Abstract

The main purpose is to analyze the role of Indonesian female police deployed as Individual Police Officers in the United Nations peacekeeping operation in Darfur from 2016 to 2018. This research was designed as a qualitative case study that triangulated data from previously published researches, institutional documents, and semi-structured qualitative interviews. Previous scholarly publications were used to observe gender deficit – which is the lack of female personnel in UN peacekeeping missions. Institutional documents, particularly ex-Indonesian female police reports, were analyzed to contribute to data enrichment in this research. Lastly, the authors conducted semi-structured qualitative interviews with some ex-female police who have completed their deployment in UNAMID (2016-2018). Concerning the gender equality and counterinsurgency concepts, this research figured out that Indonesian female police could demonstrate their strategic role to provide skill-building activities, trust-building with refugees, and human rights advocacy. The numbers of Indonesian female police in this mission remained higher than other Southeast Asian contributing countries, but the Indonesian female police were also functional in line with the UN gendering peace and security agenda.

Abstract

In recent years, Indonesia has actively pursued economic diplomacy to enhance its international standing through trade, tourism, investment, and services (TTIS). This study focuses on analyzing Indonesia's economic diplomacy strategy in developing the Mandalika Special Economic Zone (SEZ) from 2017 to 2021. Employing a qualitative methodology involving data analysis and interviews, the research follows the four phases of economic diplomacy outlined by Kishan S. Rana, encompassing economic salesmanship, economic networking, image building, and regulatory management with resource mobilization. This aimed to unravel Indonesia's commitment to fostering tourism as a strategic sector, utilizing Mandalika SEZ to attract investments. Findings reveal that Indonesia has successfully navigated through the four phases, particularly emphasizing sports tourism in Mandalika and cultivating a conducive investment climate. The study underscores the academic importance by contributing insights into the intricacies of economic diplomacy, tourism development, and the role of non-state actors, exemplified by the ITDC serving as Mandalika's BUPP. This research bridges gaps in the literature, shedding light on the multifaceted nature of Indonesia's economic diplomacy and offering practical implications for policymakers and investors alike.

Abstract

This paper discusses the Australian government's public diplomacy effort through the MAMPU program phase II (2016 - 2020) which focuses on gender equality and women's empowerment issues in Indonesia. The author used the concept of public diplomacy in this paper to analyse what the Australian government has done to achieve its interest through the MAMPU program. The paper uses a qualitative method with a descriptive approach, by using secondary and primary data which are program MAMPU's social media, website, various documents, entries from the internet, and an interview with MAMPU Program Manager from BaKTI Foundation. This paper finds that efforts conducted by the Australian government in the MAMPU program are compatible with four of the five relational initiatives characteristics in public diplomacy. Furthermore, because of its public diplomacy through the MAMPU program, the Australian government gained positive images as a country that supports the women empowerment issue in Indonesia. In addition, the Australian government could also strengthen its relationship with the Indonesian government.
