Abstract

Balancing work and family life is a significant challenge for dual-income families, particularly for parents with elementary school-aged children. This study investigates the cross-relationship between work-family conflict (WIF and FIW) experienced by husbands and parenting stress experienced by wives in dual-income families. Utilizing a quantitative survey design, data were collected from 246 dual-income couples with school-aged children. The findings reveal that WIF experienced by husbands significantly increases the parenting stress of wives, while FIW experienced by husbands does not show a significant effect. These results highlight the importance of considering the interactive dynamics within dual-income families and the need for supportive measures to mitigate the negative impacts of work-family conflict on overall family well-being.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the direct role of spousal support in reducing parental stress among dual-earner families in Indonesia using the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model (APIM). Rapid socioeconomic changes have increased parental responsibilities, especially in dual-earner families, heightening parental stress. Using a quantitative cross-sectional design, data were collected from 246 dual-earner couples. Parental Stress Scale and Spousal Support Scale were employed to measure parental stress and spousal support, respectively. Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) analysis revealed significant actor effects: husband's support significantly decreased wife's parental stress (β = -0.356, p < 0.001), and wife's support significantly reduced husband's parental stress (β = -0.341, p < 0.001). These findings emphasize the critical role of spousal support in alleviating parental stress, highlighting its importance in enhancing family well-being. The study offers practical recommendations for interventions and policies aimed at strengthening spousal support to improve parenting experiences within dual-earner families.

Abstract

Work–Family Conflict (WFC) has been widely examined, yet empirical validation of its measurement remains limited in Indonesia. Many local studies rely on translated instruments without comprehensive psychometric testing, raising concerns about cultural accuracy. This study addresses this gap by validating the bidimensional WFC scale, Work Interference with Family (WIF) and Family Interference with Work (FIW), among 492 dual-earner spouses in Indonesia. The results confirmed strong internal reliability (α > 0.78; CR > 0.85) and adequate convergent validity (AVE > 0.50), supporting a stable two-factor structure in which WIF and FIW emerged as related but distinct constructs. The findings highlight culturally embedded and gendered dynamics of role conflict in Indonesian couples and contribute to cross-cultural work–family research. Practically, the validated instrument provides a reliable tool for researchers and organizations to assess role conflict and develop family-supportive workplace policies.
