Abstract

This paper delves into the multifaceted effect of multimedia usage in Nigerian elections, exploring its role, challenges, and implications for democratic governance. This study relied on media effects theories, such as agenda setting, framing theory, and social influence theory, to analyse the impact of multimedia on voter perceptions, attitudes, and behaviour, as well as its role in shaping campaign strategies and fostering political engagement. Drawing upon a range of scholarly literature and empirical evidence, this study elucidated how multimedia, encompassing various platforms such as television, radio, newspapers, social media, and online platforms, has become integral parts to the electoral landscape in Nigeria. However, alongside its benefits, the proliferation of misinformation and fake news emerged as a significant challenge during elections, exacerbated by the decentralised nature of social media and the digital divide. Political polarisations, social divisions, and the manipulation of social media further complicated the electoral landscape, hindering constructive dialogue and undermining electoral integrity. Regulatory frameworks governing multimedia usage in elections were fragmented and inconsistent, necessitating comprehensive reforms to enhance transparency, accountability, and ethical standards. Addressing these challenges requires a multi-stakeholder approach involving government agencies, civil society organisations, media practitioners, and technology companies. By bridging the digital divide, promoting media literacy, and fostering ethical standards, Nigeria can strengthen its democratic foundations and promote inclusive and transparent electoral processes.

Abstract

This study reassessed the role of journalists and media dynamics in promoting sustainable development in Africa, specifically examining how media ownership structures, profit-driven models, and government policies impact journalistic objectivity and coverage of development issues. The research employs a descriptive survey design with a population comprising journalists and media practitioners and a sample size of 30 respondents from the region. Data was collected through a structured questionnaire, with mean and standard deviation used to analyse responses. Findings showed that media ownership often influences editorial content, with ownership structures limiting journalists' independence in covering sustainable development objectively. Additionally, profit-driven models significantly affect the quality and focus of development reporting, as the pursuit of revenue frequently prioritises entertainment over critical sustainable development topics. Government policies and censorship further restrict media freedom, impeding the balanced and thorough reporting of politically sensitive development issues. Based on these insights, the conclusion reached was that structural reforms and policy interventions are necessary to enhance the media's role in sustainable development advocacy. Recommendations include promoting editorial independence, diversifying funding sources to reduce reliance on commercial revenue and implementing policies to protect press freedom and enable objective reporting on development issues across Africa.

Abstract

Covid-19 took the world by surprise, resetting world events for most of 2020. The educational system was negatively affected as students were forced to remain at home for several months without receiving teacher instructions. To engage the students remotely, most schools adopted e-learning to facilitate instructions so that the students would not waste their academic time to the pandemic. E-learning became a platform to ensure teachers connect with their students outside the classrooms. This study occurred among three purposively selected schools in Keffi Local Government Area Council of Nasarawa State, Nigeria. This research aimed to assess teachers’ perceptions of adopting digital technologies in giving instructions during the pandemic. Findings from the study show that digital technologies were quite valuable and beneficial to the teachers in providing instructions to the students. Further findings reveal that even though digital technologies proved helpful in providing instruction to the students, teachers faced challenges like unstable power supply, high cost of purchasing data and distractions from family members and friends. The study, among others, recommends that government and private individuals invest heavily in infrastructure to enable teachers to be better equipped to give instructions via digital media technologies.

Abstract

This study was conducted to examine social media, herein referred to as SM-driven community engagement, and its role in political awareness creation towards socio-political development in Nigeria. The rationale behind the study was the need for insights as to the place of SM engagement in political awareness creation. The researcher relied on a survey research design using a multistage sampling technique to determine the final population sample for the survey. A Google Forms-aided questionnaire was designed, and a link was shared with the respondents. The findings of the study show greater access to SM platforms among Nigerians, with political information as one of the most prominent contents. SM-disseminated political information creates awareness as youth with greater access become interested in political matters on account of their exposure to such information across platforms. Furthermore, the study also shows that community engagement is enhanced by virtue of the use of SM for political awareness creation. It was also revealed that the capacity of SM as platforms for awareness creation drives community engagement and development in Nigeria. This is particularly the case with respect to the development of political consciousness towards meaningful participation in the political sphere. The researcher concluded that SM-driven political awareness creation creates informed citizens capable of making decisions from an informed perspective toward the development of society in the current digital era.

Abstract

In an era characterised by unprecedented interconnectedness and rapid technological advancements, global communication emerges as a pivotal force shaping contemporary notions of citizenship. The transformative role of global communication in heralding a new era of citizenship, one that transcends traditional boundaries and fosters inclusive engagement on a global scale is the focus of this study. The study is anchored on an interdisciplinary theoretical framework such as the network society theory, theory of global citizenship, and the agenda-setting media theory. The study is based on a survey-based approach and relied on questionnaire as instrument of data collection. Findings showed that there is relationship between global communication and global citizenship. However, the study also showed that factors that influence individuals' perception of identity are in the form of diverse cultures, globalisation and international trade (economic factors), social interactions, media representations, and political events as well as social issues. Furthermore, the study revealed that social media and related technology have promoted global awareness and citizen engagement. Researchers concluded that global communication serves as a herald of citizenship by facilitating cross-cultural dialogue, empowering civic engagement, and fostering a sense of global belonging. Embracing the transformative potential of global communication offers new opportunities for building a more inclusive, empathetic, and socially responsible form of citizenship in the 21st century. It was recommended, among others, that government and other stakeholders must promote digital inclusion through digital literacy programmes across underserved communities.

Abstract

The World Information Order otherwise known as the New World Information Order (NWIO) can also be referred to or viewed as the New World Information and Communication Order (NWICO). The term or concept describes the aspirations and yearnings of the Global South for the establishing of a world where there is democratisation of the international communication system and a rebalancing of the global information flow channels. This conceptual study sought to reassess the concept in light of the development and advancement in technologies including social media – where information flow has been liberalised in diverse ways. The discourse is built around and/or aligned to a democratic liberal approach in respect of the use of social media in the digitally evolving world. The researchers argued that social media reinvigorated the quest by the Global South to ensure information flow worldwide and that is an indication of a fight for democratisation of the communication system. The study concluded that though the traditional media circle gradually tilts to all-encompassing communication and information in the world, the pace is slow and that gap created is now (in some dimension) bridged by social media platforms – Facebook, Instagram, Twitter (now X) and many more.

Abstract

This study examines the influence of political communication strategies on public perception and understanding of godfatherism and godson conflicts in Nigeria. The primary objective is to analyze how media framing, social media, and political rhetoric shape public attitudes towards these political dynamics. The study is grounded in the framing and agenda-setting theories, which explores how media and communication strategies influence and shape public interpretation of political issues through framing and constant focus on such issues. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining qualitative content analysis of media reports and interviews with political analysts, alongside a quantitative survey of public opinions. Findings reveal that traditional media, particularly news outlets aligned with political figures, frame godfatherism as either a stabilizing force or a corrupt practice, significantly influencing public opinion. Social media platforms also contribute to the spread of misinformation, intensifying partisan divides. Politicians' strategic use of campaign messages further polarizes views, with some presenting godfatherism as beneficial while others critique it as detrimental to democracy. The study concludes that political communication plays a pivotal role in shaping public understanding of godfatherism, either fostering informed engagement or reinforcing apathy. It recommends promoting media literacy, encouraging independent journalism, and fostering a more transparent political discourse to reduce the negative effects of biased political narratives.

Abstract

This paper examines the roles and responsibilities in the country’s development toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The media in any society is fundamentally a development partner. Whether combating diseases or disseminating critical messages about development plans and actions to the public, the media is a key stakeholder. In Nigeria, the government, in collaboration with development agencies and other relevant stakeholders, has actively sought pathways to actualize the SDGs. The media are among these important stakeholders. The Nigerian press and media to serve the people and development across the nation present a good opportunity. However, this study observes that after SDGs were developed in 2015 and adopted by United Nations members, they remained unattended after the deadline. Against this backdrop, this study evaluates Nigeria’s development in light of the SDGs. Using a library research approach, the researchers examined the literature to interrogate the roles and responsibilities of the Nigerian media in achieving these goals. The study finds that the Nigerian media played vital roles in the processes leading to actualizing of the goals and identified key areas where improvement is required. It concludes the potential of the Nigerian press and media in paving their way to contribute further to the SDGs actualization and to the development of Nigeria.
