Abstract

Despite the past experiences which banned the praxis of hijab and Islamic dress code in Indonesia, the government of Indonesia currently unveiled its vision to form the country as a global Mecca of hijab and Muslim fashion. The decision formulated by Joko Widodo ? that remained representative of secularist yet nationalist ideology ? rather implied the presence of state in admitting the praxis of hijab and Islamic dress code as its potential means to achieve national interest. Therefore, the analyst sought to address why state eventually desires to establish Indonesia as a global capital of hijab and Muslim fashion in 2020. With reference to the neo liberal international political economy, the analyst came to argue that due to the liberalization in national economy and the world economy transformation the current government consolidated with the issue of hijab and Muslim fashion trend as it promises the development of individual freedom in textile industries. In ways of making Indonesia a newly industrial country in 2020, the government has to find any potential comparative advantage by which the industrial hijab and Muslim fashion that could offer. Key words: hijab, Muslim fashion, industrialization, liberalization, international political economy, Indonesia?s government.

Abstract

Abstract

Although Indonesian migrant workers in Saudi Arabia, particularly at informal sectors, have exponentially increased in last decades, most of the time,  they have also faced several constraints such as the lack of protection that supposedly addressed by the Government of Indonesia (GoI) through Indonesian embassy, limited numbers of regulations that could protect the Indonesian migrant workers from the Government of Saudi Arabia, due to the absence of Memorandum of Understanding between the two countries. Such complex circumstances made the position of Indonesian migrant workers worsened due to their disability in gaining their rights. In the implementation process, the GoI’s protection has not been maximal in ensuring the safety of their workers abroad. The situation reached the peak when the death penalty for Ruyati binti Satubi was conducted by Government of Saudi Arabia without any initiatives informing Indonesian authority prior to the execution. Consequently the former President of Indonesia, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, declared a moratorium policy during the cabinet meeting on June 23, 2011, in order to improve the protection mechanism of Indonesian migrant domestic workers. In milieu of this issue, the researchers attempted at analyzing the impacts of such a policy. The analysis was based on national interest theory. In the context of Indonesian migrant domestic workers, this study came to argue that the moratorium policy could be seen as a manifestation of political commitment from Indonesia’s government perceiving the protection of Indonesian migrant workers is high in the list.

Abstract

Just a few weeks after the terrorist attacks of September 11th, and soon after US troops started to attack Afghanistan, George Bush expressed his disappointment toward the way the Muslim world perceives the American way of life and culture. Assuming that the 9/11 terrorist attack was a symbol of struggle against America’s hegemony Bush blamed the failure of US public diplomacy to promote to the Muslim world the image of a friendly and democratic nation state. It sent a message that both promoting positive image and controlling the message are a highly complex task. The complexity of public diplomacy consequently raises such a theoretical dispute. From a traditional perspective, scholars have questioned the suitability of public diplomacy to promote a states’ soft power, and have cited US public diplomacy as an example of failure. The revisionists, on the other hand, seek to maintain and even improve the practice of public diplomacy by arguing that it is more that it is more pertinent to comprehend the strategy rather than to perpetuate the blame.  The dispute on public diplomacy is threefold: first, whether public diplomacy is defined as any diplomatic activities of or by the public; second, whether diplomacy should really be addressed to the public; and third, if the public is always diplomatic. This essay will argue that while the traditionalist criticisms could be valid, particularly in the context of the US experience, these arguments do not reduce the value of public diplomacy. Such diplomacy requires a two-way relationship and integrated approach.

Abstract

Abstract This study aims to analyze the factors behind the establishment of sister city cooperation between the Denpasar City Government and the Mossel Bay Government since the end of 2019. The author conducted qualitative research to achieve this aim. Thus, this research is expected to enrich other research tools in matters relating to sister city cooperation or paradiplomacy in Indonesia, especially Denpasar. The main data analyzed in this study were obtained through semi-structured interviews with the Head of the Sub-Section for Foreign Cooperation of the Denpasar City in 2020 at the Secretariat of Denpasar. In addition, other types of data that support this research were obtained from the official local government website, several books, journals, reports, and online news sites which reliable and suitable for the content of the research. The focus of this research is to comply with the concept of paradiplomacy and south-south cooperation in identifying the motives behind this sister city cooperation, especially from the side of the Denpasar City Government. As a result, five motives were found that could encourage the Denpasar City Government to accept the sister city cooperation offered by the Mossel Bay Government in 2019, including the international market, tourism and culture, establishing the identity of international partners, the status of government administration, and most importantly, the bilateral relationship between the Indonesian government and the South African government, which in this regards, is an example of the implementation of the South-South Cooperation (SSC) concept.

Abstract

Hijab and its practices grow consistently as an iconic fashion of Muslim womenin Indonesia. This phenomenon yields scholarly commentaries pertaining tothe motivation of hijab’s massive production and Muslim women in veilingas well as the socioeconomic impact it carries with. However, the discussionon what sources of power underlie such a trend is still underrated. Therefore, this study aims at elucidating why now hijab receives greater support from the government under Joko Widodo’s administration that illuminates massive production and consumption on hijab domestically. The analyst came to argue that hijab consumption and production has become Indonesia’s national interest along with the mushrooming liberalization in its economy. Employing the qualitative research method to explain the source of power that makes hijab marketable in global and national market, the analyst also found that this trend is widely undermined by the implementation of neo-liberal economic policy that stresses the power of economic liberation of every individual while maintaining the state as the ultimate power of directing economic trajectory. Thus, the government of Indonesia seems to reconcile with the increasing domestic and global market demand on hijab. It is due to the state’s interest in establishing Indonesia as a global hijab centre by 2020.

Abstract

Abstract Indonesia has long been known as a producer of various and high-quality spices. Although the export of spices in the form of raw materials has increased, the growth rate of export of Indonesian spice products is still lower than the volume of imports from 2013 to 2017. The percentage of Indonesian spice imports even reached 30% per year while export growth was only in the range of 8% per year. However, this is inversely proportional to the benefits that is still not maximized. Spice commodities and strengthening export growth must receive systematic and comprehensive support. Increasing public awareness about the importance of the national economy needs to be done through a cross-sectoral approach, especially the empowerment of the spice economy. This study aims to find out how the contribution to strengthening the economic potential of spices can be gained by socializing knowledge about the spice economy aimed at the community, especially the millennial generation and generation Z, which was carried out through social media campaign and online seminar.
