Abstract

Background: Patients diagnosed with chronic kidney failure (CKF) and are required to undergo hemodialysis will experience physical and psychological changes. These changes become the source of stress. Although many studies support the beneficial effect of exercise on stress in hemodialysis patients, its implementation as a part of medical treatment is lacking. Aim: To investigate the effect of intradialytic exercise on stress level in hemodialysis patients. Method: This quasi-experimental study used pre- and post-test, conducted on 32 subjects who were collected through purposive sampling technique. The stress level was measured with Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS). Paired-t, Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney tests were used for the analysis. Result: After being given the intervention of intradialytic exercise showed a decrease in the score of stress as indicated by the wilcoxon test gave a value p = 0,021, while on the control group value p= 0,164 as indicated by the paired T test. The results showed no difference in post test the intervention group and control group obtained from the results of the Mann Whithney test with a value p= 0,731. Conclusion: The intradialytic exercise had a significant effect on stress level in hemodialysis patients.
