qur'an and Hadith, and secondary sources, such as academic literature and historical documents pertaining to the Ilorin Emirate, are used to gather data. Results: Justice (ʿadl), compassion (raḥmah), piety (taqwā), and wisdom (ḥikmah) are the four fundamental characteristics that shape religious tolerance in the Ilorin Emirate. Patterns of institutional integration, interfaith social interaction, and educational influence all reflect these ideas. The report also highlights important issues that jeopardize the longevity of tolerance, such as radical ideologies, political exploitation of religion, and socioeconomic disparity. Conclusion: By connecting Islamic theological ideas with their real-world implementation in a regional setting, this study adds to the body of literature and shows how religion can be a basis for long-term interfaith harmony. The results emphasize how crucial it is to improve religious leadership, education, and interfaith communication in order to preserve social harmony in plural society.

Abstract

In the last few decades, gender issues have taken hold of important discussion in the local and international organization despite the fact that Islam has a distinctive view on gender and sexuality compared to other religions and cultures. One of the gender issues with bone of contention is transgender through which masculinity is transferred to femininity and vice versa. This paper therefore attempts to examine this concept among other issues on gender and sexualities as it is becoming the order of the day among the youths in the contemporary Nigerian Society. This is done with a view to using the Hadith of the Prophet recorded in Sahihu 'l-Muslim to address the issue from a religious perspective. The paper employs historical and analytical methods of research. Historical method accounts for the biography of Imam Muslim and brief information of his sahih while analytical is used in analyzing the Hadith in Satitu l-Muslim in relation to transgender. The study reveals that transgender people are as a result of excessive freedom of man to do anything he wants. It also reveals that the act of effeminating and emasculating is strictly detested in Islam. It thus concludes by proffering likely solutions to the issue of transgender in Nigeria in the light of the Prophet's tradition among which are banning of cross dressing, banishing the transgender person from the society and also constraining the influence of transgender in the society.
