Abstract

Aims: This study aimed to identify the validity and reliability of the core competencies of The Holistic Nursing Competency Questionnaire and The Holistic Needs of Patients. Methods: A pilot study with a correlational descriptive design was conducted to measure holistic nursing competency and the fulfillment of holistic patient needs in the ICU room of Dr. H. Soewondo Kendal Hospital. The study included 25 nurses and 30 patients. Holistic nursing competency was measured using a questionnaire, while the fulfillment of holistic patient needs was assessed using an observation sheet. Results: The Holistic Nursing Competency Questionnaire is valid, reliable, and psychometrically robust, but the holistic needs of patients were reduced from 33 items to 29 valid and reliable items. Conclusion: The validity test showed that the questionnaire and observation sheet were valid and reliable for measuring holistic nursing competency and the fulfillment of holistic patient needs. The study highlights the need to improve nurses' holistic competencies and address the challenges in fulfilling the holistic needs of patients, especially in critical care areas.

Abstract

Critically ill patients with various complications and symptoms that can affect their quality of life. Acupressure has garnered interest as a potential non-pharmacological adjunctive therapy to accelerate the recovery of critically ill patients in the ICU, a technique that nurses can perform. This study employed a scoping review methodology. Literature searches were conducted across leading medical databases, including PubMed, Science Direct, and ProQuest. Inclusion criteria comprised original studies, systematic reviews, and case reports published within the last five years. The review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. The results show that various acupressure therapy methods used for critically ill patients with clinical conditions such as degenerative diseases and cardiovascular diseases, have the potential to reduce pain and anxiety, improve sleep quality, lower blood pressure, reduce nausea and vomiting, and enhance immune system function for ICU patients. This research aims to provide a foundation for integrating acupressure into holistic nursing care for critically ill patients, thereby improving both their quality of life and recovery.

Abstract

The holistic nursing approach is an extensive model covering all aspects of care, including the patient's psychological, spiritual and social needs. Critically ill patients areas requires a holistic approach because the problems that arise are not just physical problems, but also emotional, mental and cultural in nature. The aim of this study was to determine holistic nursing competencies for critically ill patients and the instruments of holistic competencies from several literatures. The review used Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis (PRISMA) guidelines as the analysis method. There were 17 articles reviewed from data found in several reputable databases. Searching for related literature, this article uses data based on Science Direct,Scopus, Pro-Quest,Research Gate and SpringerLink.Liiterature search using Booleon operators "OR/AND". The inclusion criteria used in this review include: encompassing holistic nursing, participants being critically ill patients, articles published between 2018-2023, open-access, written in English, and relevant to the research. Articles that did not use English, reports, editorials were excluded.  Dimensions of the holistic nursing competencies domain, namely the physical dimension, including emotional, psychological, social, and spiritual; By treating patients as complex individuals with diverse needs, the holistic approach can help achieve better outcomes in patient recovery and well-being for critical ill patients. The holistic approach can help achieve better outcomes in patient recovery and enhancing the quality of life for the patient., however the holistic nursing is an extensive model covering all aspects of caring.
