Abstract

ABSTRAKDalam artikel ini, penulis membahas kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat (PKM) yang bertujuan memberikan pelatihan kepada masyarakat di Kampung Wisata Bahari Tambak Lorok, Semarang Utara, untuk menerjemahkan teks poster dari bahasa Indonesia ke bahasa Inggris. Kegiatan pengabdian dilaksanakan pada bulan Mei 2019 dan difokuskan pada penerjemahan poster promosi pariwisata. Penerjemahan dilakukan dengan menggunakan model penerjemahan interlingual (interlingual translation) atau translation proper dari Eugene Nida. Hasilnya, peserta pelatihan dapat menerjemahkan poster-poster pariwisata sederhana dari bahasa Indonesia ke dalam bahasa Inggris.  Kata kunci:  Tambak Lorok; penerjemahan; poster; kampung wisata bahari.  ABSTRACT This article centers upon the acts of community service that we conducted in Tambak Lorok, Semarang, in May 2019; the community service was aimed at teaching the people of Tambak Lorok Semarang to translate Indonesian posters into English. Tambak Lorok has since 2016 been projected into a maritime tourist destination by the government of Indonesia, and this is the reason the people of Tambak Lorok find it necessary to learn simple English. Learning English can done through various ways, one of which is through poster translation. The translation method used during the community service was interlingual translation or translation proper, as is proposed by Eugene Nida. The translation process includes three stages, namely analysis, transfer, and restructuring. The result of the community service is that the people of Tambak Loro who participated in the community service were able to translate simple tourism posters from Indonesian into English. Abstract

ABSTRAKArtikel ini merupakan paparan kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat (PKM) yang dilakukan penulis bersama tim di Sekolah Muda Mandiri (SMM) Ar-Ridho, Tembalang, Semarang. Dalam kegiatan PKM, penulis mengadakan pendampingan penulisan persuasif dengan tujuan akhir siswa dapat membuat poster untuk menawarkan produk atau memberikan informasi kegiatan/ acara yang akan diselenggarakan. Kegiatan penulisan persuasif dan pembuatan poster ini sejalan dengan nilai wirausaha mandiri yang dianut oleh Sekolah Alam Ar-Ridho itu sendiri. Kegiatan membuat poster kemudian dilombakan agar lebih menarik minat siswa menciptakan poster-poster yang kreatif. Data diperoleh melalui observasi partisipatif dan analisis dokumen. Hasilnya, siswa-siswi SMM Ar-Ridho Semarang telah menggunakan bahasa yang persuasif dalam poster buatannya, dan mereka juga telah memanfaatkan gambar, warna, serta tata letak yang sesuai.Kata kunci :  penulisan persuasif, poster, SMM Ar-Ridho, Semarang. ABSTRACTThis article is a descriptive presentation of a community service activity that my team and I conducted at Sekolah Muda Mandiri Ar-Ridho, Tembalang, Semarang, Indonesia. During the community service, we trained the students, who are of senior high school level, how to write persuasively in English so that they could create persuasive posters. The data were therefore collected using participant observation method and document analysis. The data were analysed based on whether or not they had been written in persuasive ways and whether or not they had used proper designs and compositions in terms of pictures, colors, and layouts. The results show that, despite some shortcomings, the posters created by students of SMM Ar-Ridho Semarang have been written persuasively. Moreover, in relation to pictures, colors, and layouts, the posters have been designed properly and creatively.      Keywords : persuasive writing, poster, SMM Ar-Ridho, Semarang.

Abstract

This article concerns point of view and the ideology of feminism in Ratih Kumala’s novel Tabula Rasa. Point of view is defined with reference to the angle of telling a narrative, whereas feminism is the belief that women and other minority groups suffer from violence, repression, and discrimination. Here, point of view is analyzed based on three different classifications, i.e. Fowler-Uspensky model, Simpson’s mode of narration or Al-Alami’s types of narrators, and Uspensky’s types of narration. The result suggests that Ratih Kumala uses first and third person points of view and internal type of narration to communicate her support for feminism.

Abstract

This article presents a feminist stylistic analysis of religion in Nh. Dini’s novel La Barka. Proposed by Sara Mills in 1995, feminist stylistics aims to uncover gender bias in both written and spoken (literary) texts; feminist stylistics differs from other stylistic analyses in that it studies the context of text production and the context of text reception so as to reveal hidden sexist ideologies. (Literary) text production includes seven (7) factors, i.e. general language/ discourse constraints, textual antecedents, literary conventions, current literary trends, affiliations, publishing practices and sociohistorical factors. (Literary) text reception covers five (5) factors, which are intended audience, actual audience, implied reader, sociohistorical factors, and actual reader/s. Feminist stylistic reading of La Barka suggests that stereotypes of good women, as were prescribed by Indonesian New Order ideology and patriarchal Javanese traditions, do exist in the novel. Yet, there are also stereotypes of a good man; gentle, honest, assertive, independent, persistent, and tough are characters of good men, husbands, and fathers. Dini, however, does not just echo commonly accepted prescriptions of good women and men. She questions patriarchy, and religion is one social structure that she questions. Religion is sexist in that it does not properly educate women; it educates women in those skills necessary for housekeeping only. Also, religion does not accommodate women’s voices and needs, for all religious leaders are men, who are unwilling to seriously address women’s needs. Then Dini questions the hypocritical and uncritical attitudes of many religious believers; they observe religious rituals willingly and regularly but do not actualize the values in life.

Abstract

A linguistic analysis of literature has caused debates among linguists and between linguists and literary critics. The debate among linguists occurs because they have different opinions regarding the nature of literary language, while the debate between linguists and literary scholars arises as literary scholars question the authority of linguistics to study literary writings. Therefore, in this paper I argue that the language of literature is similar to that of non-literary texts, and I also believe that because the centrality of language in literary writings, linguistics, as the study of language, has the authority to study literature. One linguistic approach to literature is stylistics, which studies the forms, functions, and meanings of literary language in a detailed and systematic way.  Keywords: linguistics; literature; literary language; stylistics;

Abstract

In this article, I present a semiotic study of Dee’s novel Supernova, but the analysis is focused on the female character Diva or Supernova, which plays as the symbol of Dee’s struggle for gender equality. Following Chandler (2007), I made use of the Saussurean and Peircean semiotics, in which signs consist of inseparable signifiers and signifieds, and the modes of their relationships are icon, index, and symbol. In the succeeding discussion, I argue that the title of the novel functions as an index that directs the readers’ attention to the character Diva (Supernova). Supernova is a metaphor (iconic and symbolic) of an individual who is able to enlighten the life of others with wisdom. She also functions as a symbol of strong oppositions to patriarchy, in which good women are simplistically defined with reference to their marriage and family life. There are hundreds of reasons defining a good woman, including maturity, self-awareness, knowledge and compassion. Another metaphorical use of Supernova relates to the fact that she, because of all her qualities, serves as an Avatar, something uncommon in Indonesian context. Appointing a woman and a prostitute as an Avatar means a challenge to Indonesia’s religious patriarchy.Keywords: Supernova; semiotics; icon, index, symbol; gender equality

Abstract

Beauty v-log is one of popular v-logs on YouTube. It also provides many registers but none of the other researchers conduct research on beauty v-logs registers. Thus, I attempt to discover and to explain the registers in beauty v-logs and the semantic change of registers in the beauty v-logs. There are three beauty v-loggers who were analyzed, namely Wayne Goss, Tati, and Angie HotandFlashy. They are native speaker of English. The beauty v-logs are audio-video formats which were uploaded in 2019. To collect the data, I used a non-participatory observation method and a note taking method. To analyze the data, I used a referential method. The result shows that there are fourteen registers have undergone semantic change which can be classified into three namely, metaphor, specialization, and generalization. Semantic change which mostly occurs metaphor because the meanings of the beauty v-logs registers transfer from different domains onto beauty domain.Keywords: registers; beauty v-log; beauty vlogger; semantic change

Abstract

Artikel pengabdian masyarakat ini berisi paparan kegiatan pengabdian kepada masyarakat (PKM) yang penulis lakukan bersama dengan tim pengabdian masyarakat dari Program Studi S1 Sastra Inggris, FIB, Undip berupa pelatihan TOEFL bagi mahasiswa semester empat Fakultas Syariah dan Hukum, Universitas Islam Negeri (UIN) Walisongo, Semarang. Penulis dan tim memfokuskan pelatihan pada tes sesi kedua, sesi Structure and Written Expressions, dengan pertimbangan tes Structure ini memiliki nilai konversi terbesar dibandingkan dengan nilai konversi sesi pertama (Listening) dan ketiga (Reading). Pelatihan dilakukan dalam tiga sesi. Sesi pertama, penulis memberikan penjelasan singkat mengenai TOEFL dan konsep dasar struktur kalimat dalam bahasa Inggris. Kedua, penulis memberikan latihan soal-soal paper-based TOEFL. Yang terakhir, penulis bersama mahasiswa peserta pelatihan mendiskusikan soal yang telah mereka kerjakan. Hasil pelatihan memperlihatkan bahwa persamaan konsep dasar struktur kalimat bahasa Inggris dan Arab memudahkan mahasiswa subjek dan verba dalam bahasa Inggris, namun mereka masih mengalami kesulitan mengerjakan pertanyaan soal yang berhubungan dengan verba bentuk simple past dan past participles, kalimat pasif, serta frase preposisi.Kata kunci :  TOEFL, paper-based, Structure and Written expressions, UIN Walisongo This article concerns the acts of teaching and learning that my team and I organized during our community service program. The aim of the program was to give the fourth-semester students of the Faculty of Shari’a and Law of the State Islamic University (Universitas Islam Negeri or UIN) Walisongo, Semarang a short training on Structure and Written Expression tests of the paper-based TOEFL. The training program consisted of three sessions. First, we introduced students to some basic concepts of structure or grammar in English. In this session, we learnt that similarities between English and Arabic grammars in terms of sentence structures eased the students to understand the grammatical patterns of English sentences. Yet, they experienced difficulties when they were to handle questions related to simple past, past participle, passive voice, and prepositional phrases. The second session was the time when the participants of the community service program independently worked on questions taken from the TOEFL Structure and Written Expression session. The final session was when all individuals participating in the community service program discussed together the answers to the TOEFL test. Abstract

People use different utterances by considering the social context in which communication  takes place. An utterance may have more than one meaning and function depending on social  context and other factors. This study aims to describe the spoken language functions of the main  characters, Charlie and Nicole, in the Marriage Story movie. This descriptive qualitative research  used Roman Jacobson’s language function classification to categorize the selected utterances  found in Marriage Story movie into one of the six functions (emotive, conative, referential,  metalingual, phatic, and poetic). To interpret the classified data and the contexts or situations, I  relate the language functions to social factors and social dimensions based on Holmes’  categorization. The results show that all six language functions appeared in Nicole and Charlie’s  utterances. The data analysis depicts that emotive function is predominantly used by the main  characters throughout the whole movie. Moreover, those language functions are influenced by  social factors and social dimensions.Keywords: language function; social factor; social dimension; Marriage Story.

Abstract

This study concerns the classification of the taboo words uttered by the main characters of The Brothers Grimsby movie, Nobby Butcher and Sebastian Graves. Nobby is a poor man who grows in a poor city, while Sebastian grows in a rich and decent family. The taboo words are classified in accordance with Battistella’s groupings of taboo words. Non-participant observation method and note-taking technique were applied to collect the data. The result shows that there are a total of 36 taboo words spoken by Nobby and Sebastian, which consist of 13 vulgarity (36,1%), 11 obscenity (30,5%), 9 profanity (25%), and 3 epithet (8,3%). From the 36 taboo words discovered, 26 are uttered by Nobby, while the rest of which are said by Sebastian. The finding implies that an individual with less education and from a lower-class society tends to speak taboo words more frequently than that growing up with education within an upper-class circle.
