Abstract

The popularity of video games among language learners makes games a potential medium for learning languages. Previous research shows that playing video games, one of which is DOTA 2, can have a positive effect on students' vocabulary acquisition, but it still does not explain what specific vocabulary learning strategies are used. This study explores DOTA 2 players' experiences in acquiring new knowledge and identifies effective strategies for acquiring knowledge in the context of the game. The research method used is a case study research design, as well as semi-structured interviews and observation. The results showed that DOTA 2 players learned new vocabulary through exposure while playing the game, and social interaction was the most emphasized comprehension learning strategy used by the participants. This study provides insight into the effectiveness of DOTA 2 as a language learning tool, especially regarding knowledge acquisition.

Abstract

Understanding the implementation of Differentiated Instruction is crucial, especially where Islamic high schools adopt a distinct educational approach in implementing the Emancipated Curriculum, making it essential to understand the nuances of this approach to enhance student learning outcomes effectively. This study investigates the aspects and strategies applied as well as the problems faced by English Teachers of Islamic Senior High Schools in implementing differentiated instruction. A descriptive qualitative study was utilized through semi-structured interviews with five English teachers from different schools and document analysis of the teachers’ lesson plans. The process of thematic analysis involved coding and categorizing the answers from the participants into themes, which were then compared with the document analysis and interpreted. The findings indicated that all aspects have been applied in the implementation of differentiated instruction including content, process, product, and learning environment. Diverse strategies were applied, such as presenting materials in different forms, implementing collaborative projects, peer tutoring, adapting Islamic stories and histories, etc. However, the teachers faced problems in managing time, selecting relevant materials, developing distinct assessment rubrics, etc. This study contributes to the understanding of the implementation of differentiated instruction in English language learning, in the context of Islamic secondary schools by providing practical strategies and adding insight into existing literature. The study suggests that implementing differentiated instruction with all its aspects and teachers can adapt various strategies to cater to diverse student needs.

The objective of this study is to reveal how the implementation of TikTok as a learning medium, the benefits and obstacles experienced by students. A qualitative research design was used in this study. The instruments are interviews, observations, and open questionnaires to obtain more in-depth and objective data triangulation. The observation data were analyzed to answer questions regarding the TikTok implementation. The questionnaires and the interview data was then classified, coded, and analyzed. Both were then compared and interpreted to reveal the benefits and obstacles experienced by students. Thus, TikTok was found to be implemented in synchronous and asynchronous class. Students responses to the benefits related to the speaking aspect were also revealed. However, students were experienced obstacles, both technological and non-technical. This study is necessary to gain teacher insight about the TELL, especially the implementation of the TikTok app in secondary school speaking classes, so they can use it properly.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the perceived usefulness and ease of use of ChatGPT among English majors. The study used a qualitative case study research design to gain an idea of the experiences and perceptions of major English students at a university in East Java, Indonesia. Participants in this study are six undergraduates from the major in English at an Indonesian university. Data collection is conducted using open-ended questionnaires and interviews with selected undergraduates. The Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) framework is used as an analysis lens to identify trends and interpretations of students' attitudes of ChatGPT for academic writing. The results of this study indicate that students majoring in English have mixed attitudes to ChatGPT, some students find it useful and others prefer alternative tools for their academic writing assignments.
