Abstract

This study explores the challenges and strategies of Buton students in maintaining their local language in the academic environment. This study was conducted on January 7, 2023, at the English Education Study Program, Pattimura University, using a semi-structured interview method with a Buton student. The results showed that students faced obstacles such as the dominance of English and Indonesian on campus, the lack of peers with the same cultural background, and the lack of use of the Buton language in academic activities. The student used several strategies to overcome these challenges, such as speaking with family in Buton during phone calls or visits, teaching younger siblings traditional songs and phrases, and listening to local stories and songs. She also utilizes social media to share buton words or proverbs, so that the language remains in a modern context. This research shows that minority language preservation requires the support of families, communities, and educational institutions. Campuses can support these efforts by providing space for cultural activities, seminars, or linguistic communities. The maintenance of the Buton language helps students maintain their cultural identity while enriching diversity in the academic environment. This collaborative support is important to ensure the survival of language and culture in globalization.

Abstract

This study aimed to explore students' intrinsic motivation in learning English and identify the key factors that contribute to their motivation in the English Education Study Program at Pattimura University. The subject of the research was the 6th-semester students in the English Education Study Program at Pattimura University, academic year 2022/2023. The method of this study was descriptive quantitative. Data were collected using a questionnaire. The result showed that students’ intrinsic motivation for learning English was at a good level based on the responses. Motivation to learn English stems from various factors, such as fun in Learning English, Real-World Application, Increased Confidence, Language and Cultural Exploration, Passion to Complete Challenges, Relationship to Personal Growth, and Practical Implications. This research underscores the importance of creating a learning environment that is fun, practically relevant, and rich in cultural aspects to support students' intrinsic motivation. For future researchers, it is recommended to conduct a study on the Influence of Different Learning Environments. Further research could explore how different learning environments (e.g. online, face-to-face, or hybrid learning) affect students' intrinsic motivation in learning English, as well as how each approach can be optimized to support students' motivation and engagement.

Abstract

With its linguistic diversity, Indonesia faces unique challenges in implementing an effective language policy in basic education. With more than 700 regional languages and a commitment to national unity, cultural preservation, and global competitiveness, the country's language policy seeks to balance the roles of Bahasa Indonesia, regional languages, and foreign languages, mainly English. A qualitative literature review approach was used to analyze existing scholarly works, policy documents, and government reports. This method identifies patterns in language policy implementation and common challenges schools face. It also examines the successes and failures of language policies in promoting national unity, cultural preservation, and global competitiveness. A comprehensive multilingual approach is recommended, integrating local languages in early childhood education, using Bahasa Indonesia as the primary language of instruction, and gradually introducing foreign languages. The study advocates for curricula tailored to local needs, better teacher training, and equitable distribution of resources to address gaps. This approach is critical to ensuring the sustainability of Indonesia's linguistic diversity, preserving cultural heritage, strengthening national identity, and improving students' global readiness.

Abstract

This study explores stickers' semiotic and cultural significance on public minibusses (angkot) in Ambon City, Indonesia, through a multimodal analysis grounded in Roland Barthes' (1964) denotative and connotative meaning framework. The research examines five angkot stickers and investigates how these mobile, grassroots texts encode literal and symbolic messages, reflecting Ambon's sociocultural values, linguistic hybridity, and glocalized identities. The findings reveal that the stickers combine informal and formal Bahasa Indonesia, colloquial Ambonese Malay, and global pop culture references to convey themes of faith, resilience, humor, and social critique. Their placement on angkot transforms these vehicles into mobile billboards, circulating localized messages across urban spaces and challenging traditional notions of static linguistic landscapes. This study addresses gaps in linguistic landscape research by focusing on transient, user-generated signage, highlighting the agency of drivers and local artists in shaping public discourse. It underscores the importance of grassroots creativity in mediating cultural identity. It offers insights into how ephemeral texts contribute to the dynamic interplay of global and local influences in post-colonial urban environments.

Abstract

The purpose of the study is to find out the EFL students’ perspective on the use of mind mapping as a cognitive activity in an academic writing class in the English education study program at Pattimura University. This study took 3 students (1 male and 2 females) from an English education study program. The In-depth interview is the instrument of data collection with qualitative as the research method. The result shows that the EFL students’ perceptions toward mind mapping seemed to have positive responses toward their language learning with several benefits based on their experience during academic writing class, such as the writing of students was more well-structured, increased students writing grades in academic writing and the beneficial using mind mapping made them becomes motivated in writing something. However, in the process, there were several difficulties that some students had to face when using this strategy such as they were to determine the sub-points and doing the mind mapping took more time, energy, and thoughts, and they were confused about where to start making a mind map. The study suggests that using mind mapping in writing classes, with proper support and training, can help students improve their writing skills. Encouraging its use in other subjects and adapting teaching based on feedback can make mind mapping a valuable tool for better learning and academic success. Keywords: Mind Mapping, Cognitive Tool, Academic Writing
