Abstract

This article investigates Sufism and its closeness with the so-called mysticism. Indeed, mysticism is chiefly characterized by mystical experience, referring to, broadly speaking, that of union with the ultimate reality. On this basis, Sufism also evinces mystical experience from which the Sufis elaborate some terminological concepts such as fanā’, wahdat al-wujūd, ittihād, etc. As a qualitative study with a type of library research, this article employs content analysis to provide an in-depth interpretation of the texts analyzed, especially literature relevant to the field of study. The results of the analysis demonstrate twofold. On the one hand, Sufism is arguably Islamic mysticism due to its emphasis on mystical experience about God. On the other hand, Sufism has its own uniqueness since it also pays much attention to moral development and human behavior. In addition, Sufism has great contribution and significance to Islamic civilization in particular and modernity in general, ranging from Islamic psychology, metaphysics, art and literary world to human peace and spiritual crisis.

Abstract

This article aims to explore apophatic theology in the light of deconstructive hermeneutics, wherein the two are complementary approaches to understanding divine transcendence and the limitations of human language. With a qualitative approach, this article reads apophatic theology employing the hermeneutical theory of Jacques Derrida. This article found that apophatic theology emphasizes the inability of language to fully describe the nature of the Ultimate Reality or God through the approach of negation. At the same time, deconstructive hermeneutics, rooted in Derrida’s philosophy, focuses on the instability and limitations of meaning in language. This study has broad theoretical and practical significance. From a theoretical perspective, this study makes a new contribution to contemporary theological studies by showing how deconstructive hermeneutics can enrich the understanding of the methodology of apophatic theology. In particular, this study highlights how deconstruction helps reveal the creative dimension in the negation of apophatic theology, which is often seen as merely the elimination of meaning.

Abstract

This participatory research aimed to enhance the ecological consciousness of the Santri (students) of Pesantren Langitan, a traditional Islamic boarding school in Tuban, East Java, Indonesia. This pesantren was chosen as the subject based on its geographical location along the Solo River. From an ecological perspective, this location has facilitated the implementation of various environmental initiatives, including promoting green consciousness among the local community, encouraging reforestation along the riverbanks, discouraging waste disposal into the river, and other similar actions aimed at preserving the river ecosystem. Another factor that contributed to the selection of Pesantren Langitan as the subject was its traditional Islamic boarding school nature, focusing on studying classical Islamic texts (kitab kuning). Therefore, the research will likely contribute to promoting Islamic ecotheology. The research employed a participatory action approach, wherein Kyai, Ustaz, and santri were actively engaged in the program's planning, implementation, and evaluation. The theme-based program yielded successful outcomes in four key areas: (1) enhancing green consciousness among the santri, (2) formulating a green fiqh concept, (3) promoting green da'wa on social media, and (4) implementing green activities within the pesantren environment.

Abstract

This article examines al-Raniri’s views on spirit. In Islamic thought, spirit is an important matter discussed by Muslim theologians, Muslim philosophers and Sufis. They argue with each other about the nature of spirit. Using content analysis, this library research attempts to portray how al-Raniri navigates the complexity of the Islamic thought regarding spirit. This study found that al-Raniri seeks to synthesize various views. Nonetheless, he was more inclined towards the views of the Sufis than the theologians and philosophers. Al-Raniri views the spirit as a subtle substance that is located in the heart and will last forever even if the body is destroyed. Keywords: Al-Raniri, Islamic thought, the human spirit, the nature of the spirit.
