Abstract

Rosella flower extract is known rich in flavonoid anthocyanin that has activity as antipollutants. So it has potential to be developed as a facial cleansing products. On previous studies, the optimum formula of roselle flower extract facial wash gell and micellar water has been obtained as water-base cleansing face products. Analysis of the of chemical compounds in both formula is essential to be conducted in order to determine their flavonoid content for their quality evaluation. In the analysis process, validated method should be used to ensure the method is performed in accordance to its purpose. This study aimed to validate the method and analyze total flavonoid content in the optimum formula of facial wash gell and micellar water containing rosella flower extract. The research was conducted using a UV-Vis spectrophotometry and method's validity was determined by analyzing linearity, LOD, LOQ, precision and accuracy parameter. Based on the results of the validation, all parameters of the analysis tested were qualified. The total flavonoid content of facial wash gell and micellar water determined by the valid method were 0.482 ± 0.008 mg QE/g and 0.136 ± 0.001 mg QE/g.

Abstract

Excessive and persistent sun exposure containin UV B radiation to the skin causes both acute and chronic sunburn. Polyphenol compounds contained in red rosella extract (ER1), purple rosella extract (ER2) and telang (ET) extracst have photoprotective activity toward UV including UV B. This study aimed to determine their SPF value, total phenolic content (TPC) and their total flavonoids content (TFC) in vitro and to analyze the correlation between the three parameters. In vitro test was performed by UV-Vis spectrophotometry method and correlation was analyzed statistically using two-tailed pearson, graphic plotting and r-value analysis. Results showed that in 0,8% concentration, ER1 and ER2 having maximum SPF values, while ET having ultra SPF value. There was a very strong relationship between SPF, TPC and TFC in the extracts and all of them dependent in concentration. The higher concentration of extract used, the higher the number of TPC, TFC and SPF value. The photoprotective mechanism towards UV B light of ER1 and ER2 were likely contributed by their TPC, but it was both TPC and TFC for ET.

Abstract

An evaluation of a cosmetic product containing natural ingredients is important to determine its stability and shelf life. This study aims to evaluate the physicochemical aspects and acceptance of Facial Wash Gel Purple Roselle Flower to asess the quality, effectiveness, safety and acceptance of the product after optimization development. The stability evaluation was carried out by cycle testing methods and accelerated stability testing for its physical (viscosity, pH and dispersal power) and chemical aspect. The chemical aspect determined Total Flavonoid Contents (TFC) using UV-Vis spectrophotometry methods. The data were analyzed statistically using the SPSS program using two-tailed T-Test model for cycle test data and paired T-Test sample for accelerated stability test. The product acceptance evaluation was conducted using hedonistic test. Based on the data , it can be concluded that the optimum formula could still maintain its physical stability in cycle tests and accelerated physico-chemical stability tests. Although there was syneresis and pH increasing (P<0.05) during the test but they were not significantly affected organoleptic and TFC in products (P>0.05). All the physical parameters were still met the requirements of facial cleansing gel. The results of the hedonistic test showed that all panelists liked color, smell, texture, clean and coarse sensations and did not give dryness and irritation after use. However, all panelists rather like the foam characteristics that did not meet expectations. It was likely caused by the panelists' personal perception, experience and understanding of foam in a cleaning product.
