Abstract

Extensive Reading (ER) is a proven approach to enhancing students' reading fluency, comprehension, and motivation. However, many EFL learners struggle with low reading motivation and technology distraction. This study explores the implementation of the Choose-Read-Share (CRS) strategy and Reading Logs to promote extensive reading. Using a qualitative case study approach, data were collected through classroom observations, semi-structured interviews, and document analysis (reading logs). The participants were 17 first-year students of the English Language Education Study Program at Universitas Singaperbangsa Karawang. Thematic analysis was applied to examine their implementation, benefits, and challenges. Findings indicate that CRS and reading logs increased student autonomy and engagement but posed challenges in maintaining motivation and confidence during discussions. While students enjoyed selecting books, some struggled with choosing appropriate materials. The Share stage supported comprehension but caused anxiety for hesitant students. Reading logs were useful for tracking progress but were sometimes seen as burdensome, leading to incomplete entries. Frequent readers showed better comprehension and engagement, supporting Krashen’s Input Hypothesis and the Matthew Effect (Stanovich, 1986). The study concludes that CRS and reading logs are effective but require modifications. Structured peer discussions, flexible reading log formats, and guided book selection are recommended to improve engagement and reduce sharing anxiety.

Abstract

Penilaian pembelajaran merupakan aspek penting dalam menjamin kualitas proses dan hasil belajar siswa. Salah satu bentuk penilaian yang umum digunakan adalah tes tertulis dalam bentuk butir soal. Namun, banyak guru mengalami kesulitan dalam menulis soal yang sesuai dengan kaidah evaluasi. Seiring perkembangan teknologi, Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) hadir sebagai solusi inovatif dalam mendukung penulisan butir soal. Kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kompetensi guru Bahasa Inggris yang tergabung dalam MGMP Cipayung, Jakarta Timur, dalam menulis butir soal berdasarkan teori evaluasi dan pemanfaatan GenAI. Kegiatan dilakukan dalam tiga tahap: perencanaan, pelaksanaan pendampingan, dan evaluasi. Materi pelatihan mencakup teori penulisan soal serta praktik penggunaan ChatGPT dan DeepSeek. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan peningkatan pemahaman peserta terhadap konsep penulisan soal dan kemampuan mereka dalam menggunakan GenAI secara efektif. Kegiatan ini memberikan kontribusi nyata dalam mendukung transformasi digital pendidikan, khususnya dalam pengembangan asesmen yang autentik, adaptif, dan bermakna.

Abstract

This study investigates formative assessment techniques within the grade 2 English textbook “My Next Words”, focusing on their effectiveness in supporting young learners’ language development. Employing a descriptive evaluative methodology, this research analyzes three representative chapters from the textbook using a structured analytical framework influenced by foundational educational theories from Wortham (204), Boyd (2020), and Gullo (2004). The analysis is centered on several key aspects of formative assessment: task design and effectiveness, task duration and adaptability, task presentation and support, feedback and reinforcement, and repetition and practice. Data were collected through a detailed evaluation checklist applied to selected textbook chapters, with a binary rating system quantifying the presence of effective formative assessment strategies. The findings reveal that while the textbook effectively utilizes engaging and developmentally appropriate activities, there are notable gaps in providing structured progress markers, authentic language, personalized learning experiences, and varied feedback mechanisms. These gaps suggest opportunities for enhancing the textbook’s instructional design to better meet the developmental needs and learning styles of young learners. The implications of this study extend to curriculum developers and educational practitioners, emphasizing the need for textbooks that not only engage young learners but also systematically track and support their language learning progress.

Abstract

This study investigates the English language training requirements of civil servants at the Personnel and Human Resource Development Agency in an Indonesian industrial city. A systematic needs analysis approach used to examine current proficiency levels, identify specific skill gaps, and determine preferred learning methodologies among 50 government employees in an industrial area. The research used a mixed-methods design integrating demographic surveys, self-assessment questionnaires, and analysis of workplace context. The study results revealed significant proficiency gaps, especially in oral communication skills, with 78% of participants rating their speaking abilities as poor or moderate. The priority training areas included technical terminology in public administration, professional communication, and service for international visitors especially from industry. The results show that instead of general English instruction, civil servants need specialized English for Specific Purposes (ESP) training. In order to improve institutional capacity for international engagement, the study offers evidence-based recommendations for curriculum design, scheduling preferences, and assessment frameworks.

Abstract

Kegiatan pengabdian ini bertujuan untuk mengabdikan ilmu pengajaran bahasa Inggris sebagai juri dalam lomba bahasa Inggris tingkat kota. Hasil akhir dari kegiatan pengabdian masyarakat ini adalah suatu keputusan dari tim dewan juri atas proses penilaian lomba storytelling tingkat kota di Purwakarta, Karawang dan Bekasi. Lomba ini adalah bagian dari program SPECTASEED 2024 yang diselenggarakan oleh Association of Students of English Education Department, Universitas Singaperbangsa Karawang. Acara ini berlangsung dari 16 Oktober hingga 17 November 2024, terdiri dari tahap persiapan, pelaksanaan, dan penghargaan. Penilaian didasarkan pada rubrik objektif yang menilai isi cerita, kualitas naskah, performa, kelancaran, dan penggunaan properti. Partisipasi dalam mendongeng meningkatkan keterlibatan, keterampilan komunikasi, dan penguasaan bahasa peserta. Kompetisi ini tidak hanya meningkatkan keterampilan bahasa Inggris meliputi kosakata dan struktur gramatikal tetapi juga meningkatkan kepercayaan diri dan ekspresi kreatif. Ini menciptakan lingkungan inspiratif bagi siswa untuk menunjukkan bakat mereka, mendorong semangat komunitas dan kolaborasi. Inisiatif ini menyoroti pentingnya soft skill dalam pendidikan modern.

Abstract

Transformasi digital pendidikan menjadi kebutuhan mendesak agar sekolah mampu menyediakan layanan yang efisien, transparan, dan adaptif terhadap perkembangan teknologi. Namun, di MTs Al-Falah Kotabaru Karawang, sebagian besar layanan administrasi dan perpustakaan masih berjalan manual meskipun infrastruktur dasar seperti internet dan komputer sudah tersedia. Kondisi ini menyebabkan rendahnya efisiensi kerja dan terbatasnya akses siswa terhadap bahan bacaan digital. Program pengabdian ini bertujuan mengembangkan website sekolah dan e-library sebagai sarana digitalisasi administrasi sekaligus peningkatan literasi digital warga sekolah. Metode pelaksanaan menggunakan pendekatan partisipatif melalui lima tahapan: perencanaan, pengembangan, implementasi, evaluasi, dan keberlanjutan. Evaluasi dilakukan dengan observasi, kuesioner, dan refleksi partisipatif untuk mengukur efektivitas program. Hasil kegiatan menunjukkan terbentuknya website sekolah yang responsif, sistem e-library dengan 150 koleksi digital, serta peningkatan keterampilan digital 21 tenaga pendidik dan kependidikan. Efisiensi administrasi meningkat hingga 50% berdasarkan laporan staf tata usaha, sedangkan tingkat kepuasan pengguna terhadap sistem mencapai 100% dari target 85%. Selain itu, terbentuk tim pengelola internal yang mampu menjaga keberlanjutan program. Kegiatan ini berkontribusi nyata pada pencapaian Asta Cita pemerintah Indonesia dan SDG 4 tentang Pendidikan Berkualitas, khususnya melalui penguatan kapasitas literasi digital dan modernisasi layanan pendidikan di sekolah mitra.
