Abstract

Malnutrition in children under 5 years of age is still one of the leading health problems in Indonesia. Early detection of malnutrition in children is vital to allow early intervention. Unfortunately, parents' awareness of the importance of routine nutritional status assessments of their children is still low. Thus, malnutrition in children tends to be recognized late and leads to stunting. The Community Service Team from the Faculty of Medicine, Mahasaraswati University, Denpasar, conducted a nutritional status assessment for children in Banjar Jagatamu aiming at detecting malnutrition in children as well as increasing parental awareness of the importance of routine nutritional status assessment for their children. In total, 27 children aged 0-5 years underwent height, weight, and head circumference assessment to determine their nutritional status. Then, parents received personal counseling with a pediatrician to answer their questions and increase parental knowledge regarding the problem of malnutrition in children. In this social service, there were 10 children (37.0%) with undernutrition and three children (11.11%) with stunting. This social service received a positive response from the community and proved that education and sustainable child health services are still very much needed in Banjar Jagatamu, Meliling Village, Tabanan

Abstract

Stunting is still one of the unresolved child health problems in Indonesia. Education related to providing balanced nutrition is one of the critical keys to preventing stunting in children. We conducted a pediatric health education program regarding "Balanced Nutrition to Reduce Stunting" in Banjar Jagatamu, Meliling Village, Kerambitan, Tabanan on November 17, 2024. This education involved residents of Banjar Jagatamu. We used an educational approach and involved various interactive activities during counseling. During counseling, we provided education regarding nutritional needs according to the child's age, the importance of a high-protein diet for children aged 6 to 24 months, and the importance of routine monitoring of child growth and development at primary health care for early detection of stunting. During the counseling, participants listen enthusiastically and actively ask questions during the discussion session. In addition to increasing participants' insight, this education regarding a balanced diet for children could be a sustainable stunting prevention strategy so that the community and health workers can work together to accelerate reducing stunting in Indonesia

Abstract

Ear and hearing health is an important thing that needs special attention. Disorders of the ear and hearing can cause several disorders, such as ear infections, balance problems, and even permanent hearing loss. Good ear and hearing health can be achieved by adopting healthy habits and attitudes based on good knowledge in ear and hearing health. One of the causes of hearing loss that often occurs is cerumen block/cerumen obsturans/cerumen impaction. As a form of community service and realizing the main goal of the WHO Sound Hearing 2030 program, lecturers from the Faculty of Medicine, Mahasaraswati University, Denpasar, held a health service in Banjar Jagatamu, Meliling Village, Kerambitan - Tabanan, namely Bersih-Bersih Telinga (BBT) to reduce the incidence of deafness due to cerumen. In addition to cleaning the ears, the health service activities were also filled with consultations regarding community complaints in the field of ears, nose, and throat

Abstract

The ear is one of the five main senses in the human body. The ear has a primary function as a sense of hearing which is very necessary in facilitating communication between humans. Ear and hearing diseases are very often missed and overlooked. Patients rarely go for treatment because they consider it trivial or are even unaware of the disease in their ears or hearing, unless their daily activities are disrupted or they experience communication disorders. The Indonesian government through the National Strategic Plan (RENSTRANAS) recorded that the most common cause of morbidity in outer ear disease is cerumen block/cerumen obsturans at 4.6%, and middle ear disease is Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media (CSOM) of the benign type at 3% (Ministry of Health of the Republic of Indonesia, 2019). The World Health Organization (WHO) states that more than 5% of the world's population has hearing loss (432 million adults and 34 million children) (WHO, 2021). This outreach event is focused on supporting the Sound Hearing 2030 program, where one of the main focuses is to eradicate hearing loss due to cerumen block/cerumen obsturans. The counseling was held in Banjar Jagatamu, Meliling Village, Kerambitan - Tabanan, by lecturers from the Faculty of Medicine, Mahasaraswati University, Denpasar, involving local residents

Abstract

With the increasing use of personal listening devices (PLDs) such as headsets and true wireless stereo (TWS) for digital music devices, constant exposure to loud noise has become a serious threat to the hearing health of the younger generation. While the use of headsets or TWS has become an integral part of teenagers' daily lives, it turns out to pose serious risks to hearing health. The material presented covered important topics, including: safe volume limits (not more than 85 dB), recommended listening duration (the 60/60 rule—listen at no more than 60% volume for 60 minutes, then take a break), and the importance of using noise-canceling headsets or TWS to reduce the need to increase the volume. The education also emphasized that early symptoms such as tinnitus (ringing in the ears) should not be ignored, as they can be an early indication of permanent damage to the hair cells in the cochlea.

Abstract

Public health is increasingly becoming a major concern, especially in efforts to prevent disease through healthier and more natural consumption patterns. Herbal drinks have become one of the most widely developed alternatives because of their health benefits. Various medicinal plants have been traditionally used in folk medicine, including takokak leaves (Solanum torvum Swartz.), cinnamon (Cinnamomum spp.), and palm sugar (Arenga pinnata). Takokak leaves are known to contain bioactive compounds with potential antioxidant properties, while cinnamon and palm sugar contribute to enhancing palatability while enriching bioactive compounds. This study aims to formulate takokak leaf powder (Solanum torvum Swartz.) with cinnamon and palm sugar as a herbal beverage and evaluate its functional potential. This study is an experimental study with a completely randomized design (CRD) comprising six treatment combinations and one control. The results showed that the addition of cinnamon and palm sugar to the takokak leaf herbal beverage significantly affected the levels of flavonoids, phenols, tannins, and IC50. Flavonoid levels ranged from 6.38 to 9.71 mg/100g, phenolic content ranged from 4.67 to 6.49 mg/100g, tannin content ranged from 3.74 to 7.19 mg/100g, and IC50 values ranged from 19,293.34 to 42,290.50 ppm. The results also showed that all positive treatments contained alkaloid and saponin compounds. Based on the hedonic sensory test results, treatment P1 (2% cinnamon and 3% palm sugar) received the highest preference score compared to other treatments based on the parameters of color, aroma, taste, viscosity, and overall acceptance. These findings indicate the potential of takokak herbal beverage formulations as a source of natural antioxidants that are sensorially acceptable. Further research is recommended to evaluate takokak leaf herbal beverages with the addition of cinnamon and palm sugar in vitro and in vivo.

Abstract

Vitamin D deficiency remains a global health concern, including in tropical countries such as Indonesia, where many children still experience inadequate levels. Beyond its role in bone health, vitamin D is essential in immune regulation. Allergic rhinitis, a common condition in children, involves inflammation of the nasal mucosa and can negatively impact quality of life, learning, and daily activities. This study aims to review current evidence on the relationship between vitamin D deficiency and the incidence and severity of allergic rhinitis in children. This research used a narrative review approach by systematically searching PubMed and Google Scholar for relevant articles published between 2014 and 2024. The inclusion criteria focused on original studies involving children under 18 years that examined vitamin D levels or supplementation in relation to allergic rhinitis.Findings indicate that vitamin D plays an immunomodulatory role by reducing IgE levels, regulating cytokines, and enhancing T-regulatory cells. Several studies show that low vitamin D levels are associated with increased risk, severity, and poorer treatment outcomes of allergic rhinitis. However, some studies report inconsistent results. In conclusion, vitamin D deficiency may contribute to allergic rhinitis in children, although further research is needed to confirm this relationship.

Abstract

Tonsillitis is a common Ear, Nose, Throat, Head and Neck Surgery (ENT-BKL) disease that can develop into chronic tonsillitis, requiring operative measures such as tonsillectomy or adenotonsillectomy. The characteristics of patients undergoing surgical procedures need to be known as a basis for evaluating clinical services and management. This study describes the characteristics of tonsillitis patients undergoing surgical procedures at Bhayangkara Hospital, Denpasar, from January to June 2026. The study used a retrospective descriptive design utilizing secondary data from patient medical records. The sample was determined using consecutive sampling techniques according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. Analysis was conducted descriptively using frequency distribution and percentages. A total of 25 patients met the study criteria. Patients were predominantly male (56%), while women were 44%. The 3–20 year age group was the largest group diagnosed with chronic adenotonsillitis (36%) and chronic tonsillitis (36%). The 21–60 year age group was entirely diagnosed with chronic tonsillitis (28%). Tonsillectomy was performed in 64% of patients, while adenotonsillectomy was performed in 36% of patients based on clinical diagnosis. Patients were predominantly young, with a relatively balanced gender distribution. The choice of surgical procedure was based on the clinical diagnosis and age-specific tonsil and adenoid development.

Abstract

Skin hyperpigmentation is a common condition caused by increased melanin production or distribution and can be triggered by ultraviolet light exposure, inflammation, or hormonal changes. Kojic acid is a natural compound widely used in dermatology due to its ability to inhibit tyrosinase, a key enzyme in melanin biosynthesis. This systematic literature review aims to synthesize scientific evidence regarding the effectiveness of kojic acid in reducing skin hyperpigmentation. The review was compiled following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines and searched the databases PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. Included studies included clinical, experimental, and preclinical studies evaluating the use of kojic acid alone or in combination with other hyperpigmentation conditions for melasma, lentigo, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, or other hyperpigmentation conditions. Key variables extracted included study design, sample type, kojic acid concentration, duration of use, pigmentation outcomes, and side effects. In general, most studies demonstrated that kojic acid is effective in reducing hyperpigmentation intensity through tyrosinase inhibition and reduced melanin formation. This effect appears to be more consistent when used in combination with other lightening agents such as glycolic acid, hydroquinone, or niacinamide. However, skin irritation, contact dermatitis, and sensitivity may increase in some users, especially with high concentrations or prolonged use. Kojic acid shows good potential as a topical depigmenting agent for skin hyperpigmentation, but its effectiveness must be balanced against the risk of irritation and limited formulation stability. Standardization of concentration, duration, and dosage form is needed to achieve more consistent clinical benefits.
