Abstract

Aims: This study aimed to identify the validity and reliability of the core competencies of The Holistic Nursing Competency Questionnaire and The Holistic Needs of Patients. Methods: A pilot study with a correlational descriptive design was conducted to measure holistic nursing competency and the fulfillment of holistic patient needs in the ICU room of Dr. H. Soewondo Kendal Hospital. The study included 25 nurses and 30 patients. Holistic nursing competency was measured using a questionnaire, while the fulfillment of holistic patient needs was assessed using an observation sheet. Results: The Holistic Nursing Competency Questionnaire is valid, reliable, and psychometrically robust, but the holistic needs of patients were reduced from 33 items to 29 valid and reliable items. Conclusion: The validity test showed that the questionnaire and observation sheet were valid and reliable for measuring holistic nursing competency and the fulfillment of holistic patient needs. The study highlights the need to improve nurses' holistic competencies and address the challenges in fulfilling the holistic needs of patients, especially in critical care areas.

Abstract

Critically ill patients with various complications and symptoms that can affect their quality of life. Acupressure has garnered interest as a potential non-pharmacological adjunctive therapy to accelerate the recovery of critically ill patients in the ICU, a technique that nurses can perform. This study employed a scoping review methodology. Literature searches were conducted across leading medical databases, including PubMed, Science Direct, and ProQuest. Inclusion criteria comprised original studies, systematic reviews, and case reports published within the last five years. The review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. The results show that various acupressure therapy methods used for critically ill patients with clinical conditions such as degenerative diseases and cardiovascular diseases, have the potential to reduce pain and anxiety, improve sleep quality, lower blood pressure, reduce nausea and vomiting, and enhance immune system function for ICU patients. This research aims to provide a foundation for integrating acupressure into holistic nursing care for critically ill patients, thereby improving both their quality of life and recovery.

Abstract

Stroke is a leading cause of disability and death among the elderly. Risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, and chronic stress are often not optimally managed due to a lack of knowledge and adaptive coping strategies among the elderly and their families. This community service activity aimed to enhance the coping management capacity of the elderly and their families in dealing with stroke risk factors through an educational approach based on the CERDIK program (Regular health check-ups, Eliminate smoking, Routine physical activity, Balanced diet and nutrition, Adequate rest, and Stress management). The implementation methods included situation analysis, interactive counseling, coping skills training, mentoring, and pre- and post-intervention evaluation. The results showed a significant improvement in knowledge, health behavior changes, and adaptive coping abilities among the elderly and their families. This intervention proved effective in a community setting and is considered feasible for replication as a primary stroke prevention effort. The community service outcomes revealed that prior to the education, most community members had a moderate level of stroke prevention awareness (46.7%), and some had poor prevention practices. After the educational intervention, there was a notable increase, with the majority demonstrating good prevention practices (60%) and none remaining in the poor category. Post-intervention, a significant increase in stroke prevention awareness and understanding of the CERDIK principles was observed among participants. This intervention is recommended for integration into Puskesmas (community health center) and elderly Posyandu (integrated health posts) programs..

Abstract

Choking is a medical emergency caused by an obstruction of the airway due to food, liquids, or foreign objects, which can lead to serious complications such as hypoxia, brain damage, and even death. Elderly particularly those with swallowing disorders resulting from degenerative diseases, are at high risk of choking. The objective of this choking management training program is to raise awareness, provide education, and equip the community with first aid skills to reduce the risk of injury and death caused by choking. The benefits include increased public knowledge, improved preparedness among healthcare workers, and the strengthened role of educational institutions in first aid training. The implementation methods included analysis, interactive health education, choking response training, mentoring, and pre- and post-intervention evaluations. The results showed a significant increase in participants’ knowledge and skills in managing choking incidents in adults. This intervention proved to be effective in a community setting and is considered replicable as a strategy to improve community capabilities in handling choking emergencies. The community service outcomes revealed that before the intervention, 43.3% of participants had only moderate knowledge of choking management, and some had poor understanding. After the intervention, there was a marked improvement, with 66.7% of participants demonstrating good skills, and none remaining in the poor category. This intervention is recommended for integration into Puskesmas (community health center) and elderly Posyandu (integrated health posts) programs.
