Abstract

Hygiene and health are important aspects in creating a healthy learning environment, especially in Early Childhood Education (PAUD). This study evaluated the effectiveness of a mentoring program at Permata Bunda PAUD aimed at improving handwashing habits and utilization of clean water sanitation among children. The program involved intensive training for educators on proper handwashing techniques, as well as improvements to sanitation facilities. Before the training, educators’ knowledge of proper handwashing was relatively low, with only 45% knowing the proper technique. After the training, knowledge increased significantly to 90%. The program continued with direct education for children through interactive methods, such as educational games and picture stories. Observation results showed positive changes in children’s handwashing habits, with the frequency increasing from 1-2 times per day before the program to 5-6 times per day after the program. Improvements to sanitation facilities, including the addition of sinks and provision of soap, also contributed to the increase in handwashing frequency. These findings suggest that an integrated approach involving education, training, and improvements to sanitation facilities is effective in improving handwashing habits and makes an important contribution to the prevention of infectious diseases. This program offers a model that can be applied in other educational institutions to improve children’s hygiene habits.

Abstract

Background: Free radicals trigger various degenerative diseases, making the exploration of natural antioxidants essential. Honey pineapple (Ananas comosus L.) peel, often considered agricultural waste, contains bioactive compounds such as phenolics and flavonoids with potential antioxidant activity. This study aims to quantify the antioxidant activity of honey pineapple peel ethanolic extract, expressed as the IC₅₀ value. Methods: Honey pineapple peel powder was macerated using 70% ethanol. The antioxidant activity was evaluated using the ABTS cation radical assay. Extract concentrations (10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 µg/mL) were mixed with ABTS solution, and absorbance was measured at 747 nm using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. Results: The IC₅₀ value for Vitamin C was 6.173 µg/mL, whereas the honey pineapple peel extract yielded an IC₅₀ of 61.476 µg/mL. This indicates that the antioxidant potency of the extract is 9.958 times lower than that of Vitamin C. Conclusion: The ethanolic extract of honey pineapple peel exhibits antioxidant activity with an IC₅₀ of 61.476 µg/mL. Since the inhibition percentages within the tested range did not reach 50%, this value was determined through linear regression extrapolation. Future studies should employ higher concentration ranges to confirm the inhibitory effectiveness.
