Abstract

Waste management, especially plastic waste, poses a significant challenge in addressing the climate crisis in coastal areas. This study aims to apply a participatory approach that integrates the principles of social communication and the community-based behavior change theory (Community-Based Social Marketing, CBSM) in the sedekah sampah (waste charity) campaign in Sekotong Barat Village, specifically in Dusun Medang and the Cemara Beach area. The method used is social communication to raise community awareness about the importance of waste management, followed by an invitation for active participation in the sedekah sampah movement, which involves valuable waste. The campaign is driven by the CBSM model, which has proven effective in changing community behavior toward environmental issues. This model engages the community directly in planning and implementing waste reduction programs. The results of this community service indicate an increase in participation, and plastic waste, which was previously considered trash, is now viewed as a valuable resource for social purposes. This approach also successfully transformed community behavior in waste management in the coastal area, creating awareness and tangible actions in reducing plastic waste.

Abstract

Mining activities are often the leading cause of declining environmental quality and public health status. This is inseparable from the impact of toxic and hazardous waste materials (B3), one of which is mercury. Mercury is the primary weapon of gold miners in the processing process. The community of Kedaro Village, Sekotong District, has an average community activity as an unlicensed gold miner and, as a whole, uses mercury. Education on the dangers of mercury aims to provide insight to the public about the dangers of mercury to health and the environment so that they have preventive measures to protect their health and the environment. This service is carried out using the method of education/counselling and health problems for the mining community without a permit. This counselling activity is carried out by presenting material, providing education on how to wash hands properly and adequately, and health checks. The results of the physical examination conditions on miners' skin show changes in the colour and shape of the skin. Of the 21 counselling participants, on average, they did not understand the dangers of mercury and the occurrence of a decrease in skin health. This activity was carried out well, but the number of participants could have been more optimal, which demanded the attention of all of us to provide continuous education.

Abstract

Psychological stress plays a crucial role in modulating the immune system through complex mechanisms involving interactions between the nervous, endocrine, and immune systems. This review evaluates the impact of acute and chronic stress on immune function and the molecular pathways involved. This study employed a narrative literature review approach to explore the relationship between psychological stress and the immune system from a psychoneuroimmunological perspective. The literature review found that chronic stress has been shown to induce immune system dysregulation through activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and the sympathetic nervous system, leading to increased levels of glucocorticoid and catecholamine hormones. These hormones influence immune cells, inhibiting the proinflammatory Th1 pathway, enhancing the Th2 response, and causing increased levels of inflammatory cytokines such as IL-6 and TNF-α. Consequently, stress contributes to an increased risk of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, depression, and diabetes. Meanwhile, short-term acute stress can have adaptive immunostimulatory effects, especially in healthy individuals. The stress response is highly individualized and influenced by a person's biological vulnerability and coping capacity. By understanding the relationship between stress and the immune system in the context of psychoneuroimmunology, preventive approaches and clinical interventions can be developed to minimize the adverse effects of stress on physical and mental health.

Abstract

Breast milk is the primary source of nutrition for newborns, providing not only essential nutrients but also rich bioactive components with immunological functions. It plays a critical role in the development and modulation of the infant’s immune system, through both innate immune components such as lactoferrin, lysozyme, and immune cells (macrophages, lymphocytes), and adaptive components like secretory immunoglobulin A (sIgA). Stunting in Indonesia is associated with a number of factors, including poverty, low levels of education, poor parenting techniques, and repeated infections that hinder the absorption of nutrients. This review aims to examine the role of breast milk in supporting the infant immune system, particularly in preventing infections, promoting the colonization of healthy gut microbiota, and stimulating mucosal immune development. The method used was a literature review of scientific articles published over the last 10 years (2015–2025) sourced from PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar. The findings reveal that exclusively breastfed infants have a lower risk of respiratory and gastrointestinal infections, as well as atopic dermatitis, and demonstrate a more mature immune response compared to non-breastfed infants. The conclusion of this study confirms that breastfeeding significantly contributes to strengthening the infant immune system through immunoprotective and immunomodulatory mechanisms.
