Abstract

Oral Communication is a crucial skill, particularly in higher education, where students must engage and articulate concepts effectively. Nonetheless, speaking proficiency can be affected by other factors, one of them is personal traits. This study seeks to examine the speaking ability of students in relation to their personality types. According to the Big Five Personality’ Theory, people are classified into personality types such as extrovert, conscientiousness, openness, agreeableness, and neuroticism which influence how they communicate verbally. To determine the relationship between the two variables, this study conducted a qualitative method involving questionnaires, students’ speaking ability test, and interview. The findings surprisingly showed that extroverted personality turned out to have small contribution to speaking ability. This trait did not have a strong correlation with speaking skill seems contradictory because extroverts are often perceived as more communicative. On other hand, openness trait has the highest impact in communication. This type likely to participate more comfortably in discussion and construct logical arguments fluently in English. Although students with openness have fewer opportunities to talk than extrovert, their speaking components such as pronunciation and word usage were extremely accurate.

Abstract

Gender equality implementation in education aspect in Indonesia is still far from the ideal criteria. One of the reasons is affected by the patriarchal culture that constructs society’s perspective. The Indonesian government has conducted many studies on gender to promote gender equity and inclusion in Indonesia. As a result, the Minister of Education issued regulation No.84/2008 concerning guidelines for the implementation of gender in education. However, access to education, quality education, and the level of participation of women still lack (Lestariyana, et al., 2020; Lestyoningsih, 2020; Mustofa, et al., 2021; Natasha, 2013; Suwarno, et al., 2021; Tyarakanita, et al., 2021). Thus, it is necessary to conduct a comprehensive literature review to illustrate the implementation of gender equality in schools to promote awareness. Through qualitative descriptive study, a variety of publications and journal articles were analyzed. The literature review was divided into three sections, involving the portrayal of gender equality in Indonesia, gender bias in education, and implementation of gender equality in school. The study concludes some aspects that should be implemented to create a gender-responsive school environment and raise the awareness of the students, including the development of curriculum, learning methods, teacher development, and continuous assessment. Developing all these aspects periodically means breaking down the “traditional” cultural concept of gender, which certain genders sometimes excluded. Development needs to be done to ensure the school promotes and facilitates gender equality.

Abstract

English learning materials in Indonesia need to be designed to be more contextual and aligned with students' local culture, so that teaching materials can be more easily understood and increase their participation in learning. Unfortunately, the learning materials that integrate the sub-regions’ cultures, which reflect the provinces in which the learners learn, are infrequently developed. This gap makes it difficult for students to comprehend the materials since it is not related to their daily life experiences and their local regions. Meanwhile, the potential benefits offered by AI are very promising in developing culturally based materials in EFL context. This study aims to investigate the potential of AI in developing cultural context EFL materials. Through a comprehensive literature review, this study analyzed the literatures from the last five years, focusing on the importance of local culture in English learning materials and the potential use of AI in creating English teaching resources. The results showed that integrating local culture through AI addresses the gap between global-context materials and student needs, making learning more relevant and increasing motivation. Nonetheless, challenges such as cultural bias need to be carefully addressed, as AI may reinforce stereotypes and ignore the richness of local cultural diversity, potentially leading to misrepresentation or discrimination. Therefore, educators must be cautious in using AI to ensure that the materials produced accurately and effectively represent local culture.
