Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the extent of awareness of socio-affective principles of language learning and the speaking proficiency level of English major students of Central Bicol State University of Agriculture – Sipocot. This descriptive-correlational research utilized survey questionnaires and the impromptu and extemporaneous speeches to gather the data from the respondents. Results showed that respondents were highly aware about the socio-affective domain of language learning (overall mean of 3.32); proficient along extemporaneous speech (19.52 total average); and proficient along impromptu speech (20.88 total average). Moreover, there is no significant difference in the extent of awareness of the respondents across year level about the socio-affective domain of language learning (0.966 F-value and 0.388 p-value); and there is a significant difference in the speaking proficiency across year level (5.783 F-value and 0.006 p-value). Lastly, it was revealed that there is a significant relationship between the extent of awareness of the respondents about the socio-affective domain of language learning and their speaking proficiency level (r-value of 0.329 and a p-value of 0.017). The researchers recommended that continuous language exposure must still be given importance. Additionally, the active participation of the learners, language teachers, and the school community is pivotal in the language learning of the learners. Multifarious activities inside of the school such as English organization, theatre and debate club, workshops, and school broadcasting club are also recommended.

Abstract

This study aimed to determine the effects of reading subtitles on the vocabulary level of Grade-11 students in a private school in Sipocot, Camarines Sur. The study employed a pre-experimental design with static group comparison and descriptive correlational methods. The data gathering tools used were a survey questionnaire and a researcher-made test. The test was used to assess the vocabulary level of the respondents. The study found that there was a significant difference in the language proficiency of respondents who read subtitles and those who did not, in terms of vocabulary, form, meaning, and use. The respondents who read subtitles demonstrated a higher level of language proficiency in vocabulary compared to those who did not read subtitles. The study also found that there was no significant relationship between the extent of reading subtitles and vocabulary level in terms of form and meaning, but there was a significant relationship in terms of use only. Based on the findings, the study concluded that reading subtitles while watching English films can expand vocabulary level for further purposes.

Abstract

This study was a stylistic analysis aimed at delineating the different social predicaments embedded in the ten (10) song compositions of GLOC-9. Particularly, it sought to: (1) identify the linguistic levels used in cascading the message and style of the songs along with semantics, lexicogrammar, phonology, and acoustic phonetics; (2) determine the stylistic devices under figures of speech used in the songs; (3) define the thematic levels presented in the songs along with the thematic concept and thematic statement; (4) specify the values or morals conveyed in the songs; and (5) discuss the social predicaments embedded in the songs. To further strategize the data gathering, the researchers used the Hallidayan Systemic-Functional Linguistic Theory in order to extract the different linguistic levels in the songs. Thus, the researchers found out that the social predicaments embedded in the song compositions that depicted social realities were: (1) social injustice; (2) violence; (3) prostitution; (4) drug addiction; (5) corruption; (6) gender discrimination; (7) killing; (8) poverty; and (9) brain drain mentality. Ergo, the results being demarcated in this study may help cultivate social awareness and provide positive implications in terms of transcending the minds of every Filipino, which is a crucial determinant in society and more especially in that of the nation.

Abstract

This study investigated the phonological characteristics of angry register expressions in Bikol-Naga as uttered by high school students, college students, teachers, and laborers. Utilizing Praat software for acoustic analysis, variations in pitch and intensity contours of selected angry words were examined. Findings indicate that while universal vocal signals of anger, such as elevated pitch and increased intensity, are present across all groups, culturally specific vocal components and controlled delivery patterns are also evident, particularly among older speakers and those in more formal professions. The analysis reveals how prosodic elements like pitch and intensity, alongside specific phonological features such as glottal stops and voiced velar fricatives, contribute to the expression and interpretation of anger in Bikol-Naga, aligning with existing research on emotional speech and language-specific phonology. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of the socio-phonetic variations of emotional speech in Philippine languages.

Abstract

This study explores the challenges of teaching phonemic awareness among elementary students in multilingual settings, focusing on Filipino and Indonesian contexts. Given the linguistic diversity in both countries, the research investigates how native language interference, resource availability, and instructional strategies affect phonemic recognition and pronunciation accuracy. An exploratory sequential mixed-methods design was employed, combining quantitative assessments from 200 students (100 Filipino and 100 Indonesian) with qualitative insights from interviews involving 20 teachers. Quantitative findings revealed statistically significant differences in phonemic awareness performance, with Indonesian students outperforming their Filipino counterparts, likely due to more standardized language policies. Qualitative data highlighted persistent difficulties stemming from phonetic interference and inconsistent curricular support. The study underscores the need for culturally responsive teaching approaches and localized phonemic instruction tailored to students’ linguistic backgrounds. It is recommended that teacher training programs and educational policies be revised to integrate multilingual perspectives and improve phonemic instruction in diverse classrooms.

Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the effects of colloquial language on the English writing skills of Grade-11 students. It evaluates the prevalence of colloquial language usage, encompassing contractions, abbreviations, and sentence structures. Concurrently, it conducts a comprehensive assessment of students' writing skills, specifically emphasizing grammar, spelling, and coherence. The research methodology employed a quantitative approach, implementing a descriptive-correlational design. A rigorously selected random sample of 83 Grade 11 students from San Juan National High School forms the basis of this study. Data collection procedures include the utilization of a validated researcher-designed survey questionnaire coupled with the systematic analysis of written essays through the application of analytical rubrics. Empirical findings stemming from this investigation underscore the commendable writing proficiency of the students, with 30% demonstrating proficiency in grammar, 80% in spelling, and 28% in coherence. The p>0.05 indicates that there is no significant correlation between colloquial language usage and the level of writing skills of the participants. These findings offer valuable insights into the limited impact of colloquial language on the development of writing skills, irrespective of prevailing linguistic variations within society. Consequently, educators are encouraged to consider the judicious integration of opportunities for students to engage with colloquial language within contextually appropriate boundaries.

Abstract

This research study used Pragmatics to examine the language functions of Bikol Proverbs, explore their connections, and understand their importance in the lives of the participants. Specifically, it sought to 1) identify the proverbial expressions that the respondents were familiar with, 2) determine those proverbial expressions that they conformed to and non-conformed from, 3) determine the speech act present in the proverbs, and 4) examine the effects of the proverbial expressions on conformity and non-conformity to social norms. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews and triangulated to strengthen the analysis. An audit trail was utilized to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the findings and to eliminate any bias in the interpretation of the data. The results revealed that the participants had a strong affinity for Bikol proverbs, believing that conforming to these proverbial expressions would shape their lifestyle, moral principles, and standard of living. These proverbs have a significant influence in improving the lifestyle, moral principles, and standard of living of Bikolanos and in instilling values in the younger generation. The preservation of Bikol proverbs, particularly this oral tradition, is recommended for the benefit of locals to value their ancestral heritage including cultural identity, values, and traditions.
