Abstract

The growth of cellular telephone subscribers experienced a significant increase compared to other industries. With large and widespread number of subscribers, many operators have established new Base Transceiver Stations (BTS) to keep up with the increase number of subscribers. However, the addition of BTS is not a total solution to offset the increase number of subscribers. The purpose of this study is to analyze the signal quality, coverage area and network repairs by using physical tuning method. In Telkomsel operator drive test data in Minangkabau International Airport area, the RSRP parameter obtained an average sample data area around the site in the range -110 to 0, with a red indicator of 3.35%, an orange indicator of 18.96% and a yellow indicator amounted 36.3%. In this way, this research optimizes physical tuning method, including Re-azimuth which successfully directs the antenna to the badspot area, then changes the height of the antenna which makes it covered farther and tilting the Antenna which succeeds in making the coverage area more optimal. For the next bad spot area, optimization should be done in real time in the field so that the improvement can be resolved properly.

Abstract

The increase in network traffic is caused by an imbalance between the number of users and the provision of network capacity, causing the decrease of network performance. This is often found in densely populated areas with a large number of users so that the use of cellular access services is fairly high. For this reason, it is necessary to optimize the network, one of which is by replacing existing devices (swap). Site 31140_Lubuk Bukit, Pauh District, Padang is one of the base stations that has a performance issue, which has a low throughput value (±5Mbps) and a high traffic value of 83 GB/day with Flexi Multi Radio device type and sectoral antenna. Therefore, the existing equipment is replaced, from the FMR type to the Airscale type which minimizes the use of sectoral equipment and antenna types (3 sectors) to multisectoral (6 sectors). The measurement process is carried out using two methods, namely the COST-231 propagation model for the frequency of 1800 MHz and the Stanford University Interim (SUI) for the frequency of 2100 MHz then the Key Performance Indicator (KPI) parameters with the parameters of accessibility, retainability, integrity, mobility, usage, propagation loss and receive power. The results showed that the optimization carried out by the swap method could improve the site's performance, namely a decrease in traffic reaching 31.42% and an increase in throughput up to 60% and followed by an increase in other parameters that have met the threshold value.

Abstract

Abstract

This article discusses the results of community outreach activities related to the impact of radiation from cellular operator BTS towers in Aie Pacah Village, Koto Tangah District, Padang City. This outreach aims to improve public understanding of the potential health impacts of electromagnetic radiation emitted by BTS towers and provide accurate information based on scientific studies, especially amidst concerns from the local community. This activity involved lecturers and doctoral students from the field of telecommunications engineering, and presented expert speakers. The method of implementing the outreach included interactive delivery of materials, discussions, and question and answer sessions to capture public concerns and provide science-based solutions. Evaluation was conducted using pre- and post-outreach surveys to measure improvements in public understanding. The results of the activity showed that 78% of participants initially had high concerns about the health impacts of BTS tower radiation. However, after the outreach, 85% of participants reported a better understanding of risk mitigation and benefits of telecommunications infrastructure, and felt more confident in the safety of radiation exposure according to international standards. This outreach is expected to have a positive impact on improving public literacy about communication technology and health, as well as encouraging cooperation between the community, government, and telecommunications operators to continue to provide transparent information. As a follow-up, similar activities are planned to reach other areas with different social characteristics.
