Abstract

This study explores the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the business continuity of micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), specifically within the food sector. The research adopts a case study approach, analyzing how Bittersweet strategically used advertising during the crisis. The findings highlight the crucial role of advertising techniques in influencing consumer behavior, showing how effective promotional strategies can lead to sustained business growth during difficult times. By aligning promotional activities with changing consumer needs, Bittersweet strengthened its marketing efforts, enhancing customer loyalty and brand visibility. It suggests that MSMEs should focus on leveraging digital platforms to reach broader audiences and enhance customer engagement, especially during uncertain times. The success of Bittersweet demonstrates the potential for MSMEs to not only survive but thrive through strategic marketing adaptation, ensuring long-term resilience in the face of future challenges.

Abstract

Islamic banking in Indonesia is expected to play a significant role in addressing social welfare, as envisioned by the principles of Maqasid Sharia. However, there remains an ongoing disparity between its financial achievements and societal contributions. While the industry has shown considerable progress in profitability, its broader societal objectives, such as promoting falah—a holistic state of community well-being—remain insufficiently realized. This study examines the extent to which Islamic banking organizations in Indonesia have achieved their societal objectives, focusing on their alignment with the principles of Maqasid Sharia and the pursuit of falah. Despite its financial success, previous research highlights the persistent challenges Islamic banks face in fully realizing their intended societal impact. The adoption of the Islamic Social Banking (ISB) framework is proposed as a viable solution to bridge this gap. This framework provides a targeted strategy for aligning financial operations with social welfare goals. By adopting ISB, Islamic banks can balance profitability with delivering tangible benefits to society, ensuring alignment with Islamic values. This study further underscores the policy implications for regulators of Sharia banking in Indonesia, emphasizing the need for updated legislation and incentives to promote socially responsible practices. These measures can enhance customer trust, support industry initiatives, and foster sustainable development. By adopting the ISB framework, Islamic banks in Indonesia have the potential to redefine their role in the financial sector, shifting from a profit-centric approach to one that emphasizes societal well-being, ensuring that social welfare remains a central focus of the industry’s growth.

Abstract

This study explores social dynamics through an ethnographic approach through Michael Howlett's policy stage analysis framework. This study uses a qualitative method with a descriptive approach through secondary data collection from the internet and credible scientific journals. The ethnographic approach in policy studies uses policy ethnography as a framework for understanding Michael Howlett's policy stage analysis. This study provides insight into the meaning behind the social, cultural, and political contexts in the stages of public policy. The research findings show that the ethnographic approach through policy ethnography provides a social perspective at each stage of policy according to Michael Howlett's policy stage analysis framework. At the agenda-setting stage, policy ethnography uses an ethnographic approach as an initial step to map priority policy issues from direct observation of the community. At the policy formulation stage, policy ethnography identifies solutions to community needs related to problems faced from direct interactions that become policy formulation options. At the decision-making stage, policy ethnography decision-makers decide on policies to be implemented as a benchmark for desired goals through the social and cultural values of the community. At the policy implementation stage, policy ethnography conducts observations to understand the interaction between the policies being implemented and the responses of the targeted community. At the policy evaluation stage, policy ethnography evaluates the effectiveness of policies that have been implemented and assesses the impact of policies based on community perceptions and experiences. Policy ethnography refers to the social perspective at every stage of the policy. Keywords: Public policy, ethnographic approach, policy ethnography, social dynamics, policy stages

Abstract

This study investigates the impact of socioeconomic and environmental factors on undernourishment, across seven selected countries in Asia and Africa from 2001 to 2020. Employing a fixed-effects panel regression, we analyze the impact of GDP per capita, female employment in agriculture, electricity access, greenhouse gas emissions, and foreign direct investment on the incidence of undernourishment. Our findings indicate that higher GDP per capita, greater female participation in agricultural labor, and improved electricity access are associated with significant reductions in undernourishment. Conversely, elevated greenhouse gas emissions and increased foreign direct investment appear to exacerbate undernourishment. These results underscore the critical need for policymakers to prioritize investments in sustainable agricultural practices, emphasizing low-emission technologies that enhance both efficiency and product quality. Furthermore, expanding electrification and empowering women in agriculture are crucial strategies for strengthening household food security by increasing food availability and diversity. This study provides an integrated perspective on the complex challenge of undernourishment, highlighting the dynamic interplay between economic and environmental policies.

Abstract

This study investigates the factors influencing the hijrah community's decision to contribute to Zakat, Infaq, and Sadaqah (ZIS) during the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia. Drawing upon the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), we examine the impact of religiosity, altruism, subjective norms, behavioral control, and institutional image on ZIS payment decisions. Data were collected through a questionnaire survey of 255 members of the hijrah community and analyzed using ordinal logistic regression. Results indicate that religiosity, altruism, and subjective norms significantly influence the decision to pay ZIS, while behavioral control and institutional image do not. This suggests that individuals with strong religious convictions, driven by empathy and a sense of social responsibility, and influenced by their social networks, are more likely to contribute to ZIS, regardless of perceived ease or institutional factors. This preference for direct giving, motivated by trust and a desire for tangible impact, further explains the limited influence of institutional image. This study contributes to the understanding of ZIS giving behavior within the increasingly prominent hijrah community, particularly during times of crisis, and offers valuable insights for Islamic philanthropic institutions seeking to maximize ZIS collection by tailoring their strategies to align with the motivations and values of this growing segment of donors. While this study focuses specifically on the hijrah community in Indonesia, future research should explore these factors among diverse Muslim populations in various socio-cultural contexts to enhance the generalizability of the findings.

Abstract

The objective of this study is to investigate the influence of foreign direct investment, economic growth, international trade, Covid-19 pandemic on unemployment rates in six developing Middle Eastern and North African (MENA) countries, as well as members of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), over period 2010 to 2021. Quantitative approaches using panel regression fixed effect model are utilized. According to the findings of this study, all of the variable used include foreign direct investment, economic growth, international trade and the Covid-19 pandemic simultaneously have a substantial impact on unemployment rate in six MENA countries. While partially, foreign direct investment, economic growth and international trade have a strong influence in declining unemployment in six MENA countries, while the Covid-19 pandemic variable has a positive relation and insignificant effect on the unemployment rate which indicates that statistically there is no significant difference of the unemployment rate in the years before and during Covid-19 pandemic. In conclusion, since the MENA countries has experienced a high concentration of unemployment particularly among youth for a long time, the government ought to concentrate more on facilitating skills training support for young people. This will ensure that the young people have added value and are qualified in the sectors and fields offered, particularly in foreign direct investment, allowing the FDI to absorb domestic workers. The youth can so, collectively, escape unemployment and enhance productivity in a country, which will also raise the GDP of the country
