Abstract

Indonesia is a country with a very large population and the trend continues to increase. The North Sumatra region produces the 7th largest volume of waste in Indonesia, with around 882,033 thousand tons of waste generated. Perumnas Mandala is one of the areas in the city of Medan that has a dense population, where the temporary disposal site (TPS) is not far from residential areas. So the problem of waste management arose at the Perumnas Mandala waste landfill, Percut Sei Tuan district. The aim of this research is to determine waste management at TPS Perumnas Mandala Kec.Sei Tuan. This research uses a qualitative approach with descriptive research type. The population in this study were all residents around Perumnas Mandala. The samples in this study were informants, namely the head of waste officers at the Perumnas Mandala TPS, 2 waste officers at the Perumnas Mandala TPS, and several residents around the Perumnas Mandala TPS, namely around 5 communities around the Perumnas Mandala TPS, using a purposive sampling technique. The research results show that waste management at TPS is still not good due to several factors such as lack of waste transportation facilities, lack of waste officers in managing waste at TPS, lack of community habits in sorting types of waste, limited trucks and trucks that are damaged so they stop working. operating waste transportation for 4 months, this has caused the volume of waste to increase at the TPS. The conclusion of this research is that waste management at the Perumnas Mandala TPS is not optimal, it is recommended that the government and the private sector improve facilities and infrastructure as well as collaborate with the community in managing waste well.

Abstract

Background: Waste haulers are at high risk of various diseases due to direct contact with waste. Good personal hygiene is very important to prevent diseas. This research aims to identify personal hygiene practices and health complaints of waste transport workers at TPS Medan Sunggal District. Methods: This research uses a qualitative approach with in-depth interviews, observation and documentation. Key informants and supporters were selected based on length of service. Results: The research results show that the majority of officers have not implemented optimal personal hygiene practices. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is not used optimally when working, maintaining personal hygiene such as washing hands with soap and using gloves is not done consistently. Several officers experienced health complaints of skin disorders, such as irritation of the scalp and itching of the hands. Conclusion: Lack of awareness of waste transport officers and inadequate facilities such as no hand washing facilities are the main factors causing the lack of implementation of personal hygiene among waste transport officers. Training needs to be carried out regarding the importance of personal hygiene, providing adequate facilities, socialization, and enforcing discipline to increase awareness and compliance of officers in maintaining personal hygiene.

Abstract

Diarrhea is an environmental-based disease, the factors that cause this disease are influenced by clean environmental sanitation and the use of latrines, because if these two facilities are contaminated, there is a risk of being infected with diarrhea. The aim of this research is to determine the relationship between clean water facilities and the use of latrines with the incidence of diarrhea in toddlers in the KB village of Percut Village. This research was carried out in KB Bagan Percut Village, Percut Village, Percut Sei Tuan District. This type of research is quantitative with the nature of an analytical description with a cross-sectional method. The population in this study was all 256 mothers with toddlers registered at the health center and the total sample in the study was 72 toddlers. Based on the results of the analysis using statistical tests, the data showed that there was a correlation between clean water facilities (p = 0.003) < 0.05 and latrine use (p = 0.000) < 0.05 with the incidence of diarrhea in toddlers in KB Bagan Percut Village, Percut Village, District Percut Sei Tuan. Based on the results of the research, it was concluded that there was a significant relationship between clean water facilities and the use of toilets on the incidence of diarrhea in toddlers in the KB Bagan Percut village in Percut Village, Percut Sei Tuan District. It is recommended that Village Officials and Health workers carry out outreach, outreach and supervision in the procurement and use of clean water facilities and types of toilets that meet the requirements.
