Abstract

The title of this research is A Study of Students’ Motivation and Risk-Taking in Learning Speaking at English Education Study Program of Muhammadiyah University of Bengkulu. The objective of this research was the students’ motivation and risk-taking in learning speaking at fifth semester English students in Academic Years 2016/2017 at Muhammadiyah University of Bengkulu and the limited on the research only focus on learning speaking. The design of the research was descriptive research. This method used to get the description by analyzing, interpreting and concluding. In the case, the researcher wanted to find out about the type students’ motivation and risk-taking in the fifth semester. In collecting the data, the researcher met the students in the fifth semester inside and outside of the class. Then the researcher gave the questionnaire. Next, ask the students to answer the questionnaire. After that the researcher took back the questionnaire and accumulated it to reinforce the result of this research. After that the researcher analyzed the data, so the researcher concluded that the type of students’ motivation and risk-taking of fifth semester was extrinsic motivation (62.2%) and analytical risk-taking (60.6%). The researcher suggested that the students to learning speaking more seriously and use the spend time to practice and study. The result of this research could be as a reference for the next researcher. Key word : Motivation, Risk-Taking

Abstract

This study aims to know the difficulties level in writing procedure text by Grade VIII Students at Junior High School 21 in Bengkulu City. This research design used descriptive quantitative method of research. The data collecting technique method used in this study was treatment. In this context, treatment research is referred to an intervention or treatment given to a research subject to observe a specific effect or outcome.  In analyzing the data in this study the researcher using a scoring formula, categorized the difficulty level and determines the level of difficulty. The findings from both assessments reveal that Grade 8th Students at Junior High School 21 Bengkulu City face significant challenges in writing procedure texts, with most aspects falling into the difficult category. In conclusion, the findings from both assessments indicates that the difficulty faced by Grade 8 students at Junior High School 21 Bengkulu City is at the difficult level in writing procedure texts, this difficulty caused by the generic structure and language features. This research can be used as a reference to conduct research related to procedural texts. Keywords: Difficulty, Writing, Procedure Text

Abstract

Digital technology that is used to improve students' English learning skills currently has the aim of developing an English application, such as YouTube, learning application, social media, web, and etc. The students can access from handphone or laptop/computer everywhere, so that they can easier to learning English. It is also can improve the students motivation to learn, because with digital technology the students feel enjoy and not bored to improve their English skills. The objective of this research was to find out digital learning technolgy used by English students in learning English skills. The method used in this research was descriptive qualitative method. The instrument of this research was questionnaire about digital technology in learning English skills. It found that in Speaking skill the students used digital technologies: Social Media (Instagram, Tiktok and Facebook),Youtube, movie,music and Google Translate. In Listening the students used digital technologies: Youtube, Music, Movie. In Reading Skill the students used digital technologies: Social Media (Instagram, TikTOk Facebook), Video and Google Translate. In Writing skill the students used digital technologies: Google translate and Social Media. The dominant digital technology useb by students is Social Media. It is suggested for Englsih students to use more digital technology to improve their English Skills. Key words: Digital Technology, Four Skills, Digital Technology in English Skills
