Abstract

This study compares language acquisition in early childhood between urban and rural environments, focusing on the influence of environmental factors on language development. The study identifies that children in urban settings tend to have richer vocabulary, more complex sentence structures, and more frequent verbal social interactions compared to children in rural settings. Through data analysis from 100 children aged 3 to 6 years, it was found that access to media, diverse social interactions, and better educational resources in urban areas contribute to faster and more complex language development. These findings provide important insights to support educational practices and policies in children's language development.

Abstract

TOEFL introduction and awareness activity aimed to deepen students' understanding at SMA Swasta Teladan Pematangsiantar about the importance of English proficiency globally, especially through the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). The activity addressed the low awareness among high school students regarding TOEFL certification as an academic and professional requirement both nationally and internationally. The method used a descriptive qualitative approach with interactive presentations, Q&A sessions, and a brief TOEFL simulation. Data was collected through direct observation of student engagement and feedback during discussions. Presentation media and simplified TOEFL practice questions were the primary instruments. Results showed high enthusiasm among students, many of whom had just realized TOEFL's significance for higher education and career prospects. Some students expressed interest in learning more about TOEFL sections such as Listening, Structure and Written Expression, and Reading Comprehension. The activity also proved that interactive methods effectively captured students’ attention and increased their linguistic awareness. In conclusion, the TOEFL socialization successfully provided essential insight into TOEFL benefits and motivated students to prepare early for future academic and professional challenges. It is recommended that such activities continue regularly with expanded content, personalized mentoring, and more intensive test preparation support to help students meet global standards in English proficiency.

Abstract

This community service activity aimed to enhance the reading comprehension skills of 12th-grade students at SMK Negeri 1 Jorlang Hataran by introducing effective strategies and tips for success in the TOEFL Reading section. Recognizing that many students struggle with reading comprehension due to limited exposure to academic English and test-oriented strategies, this program provided targeted training focused on active reading techniques, vocabulary building, and identifying main ideas and supporting details. The activity was conducted through interactive workshops that included reading practice, discussions, and explanatory sessions. A qualitative approach was used to gather data, including observations, comprehension tests, and student questionnaires. Results indicate that students showed increased understanding of TOEFL question types, improved ability to identify key information in texts, and greater confidence in managing time during reading tasks. The feedback also reflected a positive change in student attitudes toward English reading, emphasizing the importance of early preparation and exposure to standardized testing formats. This initiative demonstrates that strategic socialization of reading techniques can significantly impact students' comprehension and test readiness. It also highlights the importance of equipping students with not only language proficiency but also the test-taking skills necessary for academic advancement. Future programs are encouraged to expand this approach to other sections of the TOEFL and provide continuous support for students’ English development.
