Abstract

The Walewangko Stilt House is a form of Minahasan vernacular architecture that is rich in philosophical values, spatial symbolism, and the cultural identity of its people. General studies on the material and construction aspects of Walewangko have been carried out extensively, but in-depth studies on the symbolic meaning, the relationship between spatial form and cultural identity, and strategies are still needed. This study aims to analyze the role of philosophy and cultural identity in the Walewangko Stilt House through a literature study approach. The results of the study show that the Walewangko House not only functions as a residence, but also as a symbol of social status, harmony with nature, and a binding force for the values of mutual cooperation in the Minah community. The preservation of Walewangko needs to be directed towards a revitalization strategy based on community participation to remain relevant amidst the challenges of modernization.

Abstract

This research purpose are: (1) to identify the potential of the community in the participation or involvement in the design of fishing settlements on the coast; (2) exploring the potential of sustainable natural resources in existing settlements to apply the concept of a sustainable environment and a healthy environment. This research used a descriptive qualitative methods with the collaborative rationalistic community approach’s, with the location of a fishing settlement in RW 3, Leato Selatan Village. Field surveys were conducted in June – August 2022, starting with initial data collection followed by collaborative participatory methods with the community in the form of socialization, observation and design concepts from existing data. The results of this study show that the participation of the community along the coast of South Leato Sub-District is very large in involvement in data collection and design for their settlement area, their response is the potential possessed by the community, in addition to the potential of natural resources owned by the coast of South Leato which is in RW 3 also supports the implementation of design exploration with the concept of a healthy environment (sustainable environment). The conclusions of the research is that design participation in creating a sustainable environment and health environment requires cross-sectoral collaboration consisting of the community and academics (in this case researchers from Bina Taruna University, Gorontalo).

Abstract

The development of a policy strategy for public cemeteries through System Dynamics (SD) modeling is crucial in addressing the pressing issue of limited urban land. This research aims to formulate long-term solutions for the future cemeteries needs. Data was collected through field observations, surveys, and focus group discussions. The analysis employed a system dynamics approach, formulating two different scenarios. Two policy scenarios were developed to evaluate cemetery land sustainability. Scenario 1 represents a baseline condition with existing burial practices and no additional policy intervention. Scenario 2 incorporates integrated interventions, including land expansion, vertical burial implementation, and mortality reduction through public health improvements. The results confirm that SD provides a robust framework for conceptualizing cemetery provision as a dynamic urban policy issue rather than a static spatial allocation. Scenario Two emerges as the optimal strategy up to 2045, reducing annual deaths by 313 individuals (from 5,275 to 4,961), lowering the Crude Death Rate from a high to a moderate category, and significantly easing pressure on cemetery land. This scenario decreases the required cemetery land from 42.99 hectares to approximately 11.86 hectares and increases land carrying capacity by 16.62 hectares relative to the projected deficit. These findings demonstrate that health-oriented policies can function as indirect spatial planning instruments, extending conventional approaches to urban land management under conditions of scarcity.
