Abstract

This study aims to analyze the use of deixis in the lyrics of the song “Lovely” by Billie Eilish and Khalid using a pragmatic approach. Deixis, as a linguistic element whose meaning depends on context, includes five main types: person, place, time, discourse, and social deixis. The analysis shows that the song uses deixis effectively to convey a deep emotional narrative. Person deixis, through the use of I and you, stands out in creating a personal relationship between the speaker and the listener. Place and time deixis describe the space and duration of the emotional struggle, while discourse deixis provides narrative continuity. Meanwhile, social deixis, although implicit, reflects the universal relationship between the singer and the audience. The results of this study are relevant to previous pragmatic studies, supporting the idea that songs as aesthetic texts can be a powerful medium of communication. In particular, this study highlights that the use of deixis in lyrics not only functions to build context, but also to create a complex and relatable emotional experience for the listener. These findings provide important contributions to linguistic studies, education, and the analysis of musical artworks, while also opening up opportunities for pragmatic studies of other musical texts.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the factors influencing the reading interest of grade 8 students at SMPN 01 Buay Madang. Reading interest is a crucial factor in supporting students' academic achievements and personal development. The study utilized observation and interviews as research methods. Observations were conducted during library sessions and breaks, while interviews were carried out with 27 students to explore their reading preferences and challenges. The results revealed that most students preferred fiction books that were engaging, visually appealing, and had exciting plots, avoiding lengthy and dense texts. Additionally, the use of technology significantly influenced reading habits, with many students opting to read on smartphones or gadgets due to easier access and a wider variety of reading materials. However, some students still preferred physical books due to free access. Challenges faced by students included the lack of diverse and appealing books in the library, distractions from social media and games, and limited time for reading. To enhance reading interest, it is recommended to diversify the library collection, make optimal use of technology, and organize interactive reading activities. By addressing these factors, students' reading interest is expected to grow and contribute to their academic success

Abstract

Reading interest remains a significant challenge for EFL learners in Indonesia, particularly at the senior high school level. This study aimed to examine the relationship between reading fanfiction and students' reading interest within an EFL context. Utilizing a quantitative correlational Research design, the study involved 348 students from grades X and XI at a public vocational high school in East Kalimantan. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire designed to assess students' engagement with fanfiction and their overall reading interest. The instrument demonstrated acceptable validity and reliability. Data analysis included descriptive statistics, normality testing using the Kolmogorov–Smirnov test, and Pearson Product–moment correlation analysis. The results indicated a strong and statistically significant positive correlation between overall engagement in reading fanfiction and reading interest (r = 0.792, p < 0.01). Furthermore, a significant positive relationship was observed between the frequency of fanfiction reading and reading interest (r = 0.620, p < 0.01). These findings suggest that students who engage frequently and meaningfully with fanfiction tend to demonstrate higher levels of reading interest. Unlike previous studies that have primarily focused on qualitative perspectives or examined the effects of fanfiction on reading comprehension and language skills among university students, this study provides quantitative evidence of the relationship between fanfiction reading and reading interest among senior high school EFL learners in the Indonesian context. The findings suggest that fanfiction can serve as an effective interest-based digital reading resource to promote voluntary reading behaviors and foster positive attitudes toward reading English texts.
